user, AoE Tournament Streams draws a lot of players, Online is well alive, and now you can mod the shit out of it to make every Civ with their unique look with IA mod.
MS also Announced that 4 new Civilizations will be added to AoE2 Definitive edition, therefore a new campaign and MAYBE the full fledged remake of Forgotten Empires.
Carter Campbell
i just fucking hope they dont fuck up AOE 4 but they're going to somehow

So how are the Definitive Editions anyway? Good or Soulless?

>Definitive edition on steam What's the difference between that and the AoE2 HD collection already on there? Are they gonna make me buy the same game again?

It means it doesn't matter if you buy it on the windows store or Steam, you can play together.

Complete remake.
Logan Collins
Any news when they're hitting steam?
Am I too naive to expect a >"It's available... right now!" during their E3 keynote?
You can change graphics in between DE and Classic in AoE1HD on the go, also the gameplay is SOLID. youtube.com/watch?v=2_ubw8B_akY
Also AoE2DE will come with all Xpacs for Free along with the new civs included, which is probably a new campaign. The question is, who are the 4 new Civs? inb4 we get Hapsburgs
Joshua Fisher
Rumors say that MS is making by themselves this time after the Dawn of War 3 Fiasco, and new relic being Shady as fuck.

>tfw too stupid to play anything other than Goths because their game plan of boom to imperial age+ spam Huskarls with Halbs is so simple to understand and execute
Spirit of the Law is doing YT videos about AoE, franly all of them are technical enough, and MS is really hitting on the balance department, but it all depends of the Civ.
>Hapsburgs >Civ Bonus: Auto lose Regicide matches after 100 years because your king is too retarded to live >Female units can't attack your king because they're too repulsed by him
maybe they went back after realizing that relic is a relic
Ian Mitchell
any civ with a strong, but cheap unique unit falls into that category. low elo multiplayer is all about fast castling and battling it out with whatever your castle produces anyway. maybe paladins if you're feeling risky. produced out of two or less stables though, of course. if uu spam is your thing then maybe byzantines? cheap trash and a very unintuitive (for the opposing player) unique unit, the cataphract, which isn't countered by halbs as you might htink. if you're comfortable with goths then maybe branch out with some other inf civs? aztec, slavs, vikings are all very good.
Jose Martin
It's good if you can stomach the weird card system, campaign that's mostly about shitty OCs and some magic mechanics when it comes to non-european civs. It has some great mods though, like Wars of Liberty, pic related.
Wars of Liberty mod for AoE3 has Hapsburg Austria as a faction, their special ability is marrying to other european countries to gain their bonuses. Pic unrelated, that's just Romania, being batshit crazy.
It looks pretty good. Is it more resource intensive on your rig? I have a bit of a toaster which runs AoE2 HD just fine, but I worry about how it's going to deal with huge multiplayer battles with those upgraded graphics in DE.
Hunter Wood
I bet some faction is going to get blacked

So what's going to happen to the HD edtion that's already on Steam?
Jack Turner
As I said in another thread: AoE2 HD Edition have a more expansions that it were developed by another dev team, no the same as AoE 2 original. AoE 2 Remastered will not have The Rise of Rajas and African Kingdoms.
Having this in mind, AoE 2 HD > AoE 2 Remaster
Christian Bennett
Give me >Seljuks >Scythians >Poles >Balts

Nothing at worst. At best they'll do cross-play with DE so the playerbase isn't segmented.
Isaiah Moore
AoE2DE is made by the same people who made those new expansion, user.
Xavier Myers
probably being updated to DE since it uses MS and Steamworks
MS confirmed that it will be EVERYTHING from AoE2 + the expansions up to Rise of Rajaas
Carson Smith
I'll be honest with you and tell you that I'm still getting trashed by the AI, I don't think I'm ready to play actual people. Picking Goths is the only thing that gave me the ability to survive against the "Standard" AI, because I kept focusing on too many of the different available units for the other civs. I tried Byzantines but I got overwhelmed by all the different shit they could build. But for Goths I saw that most of what they have sucks, but they have a great UU to deal with anything ranged+fortifications and buildings, and pretty great Halbs to deal with mounted units that could kill them.
I'm thinking Aztecs because I'm already used to having a bulk of my army shrug off arrow fire, and their Eagles can be made pretty arrow proof, I think? I know one of the meso civs can.
Ayden Thomas
Nothing compares to the originals, that's why these are all just remasters.
James Moore
can't deny. age of empires and classic wow is whats getting me hyped these days.
I think 1812-1918 would be the best time frame. 5 distinct eras that still have a connected sense of progress. New unit types are able to be introduced at each age.
Austin Mitchell
if you already own it? nothing probably
but given the much lower popularity of 1 and 3, they'll most likely stop selling AOE2 separately and only sell the bundle for a higher price. just like you can't buy FFX without getting FFX-2 with it too

Dawn of War 3 was made by the SJW brainlets at the now dead Relic Montreal, they SHAT on the original DoW cast besides brian who voiced for being a nice guy, they pushed monetization shit, ignored games workshop requirements and Sega was pissed with the final product because it was supposed to be their 1st Dawn of War title with them.
Relic nowadays is being led by hipster canadian retards.

Yeah, aztecs have great eagles. You should give multiplayer a whirl, HD is fine. Don't bother with voobly yet. Just don't fall into the trap of playing x map, or x gamemode all the time. Such as CBA or only black forest/ oasis. Playing random land map with random civ 1v1/2v2s if you wanna play. Just get some hotkeys ready and launch right into it. It's very fun.
Wyatt Parker
They Are Billions lets you face the largest army, if that counts for anything
Matthew Bell
They also completely fucked up the balance of units, lore and even attack animations. Space Marines don't fucking do front flips jesus fucking christ.
Angel Hill
North America perhaps? Mississippians, Cahokia, Iroquois. I'd rather not see them since they were never really "empires" beyond city states, but I think it is most likely.
If they aren't bound by a common architecture, then I think something like Bantu, Swiss, and another group of Asian Indians.
Brandon Johnson
Have we done all the major Mesocivs yet? There were a shitton of different tribes doing shit down there for thousands of years. Also eagle warriors are great and I want more ways to use them.

I enjoyed how AoE3 did Infantry/Cavalry/Cannon

So AoE4's gonna be something like Infantry/Cavalry/Tank? Or would tanks be something you'd only get in the final age? Are trenches gonna replace walls?
if they picked up where they left off it's somewhere in the 19th century, isn't it? Tanks would be at least age 3 out of 4 in that case.
Jaxson Johnson
*gets pelted by cavalry archers*
Logan Butler
If they wanted to make a game that covers 1800 to WWII, what would the ages be? Also, didn’t that some old AoE concept pic have WWII-era soldiers for AoE IV’s concept?
I keep thinking how something like 1800’s to WWI to WWII would work, it would at least give some very distinct eras to advance through, but would it also be too hard to implement in a straight progression?
Dominic Butler
*the first sentence was meant to be 1800s to WWI, world war one. I’m not saying that there isn’t enough technological advance for one game there, but how would you thematically era it?
the "old AoE concept pic" was fan-made, not official.
William Lee
the problem is that AoE always started in a comfy backwater era >stone age >dark age >burger age while after the colonization era there were no such "reset" ages

Fuck AOE2 remastered. HD version is fine.
Jayden Rivera
Meant to post this image.
I guess you could start a random match with a TC and 2-3 houses? Like you're just a small village.
I'd rather stick to having the final age be WW1, where there were tanks but they were shitty. Otherwise late game would be dominated by WW2 era tanks which were still kind of shitty but could steamroll any kind of infantry/cavalry.
Late game tanks should function basically as nearly indestructible, very expensive rams. Very slow, purposely terrible pathfinding, but adept at breaking trench lines, fortifications, and buildings. They'd also have guns that shred infantry formations, but they'd ultimately be vulnerable to saboteurs (petards? villagers?) or explosive type units like grenadiers which I assume would be introduced in this game.
Jordan Hughes
>stop doing good things Fuck off.
Landon Lewis
>inb4 we get postapocalyptic AoE where you start with a shelter and bunch of survivors in a wasteland, rediscovering old tech
Wyatt Anderson
WW1 is perfect due to the fact that it was the final war were the old method of warfare was used until trench warfare and artillery started to go full nutso a few months later.
Brody Collins
Not bad. I like how the navy already has a nice set of counters to work from. It's kind of annoying to have the cavalry line become completely useless in the later ages, but I guess that's not a bad way to structure the game.
Players who want to make use of them have to treat the game as if they're going for a 1st, 2nd or maybe 3rd age victory. Only this time if they fail they're left with a bunch of useless units and useless researched techs. Another idea would be to maybe have your cavalry be produced from a stable that becomes a "motorpool" in the later ages that produces motorcycles/cars, and have all your already created cavalry turn into cars when you reach the required age? Though that might be too jarring.
Cooper Mitchell
No linux no buy
Ayden King
And it would lend a bit of a somber tone to the millions of soldiers who died thanks to backwards and outdated secret treaties and alliances. A battlefield scarred by gunpower, shells, and tracks. It also really is an end to the "Age of Empires" as a few dominant superpowers emerge and old dynasties like the Romanovs are killed and the Ottoman Empire crumbles.
Owen Long
if it doesnt have a fixed isometric camera angle im not interested
tfw only play with friends vs AI I've gone to like 1800 rating on HD but honestly it feels more stressful than fun playing against real players
I also watch t90 streams more than I actually play the game
Eli Butler
>until trench warfare and artillery started to go full nutso a few months later. That's kind of the problem. Do you include that in the game? If so, does that mean whoever reaches "imperial age" first basically gets a free win since all your horses and dudes mean nothing to trenches, machine guns and artillery? Or do you fudge things a little and give cavalry and infantry formations a chance against trenches and machine guns?
Parker Powell
I felt that it would be a bit jarring to have your horses turn into motorized vehicles. My thought was to create a power triangle from the first age to have three distinct types of units to choose from.
Cavalry's scouting and speed function would essentially transfer to aircraft while their ability to break through lines is given to tanks and armored cars.
Nolan Brooks
>Age of Empires IV It won't be good.
Ryan Nguyen
it would be the final age, an sober and dramatic point about it. All civs abandoned the classic warfare and went on full gunned trench warfare
Cavalry being replaced by tanks, cannons replaced with artillery, what resumes perfectly.
Justin Diaz
>research trenches >carve up battle lines and fill them with your soldiers >suddenly middle of the map becomes no man's land >slowly creep closer towards the enemy base with further successions of trenches after clearing out each wave they send like you're really playing WW1
That sounds like a lot of fun if balanced correctly.
Julian Cooper
Yeah that makes sense. It would really be a drastic change to the game from how it played at the start. It all depends on the competence of the devs to pull it off I guess.
Jason Sullivan
So lategame battles become embedded trench lines in front of massed artillery firing barrages into the fog of war? Suppose villagers can dig trenches which grant your riflemen +5 range or whatever. An offensive requires massing riflemen and tanks to overrun a position. Alongside all this you're using your cavalry to hit and run their base or try to flank tanks.
Joshua Morris
>Age of Empires IV AT E3
ABOUT FUCKING TIME
DEAR GOD YESSSSSSSSS
Jaxon Ross
Yeah I figure at that point in the game cavalry, or motorized units if they exist, would no longer be part of your main attack force and only be used for raiding. You really wouldn't be able to play this like classic AoE where you just grab a death ball of all the units you've researched and patrol them at the enemy base, you'd get shredded by machine guns.
Andrew Lewis
They still can't compete with the GOAT RTS game, Starcraft. Plebs need not apply

AoE 3 ends just before WW1. All of the Age 4 tech is armored boats, gatling guns and factories. It would make sense for AoE 4 to start just before WW1 and then end at about the vietnam war.
Gabriel Roberts
>Reach Imperial Age >It Ain't Me starts playing

You could always just go around them lmao. Trench clusterfuckery was a thing on the western front because the fighting happened in narrow spaces, on the eastern front, where there was more than enough space to simply go around them it wasn't that prevalent.

Aoe 3 plays a bit loose with the timeline of things and the powergap between WW1 and WW2 was so massive I don't think there's any real way to portray it without either dumbing down WW2 units or making WW1 units much stronger than they need to be.
Jaxson Williams
Yeah but in an RTS you'd probably just trench around your entire base, similar to how people wall in AoE2 now.
Levi Peterson
>AOE2 is 20 years old >you lived long enough to see AOE4 made
feels good lads..
Isaiah Morales
I played RTS games because I liked building bases and watching them work, had mountains of fun in AOE 2 and all the early CnC games doing just that. In RA2 I would capture all the enemy tech I could and build a huge base incorporating all the unique tech possible.
Would love a more building and not esports oriented RTS to come around.
Ryder Torres
Does anyone even build non trash infantry outside of man-at-arms rushes in AoE2? If you think about it that entire line kinda sucks. They're countered by archers - the most spammable unit type in the game and they don't really counter anything except trash infantry, which is also countered by archers. Might as well make knights and get faster units with better ranged armour.
Then do the same thing you do in AoE2 right now - take entire map, boom to your heart's content, make a siege ram (or tank, if it's ww1 era) which only receives 1 damage per any ranged attack and then just laugh at the idiot who thought that turtling is ever a viable strategy. Unless you were baited by fatslob into a viking mirror on black forest or something.
Hunter King
Is AoE2 DE going to have the civs from the expansions?
Elijah Jenkins
It sounds like you'd really enjoy They Are Billions. Look up some playthroughs of the survival maps on youtube, it's extremely base building focused with a side of tower defense and some military raiding. It's not a traditional RTS in the sense that it's two factions versus each other though, it's you against a shitload of zombies.
Benjamin Fisher
They confined it, along with 4 new races
Leo Baker
Just get into city builders bruh, they deliver what you want with far more intricacy. I see what that guy meant by RTS audience being divided and conquered, sometime it feels like majority of people in these nostalgic RTS threads don't even like playing them.
Easton Jackson
They deal OK damage against buildings, but I agree that they have too many counters. At least the Malians receive +4 pierce armor to them by imperial age.
Ryan Wilson
>Does anyone even build non trash infantry outside of man-at-arms rushes in AoE2? Are you talking specifically about the champion line? Some civs have decent bonuses on them. There's also that civ which can make 2 Handed Swordsmen without gold so it's kind of like getting a trash killer that's also made of trash.
Elijah Jackson
I enjoy the strategic aspect of RTS, unfortunately often when people play these games they quickly get into a mental state of trying to optimise things as fast as possible rather than focusing on your strategies/tactics which is the fun part. Winning a game of starcraft 2 because you gookclicked your build order more efficiently than you opponent isn't very fun. Winning a game of starcraft because you manoeuvre your army to pincer attack his bitch terran army's ass is really fun, even though a pincer attack is like, one of the most simple tactics ever. Winning a game of aoe2 because you perfectly micromanaged in the dark age, luring all the deer to your TC and stealing the enemies boar with your scout and then die a feudal rush isn't that fun. Winning a game of aoe2 because you did a surprise allahua ackbar petard attack on his castle with petards and assassinated his king with cavalry archers is fun.
Alexander Wilson
The lead devs had said that AoE was never supposed to be based off history, but more inspired by it. All of the games have been pretty inacurate when it comes to exact times and tech.
They even admited that AoE 3 was the hardest to make because despite the setting being hundreds of years ago, it's still considered "recent" and "new" history so 100% proper time lines and names for eras aren't even a thing.
However generally speaking AoE 1 starts from stone age and ends just before the dark ages. AoE 2 starts in dark ages and ends just before colonial era, while AoE 3 starts in the colonal era. AoE 3 final stage units and tech are all heavly armored, mechanical and steam powered, so giving that the game starts at colonal times it would be a good guess to say that the game would end just before mechanical warfare becomes a thing.
So AoE 4 would be a safe bet to start at around WW1 ish era. As for where it would end that would be a hard one. If it is going for the traditional 4 era limit I would say that ending in the cold war would be a good place, AoE 5 would then be the 90's and aging up to the soon to be future.
Tyler Lee
>playing AoE:DE >he's not playing AoE with a high-res mod
Dunno if its good, but I often mix in champions with my pikemen.
Evan Hill
are there actually people out there that prefer aoe1 over aoe2?
Xavier Hill
I think they originally planned AoE 5 to be Sci-fi space shit if they ever got that far.
Luis White
>brainlet forgets that you can change the graphics to classic on the go with AoE DE why are resetera faux boomerfags so fucking dumb?
Gabriel Torres
I wouldn't really like an AoE game centered on later than WW1 Even if it overlaps a bit with AoE3, I would like AoE4 to be from end of colonial era to WW1, like a lot of anons said in the thread. Further in timeline and I think it wouldn't feel like true Age of Empire mechanics and gameplay. I'm also dying for more stuff centered around that timeline, late colonial era and WWI is very underused in games
AoE3 ended with an (admittedly terrible) option to take a revolution instead of the last age, so I think it would be fair to start the game with the age of revolutions, include america, various latin american and balkan civs, then move on through napoleonic era and end shit with WW1, since it was very much the end of the age of empires. It's too symbolically significant to just use it as the first era. Think about it, the first era in an AoE game is the one where players barely even interact with each other, it's mostly just a bit of scouting, ecoing into the next era and that's where fighting kinda starts. I know that drushes are a thing, but that's what they are - rushes consisting of a few militia and not gigantic slugfests worthy of being called a "Great War".
Jeremiah Hernandez
nope, they never planned that. in fact in a recent interview the director/designer of the games said the studio had contemplated in going back in time even before aoe1, but ideas for aoe4/5 never fluctuated.
Christian Mitchell
Not him, but what I want is a city-builder that also involves some element of conquest and defense. Is there anything like that out there?
Austin Hill
I enjoyed playing them but once the genre pushed more towards balance and competitiveness it just didn't interest me all that much. I'd love an RTS more about claiming/controlling land and ordering your soldiers around than build orders and meta.
Julian Russell
I know you can, you retard. Why would I buy a new game with the same classic graphics when I already own AoE? I've been playing since multiplayer was on the Microsoft Zone.
Speaking of faux boomers...
Wyatt Cruz
It has been for the past year.
Landon Brown
Zeus and Poseidon and other games from it's devs include combat, Stronghold being the most combat focused one they did. Tropico does, Anno does, even ancient german economic strategies like Cultures do.
Lucas Young
Everything's gonna have a build order user, it's just the nature of the genre.
Ryder Hill
Aren't Zeus and Poseidon, Stronghold, etc. mission-based? I'd rather have something where I have to build up and defend the same city over time. To my knowledge that's more like what Tropico and Anno are. Anno 1800 looks good but I'm not going to get EGS for it.
Carter Reyes
How the FUCK do I stop trushing faggots
Jaxson Anderson
AoE 1 was never trully balanced, when DE came out the community helped with it, nowdays the gameplay is solid, though AOE 2 is still superior.
AoE3, when DE comes out, expect Americans as the new race and aboard this to serve as the gap for AoE IV(Fall of the Empires and Colonialism). Really, i expect AoE 3 DE new campaign ending with Otto von Bismark's Last Words. >“Your majesty, so long as you have this present officer corps, you can do as you please. But when this is no longer the case, it will be very different for you.” He then subsequently predicted, “Jena came twenty years after the death of Frederick the Great; the crash will come twenty years after my departure if things go on like this.” >"One day the great European War will come out of some damned foolish thing in the Balkans."
Eli Perry
In Zeus each campaign is generally about building a city, then leaving to build a colony, returning to your original city with the colony as your subject and so on. Obviously there are sandbox modes if you aren't into campaigns though. I'd still recommend the campaigns, the Poseidon ones are especially cool. You spend like five campaigns building up the Atlantean colonial empire and then in the last campaign you play as the last free Greek city trying to defend itself against the Atlantean menace.
Cameron Sanchez
Build buildings foward Build outposts around your base Heavily scout your enemy, find if he's mining stone Aim for a 22-23 villager fast feudal Have a barrack when you click up, have your Scout nearby, pump militias If he comes to trush before you get the feudal, attack his villagers with your militia and scout, pull villagers of your own if needed If not, get man at arms upgrade asap MAA Trush the cunt, force him to defensive towers Build an archery and harass with archers non stop
Wyatt Flores
As long as it works in proton on linux I'll buy it.
Empire Earth 1 was fun, but somehow it feels jankier than AoE2 feels now, later EE games on the other hand were bad even when they were released. 2 was just super generic and soulless, 3 on the other hand is just pure cancer.

Maybe, but it depends on if devs want to pander to the boring Esports crowd again instead of normal players. Trying to make games built around Esports instead of fun always results in failure.

I hope they balance the game better with 4, if you look at civ win stats some are just way too dominant and others loose 60% of the time or more
Light defeats Specialist is cheaply produced. Specialist defeats Heavy. Medium defeats Light and Specialist and has good AA. Heavy has long range shelling capability and generally defeats anything else 1:1 and even 1:2, but is expensive, weak to Specialists, and slow (and thus can be kited by Carriers). Carriers are glass cannons with very long engagement range.
Fleet comp would generally be 2-3 Heavy protected by Lights (vs. Specialist) and Mediums (vs. Carriers), or 2-3 Carriers with similar protection. For someone who is behind, mass Specialists can obliterate an unprepared surface fleet.
Parker King
Shelling sounds like it would break the AoE meta. Even with trebuchets you have to see what you're aiming at. How do you balance artillery that can strike across the entire map without clear line of sight?
