At least part of the failure was caused by its name. Many people simply thought it was just a tablet add-on for the Wii that cost several hundred dollars. That's the same reason why the 3DS had such a rocky start; people just thought it was another (of several) hardware revisions for the DS. That's also one of the reasons why the marketing for the Switch emphasized its name and that it was an entirely new console.

The importance of marketing is laid out clearly by the difference in momentum between WiiU and Switch.

too many games are ports

lifespan super short - switch was announced not long after wii u was out, at least compared to other consoles

people thought it was an addon to the wii

Lack of good games and bad marketing

Some people still believe this. I week ago I saw an ad on craigslist for a wii u describing it as "a wii plus 2 controllers and a tablet controller"

a) bad name, should have named it wii 2 or the nintendo or whatever else just not the wii u

b) garbage gimmick main controller/tablet, should have had a regular controller

>It wasn't a lack of good games, it had plenty.

Oh you sweet summer child.

XCX, Bayo 2, W101, Smash 4, Splatoon, Tropical Freeze, SM3D World, MK8, Pikmin 3, Hyrule Warriors, Yoshi's Wooly World, Pokken, ZombiU, MH3U, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Shovel Knight

I went purely for games that didn't previously exist on something else so no ports. That is plenty of games to justify a system purchase.

please post better. at least make me think you believe it. i have faith in you

Wii had over 50 amazing exclusives, from best sellers like Mario Galaxy and WarioWare
Smooth Movses, to hidden gems like Zangeki no Reginleiv and Captain Rainbow

>terrible actually kiddy marketing
>confusion on it being an add-on to the Wii
>Lacked a "Wii Sports"
>NSMBU was a a lame launch title that looked too much like the old ones
>Most of it's good games were relatively niche
>Gamepad was weird and audiences don't like things that are different

It's a shame because the Gamepad had tons of potential and I sincerely believe it was a better games console than the PS4 and XBone for the first few years.

Leaned too hard into the casual audience that bought the Wii who were only good for a single hardware sale / were unable to distinguish between it and its predecessor.

Bad marketing
Bad name
No real 3D Mario game
No new real 3D Zelda game until the end of it's life cycle

Switch by itself is not a better system but Nintendo fixed these four issues.

that's the entire library of games after 5 years

the first year was a disaster, it launched with nsmb and nintendoland for crying out loud

This. I had friends who were otherwise in-the-know about gaming who just thought it was a tablet addon for the Wii after it was already out for months. This was a Chevy Nova tier case study in how to (not) name your product, and the fact the Switch has succeeded when the Wii U failed and did so with 80% of its games being Wii U ports shows this.

2 weeb rpgs

It was amazing how little they advertised it too. I would rarely ever see it advertised on tv, and remember them saying at the time they were focussing more on social media. It seemed like a very stupid strategy at the time, and I figured they must know something I don't. It didn't make any sense, because they had tons of money too. They probably thought they'd save a few shekels, and that the Wii name would do all the leg-work.

>lifespan super short - switch was announced not long after wii u was out, at least compared to other consoles
The Wii U has a 4.5 year lifespan. The average lifespan for Nintendo consoles is just under 5. The reason people think this is Mario Kart, Smash, and Splatoon didn't show up until like three years in so everyone bough the Wii U then, then a year later were surprised that the Switch was coming out.

>Splatoon
>Debatable
>Being a pedo
LUL

>It wasn't a lack of good games
Unironically please list some down for me. I desperately need more games for it.
