Why do so many people think Bahamut was the fucking villain in FFXV?

The ramifications of the plan to end the Scourge are in-part what make up the human tragedy of the story. What makes that fulfilling is Noctis' acceptance of both the shitty hand they were dealt, and that everything that happened was not only per-ordained, but necessary in the end.

Dawn of the Future is a non-canon story that explores what would happen if Bahamut wasn't in favor of humanity, but in the story proper (even everything in Episode Ardyn) he is playing the long game because he sees the bigger picture.

In Episode Ardyn, Bahamut tells Ardyn that his role is to be the darkness that ushers in the light. Ardyn (and a bunch of people, apparently) took this to mean the Astrals are a bunch of assholes who are using humanity as their playthings. They're missing the bigger picture that all of this was pr-ordained *because* it was the only way to get rid of the Scourge (and Dawn of the Future complicates this by painting Bahamut as the villain and saying he began to view humanity as darkness, again this is a "what-if" scenario and not representative of his actions in-game.)
Also he gave Noctis his place in the afterlife, he didn't save him in the sense that he brought him back to life. Noctis is still straight up dead.

When it came out I assumed it was Luna, but up until now I assumed it was Aera.
It's obvious that somewhere during rewrites to "remove" the FNC from FF15 they axed that plot point, but it's pretty obvious the whole "Bahamut created mass genocide aids to then erase mankind all at once for ulterior motive" thing is the same concept as FF13 with the Fal'Cie trying to bring back their lost deity.
In FF13, they were trying to bring back the Maker (Bhunivelze) but in Versus we know for a fact that Etro was the central figure and that she too departed the world. It's obvious that the "gods" or at the very least Bahamut were trying to call back Etro.

It's neither of their VAs, in both Eng and JP versions so it's not Luna or Aera, it's clearly meant to be Etro or the goddess Eos, they could also just be one and the same.
In the Ardyn DLC you straight up learn that the Oracles are meant to be avatars of the goddess in a way and there even is a mural showing her in both the base game in the citadel (right before you enter the throne room with Ardyn) as well as in Ardyn DLC in the "training" room that Verstael shows you.

Where is it stated that Bahamut *created* the Scourge though? I haven't seen that from Dawn of the Future, and as far as I'm aware the only inkling we have of its origins is from the German localization that Ifrit wrought it with the Meteor (which is dubious at best, but still.)
And to add to this, the core problem is that FF15 was very hastily rewritten and didn't do a proper job of scrubbing the FNC mythology. There's still a shitload of it still left in the game, just not explicitly called as such but anyone that actually knows the FNC lore can see it from a mile away.
Knowing all the old Versus trailers and news descriptions also helps.

Bahamut deliberately caused the Starscourge because the only way to power up his ultimate attack (Exaflare or whatever the novel called it, I don't remember which one it was) was to absorb all the space aids from the planet to power said fucking attack.
That's why he caused it and why he couldn't just use his ultimate all-life-on-the-planet purging attack before, he needed everything infected with the black goo of Japanese unoriginality to do that.

It will be "not-Versus" that takes place inside of Kingdom Hearts 4 and will just be a shadow of its former self and will also be truncated much like FF15 was since it has to fit inside KH4 together with not-TWEWY 2.
Square Enix would never allow Nomura to just reboot FF15 itself with the same characters because it's a horrible business decision that would anger a lot of normies that would instantly criticize the company for essentially buying 120$ worth of pre-alpha with FF15.

See, the thing is that isn't corroborated -anywhere- in the main game or its supplemental lore (Ultimania) so the only conclusion that I can make here is that this scenario was created / altered / resurrected from the scraps of Versus to give context for an alternate, happier ending since they really couldn't do that with the story proper.
It's been stated that Dawn of the Future is a what-if scenario, so I'm going to leave it as that and not take any new pieces of lore that decimate the intent of XV (mainly Episode Luna and Episode Noctis, since Episode Ardyn doesn't necessarily contradict the established lore.)
Like, seriously. There's no other way to interpret DotF than a scenario that exists in parallel to the main story, but not in the timeline of the main story. Time to hug my Ultimania.

Is the Ardynn DLC worth playing? I haven't played since launch but I felt after reading all of the supplemental material about him at the time that he would have been one of the best FF villains by far if it was potrayed better in game. Does the DLC do this properly? It seemed like the others were hour long filler things so I never bothered.

Yes but it's absolutely critical that you watch the anime short about him before playing the DLC otherwise you won't get the full story and the DLC expects you to know the anime short.
Ignis and Prompto DLC aren't fillers in the slightest, only Gladio's is and even then Gilgamesh from Gladio's DLC ties into Ardyn's past.
As for the rest of the DLC,
Gladio is a fun little romp that gives you a little more insight into why he's so obsessed with strength (and an excuse to beat shit up. also the Cor boss fight is the most fun I had in the entire game, gameplay wise.)
Prompto gives insight into his character, gameplay is meh but I enjoyed it because I like Prompto.
Ignis is fantastic, but what a lot of people don't realize is you have to beat the game first since Ignis straight up spoils the ending of XV (but also gives an additional layer to Ignis that makes the ending even sadder imo)
I gave up on this game when it first released and I'm happy I never bothered with the post-launch content. Sounds like it only ever touched the shadow of a "what-could-have-been".

After that Ardyn asks Ifrit to side with him and the half-corrupted Ifrit goes along with it, partly because their goals align and partly because he's influenced by the corruption over which Ardyn has control.
Fun fact, the power of the line of Oracles? It's the same as Ardyn's.
Lunafreya was Ardyn 2.0 in the making, Ardyn killed her to spare her his fate.

I love how at the end of Ardyn DLC it's not actually Aera but Bahamut pretending to be her, if you listen carefully you can hear him saying the same lines as a almost perfectly overlapped echo in the background.
It ties into the FNC mythology where the Fal'Cie don't actually have the power to create miracles, only play tricks on you to manipulate humans.

I can't believe so much work and such good graphics were WASTED on this abortion of a game. The few good moments I felt I had with this game were always instantly ruined by stupid design decisions and the story is god-awful.

The entire ending of the DLC on both sides was great. The final chat with Noctis was particularly moving, on par with the camp at the end of the main game.

Luna's corpse is held by the Empire
AraAra during escape from Niflheim also gets Luna's corpse out of there.
Luna wakes up in a tomb after the 10 year timeskip and realizes she came back to life (Bahamut resurrected her) but she has daemon powers like Ardyn now.
Turns out Oracle powers were Ardyn powers all along, Ardyn's healing/absorption is the same powers the Oracles have and if an Oracle heals too many people you basically get what happened to Ardyn, Luna was already on her way to becoming like him (you can see her being sick in the main game) which is why he killed her to spare her his fate.
Turns out Bahamut is the main villain that's been manipulating the line of Lucis into infighting and spreading Starscourge so he can cover the entire world with it and then use it to power his ultimate attack that will wipe the disease known as mankind from the planet.
Because Ardyn stopped doing his job of spreading the Starscourge, Bahamut wants Luna to take up this task but she says fuck it and goes to look for Noctis and runs into AraAra on the way.
They learn that Noctis and co went to Insomnia ruins to defeat Ardyn so they go after them to warn of Bahamut's bullshit.
They reunite together but Bahamut starts charging his extinction attack that's basically FF6 Kefka lasers.
Chocobros get relegated into helping the people, while Noctis, Luna and AraAra go to get Ardyn to help them.
Ardyn initially refuses to join, but Noctis appeals to his Jesus complex, recognizes him as the true king and hands him the Ring of the Lucii which makes Ardyn agree to help.
The team of four (Ardyn, Noctis, Luna and AraAra), basically classic Warriors of Light, now go to fight Bahamut and defeat him.
Ardyn uses the Ring of the Lucii to kill Bahamut and wipe the Starscourge but doing so required too much energy so the Ring kills him and dissolves.
Ardyn is hailed a hero, his story is told to the people and he is given a public burial as the True King.
Noctis and Luna (now free of Starscourge thanks to Ardyn's sacrifice) mourn Ardyn's passing as new dawn rises for Insomnia and the world.
The end.
That's basically the gist of it, I tl;dr'd it pretty hard but that's the core plot.

It really shows that Tabata wanted to delete as much of Versus as he could from XV, the moment he stepped down and other people started directing the DLC's you could see more and more references to Versus, with Armiger Unleashed being a literal love letter to it, hell it even brought back animations from the 2013 trailer not just the VsXIII trailers.
IIRC there was an interview from a few months ago where the director of Episode Ardyn said that he is proud to have worked on XV but his feelings are mixed because he was sad to see all the Versus content removed from it.
Anyway, people can shit on Nomura all they want but all the interesting lore and story beats from XV come straight for Versus for me, everything else was bad and the entire thing felt disjointed.

That's pretty much the best part of the game, so can't really blame you. It's why I'm so disappointed they killed the project before the team could get the level editor made for the PC version; we could've had endless dungeons and hunts with custom bosses and shit. I don't know about any of this shit. I just want to say that I just finished Episode Ignis, and Ignis is fucking awesome. That was the most fun gameplay wise and story wise in the entire game. And I did all the stupid posts game dungeons.
I can only hope they do 7R Yuffie just as well, if not better.
The only missable things are one or two Photo Ops (Like the one at the Disc) and one or two recipes. Everything else is always available.

But he'll be bitter about being replaced by them or something and wants to come back to life and save his world.

But I suppose that reflects the schism in Ardyn's tactics and Somnus', too.)

He wrote a story scenario and said numerous times it was an epic, meaning Versus XIII was the first of multiple games. I assume he had a vague blueprint of how it would've turned out, he would've had to. That isn't the same as have a fully fleshed out plot and script though.

They cut it so they could make Kingsglaive, which was probably the single most disastrous decision they made going from Versus to XV. The main goal of the movie (making XV attractive to mainstream western audiences) failed, even after they went all out hiring Hollywood actors and everything, and in the process they kneecapped the actual XV game's story by getting rid of the main impetus for Noctis and the gang's quest in-game, so anyone who didn't watch the movie gets the feeling they're starting with the second game in a trilogy.

Oh yeah the plot definitely changed a fair amount. 2006 things were still vague and Noctis didn't even have a name I think. Then come 2011 things were more fleshed out but again the invasion stuff kept changing, one minute they're rushing to escape the city, the next they're still there after the crystal had been stolen. Then there's Stella becoming Noctis' childhood friend all of a sudden.
Most of the major rewrites seemed to occur during the 2012 period when they wanted to move versus to PS4. So they had to trim the fat and fit the story into one game and meet deadlines.
Characters were merged, Ravus and Sapphirus, an alitssian general were thrown together to make one character for story simplicity. Luna was barely in the story etc. The invasion was cut from the actual game.

Even before the game released it seemed like they were hinting at Gladio's father betraying the king, but that shit would've overcomplicated the plot so they changed the character in the movie to some guy close to Nyx.
Why else would they make Gladio's dad a member of the main cast in the 2013 trailer? He's not even in FFXV, they completely omitted him. Not to mention he looks kind of evil anyway. And Versus was inspired by Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet, the latter of which has a treacherous uncle backstabbing the king.
They still don't mention anything about noctis sleeping and his soul seeing ability. Kinda doubt it might be real since it seems to be lacking some of the sleep themes nomura is fond of.

I think Nomura had some concepts, like things he thought would be cool to try in a game and themes he wanted to touch upon. But the solid details were never particularly fleshed out because they didn't get that far into development.
With Verum Rex, it will probably explore ideas and themes that Nomura wanted to use in Versus XIII, but it won't be a 1v1 of Versus since it has to fit into the framework and lore of KH. And it's clear whoever Yozora is, he's connected to Sora and Riku.

Insomnia would've been the most developed part of the original game I think seeing as it was the prologue. I'm guessing Gladio's father being a traitor/usurper was something that would've made more sense if Gladio and Noctis were present for the invasion, but they weren't in XV so making Clarus a traitor was unnecessary and would've been a little confusing to bring up.
The game was like 20-30% complete I think? So not a whole lot else though besides general story beats.

Like I remember there was someone saying that there was some significance behind the sigil for each country(lucis has the skull) saying that each one had their own eidolon.
He seemed like more of an Axel/Reno type judging by early trailers and information. Then they changed him into a cinnamon roll for some reason. Seemed like he'd be a lot more troubled originally, probably because he was a clone and an orphan.
Yeah it can easily be made up. But the Eidolon thing could hold some truth given that Niflheim had dragon symbols all over their flags and there was concept art of Odin and Bahamut clashing in front of the citadel.
Also I don't think any of the Astrals in XV were originally Gods in Versus, again another "leak" suggested this. Creatures like Leviathan were just like guardians of the kingdoms while the 4 crystals themselves were like gods similar to Type-0.
