Why were videogames so fucking good 20 years ago

Why were videogames so fucking good 20 years ago
Why are they so fucking bad today
Am I just out of touch?

Same reason Facebook went to shit. Normies and brainlets

You're a fucking out of touch old man. Games were nearly the same quality 20 years. The system you posted has about 15-25 really good games out of a library of awful garbage.

Same goes with PS2 and original Xbox. PS2 had more because it had THOUSANDS of games but Xbox and Gamecube had 10 or so really great gems in a sea of putrid filth.

We've had 20 years to find the good ones from the sixth gen

>Facebook went to shit
Was it ever good?

games shifted from being interactive and engaging to narrative-based cinematic experiences. one sells in the current market, the other doesn't
you can still find play-centric games that aren't disguised movies in the indie market, and nintendo published games focus more on gameplay than cinematic experiences too. of course i'm legally obligated to load this post up with 900 qualifiers saying that i don't actually like nintendo and that all game developers are equal as to not upset anyone, so other publishers do it as well, it's just more common for nintendo

You got old, gacha games came out and achievements and dlc became a thing.
Buy a pc, buy a console once you can pirate for it.
Stop playing cod and fortnite and rehashed Pokemon games

People are going to say the same shit 20 years from now. I swear, so many games that were considered shit 20 years ago are now held up as classics...

>The system you posted has about 15-25 really good games out of a library of awful garbage

Modern consoles are lucky if they even get 10 DECENT games before the next version is shitted out. 15-25 is fucking outstanding compared to today's standards.

old good

new bad

Call of duty has been on the same engine since 2006.
Most shooters have been on a copied version of other games using Unreal.
Nothing is innovative in current gaming.

Kids today don't know how good gaming was.

lol why did you choose the nintendo dreamcast as the console to illustrate this point

memes aside this is kinda true

we are closer to each other now but that means in every single way imaginable

I don't think you got the point of the pic. It's not a celebration of smartphones and social media "bringing us together", it's a satirical dystopic vision of the world we live in today. When iPhones were created in 2007, a butterfly effect started, and 2010 was a point of no return. We are now in Hell.

>tfw kids today will be looking back on the xbone and ps4 with nostalgia
Is it just a matter of perspective? There's good games out today but can you only get sentimentally attached to these things as a kid?

phones have really ruined the world

i'm a zoomer and i still look at the gamecube with nostalgia despite most of my gaming years being on the 360/PS3.

I was referring to both the good and the bad

All modern games are shit, but if you’ve only eaten shit for your whole life, you will never know that it is shit. Kids today have never played and will never play a good game, so they will keep on eating shit happily.

pails of water ruined the old world, user

6th gen sucked dick compared to the 3rd and 4th gens.

I had a gamecube too well into the first parts of the 7th gen but it's just strange to think kids will look back on fortnite fondly

Yup. 2007 was a turning point. 2008 and 2009 were still retro enough, and we had an opportunity to salvage the dying world, but we blew it, and the world completely died in 2010.
I like to think of it as like a cancer. 2007 was when the cancer started, and 2010 was when it metastasized. By 2012 we were already well into stage 4.

zoomer here, my fond memories were playing halo as a kid but it's hard to imagine some 13 year old now having fond memories of a battle royale game

are you kidding? Kids will fondly remember anything they had fun doing. Of course they will fondly look back on battle royales. Talk about being out of touch.

>metastasized
Is that urinatingtree?

why? we had a campaign mode made by nerds who loved their franchise. we had god tier ost. we had custom games, and multiplayer. they just play this game and then move onto the next trendy game.

even the shittiest gamecube games were a hundred times more inventive and enjoyable than gaems now, like says the cinematic meme has destroyed and homogenised all games into map marker photorealistic unoptimised shit

YOU JUST GOT OLDER, ALL THE THINGS YOU USED TO ENJOY SUCK NOW FUCKING WE SHOULD ALL KILL OURSELVES PLEASE WE ALL NEED TO LEAVE THIS AWFUL PLACE

Online happened.

WHO IS GOING TO LOOK BACK FONDLY ON GAMES THAT ARE REPLACED EVERY 2 MONTHS YOU RETARD THIS WORLD IS TURNING TO SHIT

There's still good games out there, but the overhyped AAA live services are hogging all the spotlight

This
>AAA live service is announced
>game journos and normies hype it up
>game comes out
>it's shit
>game journos and normies split off to attack/defend the game
Even when theyre dead and shit they steal the show

Because online services and multiplayer wasn't a thing yet. There also wasn't the idea of "Games As A Service" back then either. It was expected that once you beat a game, you move on to the next game. Now you can continuously play a game for thousands of hours, like Call of Duty and Madden.

Mostly, yeah.

Yeah, again, a delusional piece of shit. Modern consoles have 30, 40 or more good games.

>but theyre also on PC!!!

oh ok

probably because you listened to console wars teens and took them seriously. either that or youtube is melting your brain. anything remotely good sold in big numbers outside of the ps1 which drowned in so much shovelware.

exactly. zoom zooms will be lucky to remember their last meme as they die for israel. there's almost certainly more hidden gems nowadays since the hype is deafening. it's not like the 90's where you maybe saw 1 commercial and got one preview and an article at launch for top titles on the market. just the viral garbage alone is huge in the past decade. it's all about day one sales and the old days of borrowing games and n64 games selling heavily by that and word of mouth are long gone.

Yes you are out of touch.

You're out of touch. Games were shit 20 years ago.

30 years ago is where it's at.

Back in 2008 Yea Forums said the gamecube had a shit library with a few good games and I agree. You probably grew up with the gamecube and are under the control of the nolstalgia factor. I give the GC a meh/10.

YOU GREW UP STOP WHINING YOU SOUL VS SOULLESS FAGGOTS. You guys are quick to forget that Gen Xers who grew up on Atari hated YOUR precious 5th-6th gen and anything that had pixels for being "soulless", since it wasn't their childhood.

Now you do the exact same with hating the Zoomer era of 7th-8th gen or anything that's HD for being soulless.

No one hated gen 3 other than some nationalistic idiots saying japan sucks
All the atarifarts dropped that shit like a brick in an instant

Where did I say people hated gen 3? I never mentioned gen 3 once.

Why would someone that grew up with atari which is gen 2 jump to gen 5 and skip 3 and 4, that never happened.
