Ace attorney obviously

Ace Attorney, Umineko you don't play

Higurashi then Umineko

Ace attorney. You read the second one. I enjoyed the parts of umineko's manga I read.

ok hows the switch port

how do I get into these when they cry games? are they connected?

higurashi

The stories are completely different, and they're not sequels or anything like that, but they loosely share some characters/concepts. Umineko can also spoil a little bit of Higurashi for you, too. Overall I recommend reading Higu first because it's just as good, if not better, and it'll make Umineko a lot more intriguing if you read it first.

Ace Attorney, Umineko's only selling point is the music

what's the best way to play higu on pc? I know there's like a million different art styles and shit, is there a definitive version/mod pack or something?

>Overall I recommend reading Higu first because it's just as good, if not better, and it'll make Umineko a lot more intriguing if you read it first.
Glad to see someone else who appreciates doing things in the proper order. They're both pretty good on their own, but going from Higurashi to Umineko is a really fun experience.

I only read Umineko and had no trouble. The few characters connected with Higurashi is more of a fanservice than anything and has no need to know who they are

Dunno if the switch is the same as the HD version in steam, but I highly recomend this one since it helps a lot in the pixel hunting that are few investigations

you can enjoy ace attorney without being weeb trash

Ace Attorney is always a fun read, even if you don't love it it's guaranteed to be at least somewhat enjoyable. When they cry series is a lot more hit-or-miss, but if it's your kind of thing it will literally be life-changing

One is visual novel you play, the other is a visual novel. I'd go with ace attorney first since it's fun to play and easier to digest.
The recent switch and PC ports are considered the best right now. The only thing you're missing out on is the old pixel art, which is a legitimate complaint if you're a purist fag. It also has a very, very slightly different script. If you feel that way, then just emulate the games on the DS instead of getting the port.

Both the Ace Attorney and When They Cry series are great, do both. AA trials are great as a break in between the more exhausting arcs of the WTC series.

In terms of sprites and artwork you either play the original, or the PS2 version. The art in the original is admittedly shitty but it has some charm to it if you manage to get used to it. The PS2 art is just overall the better choice imo. The steam version sprites aren't as bad as Umineko's so you can just play it like that as well, but they're still pretty awful and feel really out of place most of the time, at least for me.

As much as I like the original Umineko sprites, I can't handle the Higurashi OG art. The console sprites are just superior for Higurashi.

so basically get higu 1-6 on steam and then follow the autism wiki?

Basically. Hopefully by the time you get through 1-6, 7 and 8 will be done, but if not you can either wait or find the old version online somewhere.

oh wait, the steam versions aren't finished?

No, from what I understand they have like one guy slaving away on it. It's been taking forever for the new versions to come out. The chapters are pretty long though, and they're supposed to be near completion, so by the time you do 1-6 they probably will be done. Thankfully the Umineko translation guys are working on the next installment in the WTC series so that shouldn't be a problem going forward. It's just that MangaGamer sucks ass and doesn't put much priority on re-releasing Higurashi in a reasonable amount of time.

There already are TLs of the last two arcs out there with a slightly rougher translation, however. If it comes to it, you can fall back on those. I did that and it wasn't bad.

Ace Attorney is painfully less anime than Umineko so play it

are 7 and 8 the final parts then? and man, this is one of the things I hate about trying to get into these old japanese franchises sometimes. I'm very lazy and like just being told "here's the good/only version. get this and you're set" and not having to deal with weird mishmashes of mods and patches and whatnot. I'll probably look into this after ever17 though. now that steamlink finally has an ios version, I can read all these vns I've been meaning to get around to while I'm still at work

yeah they're the last two
there's extra stuff that they made afterwards, like some epilogue arcs and arcs with entirely different characters but 1-8 is the main series
it is pretty annoying to deal with but that's just how it is with these old nip nong series, you might get lucky and just have to use the patcher on the steam releases though. especially if you plan on doing ever17 first, that's pretty long.

do I have to go through a similar patching rigamarole for umineko? I heard something about needing to add the voice acting? And yeah it'll probably take me a long time, I'm finishing up rereading good omens before the show comes out (fucked that up, whoops), and then I'm a few cases into the dgs translation. then ever17, higu, and then umi. I'm drowning in weebshit

Umineko has no patching autism involved

github.com/07th-mod
you can add voices and the art from the console port if you want. much easier than higurashi and you only have to do it twice, since umineko's 8 episodes are split into two playable games
