Unofficial patch is good. Basic version for the core experience fixed, Plus version for some extra cut content that the modder tried to reimplement and play around with. Not inherently bad, but I think the Basic version is better for a first playthrough.

For a first run clan I'd either recommend Toreador or Tremere.

Toreador for the extra emphasis on dialogue and social abilities that you get from the get-go, Tremere for a few fun wacky magic powers and the ability to unlock a cool haven if you play your cards right.

I'd save Malkavian and Nosferatu for later.
