Why were videogames so fucking good 20 years ago

Call of duty has been on the same engine since 2006.
Most shooters have been on a copied version of other games using Unreal.
Nothing is innovative in current gaming.

Kids today don't know how good gaming was.

Yup. 2007 was a turning point. 2008 and 2009 were still retro enough, and we had an opportunity to salvage the dying world, but we blew it, and the world completely died in 2010.
I like to think of it as like a cancer. 2007 was when the cancer started, and 2010 was when it metastasized. By 2012 we were already well into stage 4.
