I saw the movie with a friend and thought it was ok, the jumpcuts between humans and kaijus during the fights were jarring and headache inducing. The snowfight would've been so much cooler if we got to see most of the action.

The idea is stupid but the execution is done well. They manage to freeze Godzilla to defeat him, and just as the movie conclude there is a zoom on the tail that reveals they defeated Godzilla at the last minute, just before he reached critical mass and started spawning hellish monstrosities.

It's been over 20 years, user. Most of us are over Emmerich's bullshit by now and can just appreciate Zilla's design as a stand alone monster even if they tried to pull the wool over people's eyes back then. Getting a great cartoon and slowly being put into more Godzilla side content like comics and games has helped a lot. Ironically, most people who hate him nowadays are probably casuals who don't know much about Godzilla in the first place.

The cross isn't completely random. A lot of people have pointed out in the past that Ghidorah's design seems to be based on a famous depiction of Satan, the Great Red Dragon Paintings. It's a painting based on the book of Relevation where the devil has 7 heads, which is a bit too much, but in Dante's Inferno the devil is described with three heads, so Ghidorah could be partially based on that painting and the Dante's Inferno description sprinkled with some kaiju on top. In the last Godzilla movie, when they talk about the monsters having inspired countless artists, they throw a bunch of reference on a table and the painting of Satan is on top, so they are definitely aware of the ghidorah/devil design theory which also explains the cross in that scene.
