Reimu is the Hakurei shrine maiden. She maintains the border between Gensokyo and the outside world. Her best friend is Marisa, who is a magician/thief living in the forest of magic. Whenever someone causes some kind of incident that could threaten the balance of Gensokyo, Reimu and whichever other protagonist gets sent out head out to deal with it. These incidents range from actually serious one (Underground bird threatens to nuke the world, Lunarian assholes try to terraform earth, ghost and half-ghost try and steal spring) to the less serious (there's lots of flowers, the seasons are out of whack, there's a ghost ship in the sky)
This chart is missing touhou 16, but otherwise is mostly up to date.

Dunno why but I kinda felt like normal would be babymode so I just went with hardmode right off the bat. Doesn't seem to be the case though, a lot of people in here are saying they're playing on normal

- Satori is harder than other types
- linear is often a pain, like against Rin
- bomb is weak as hell, making it poor for offensive bomb use
meanwhile ReimuC and MarisaA assrape everything in survival play. MarisaB is also mighty but imo much harder to use than all others.

Maximizing efficiency is only for fun. IN is pretty lenient. But if you want to do big dick damage then you'll have to learn to Malice cannon (which is really pretty easy)

Double shot types is a really fun mechanic, you'll probably learn to like it
The one that is most similar to normal shot types is Border team, so start with them

I found 10 to be accessible on easy mode but I only started with it because it was the newest game at the time. Then I didn't play another one until 13 which was also not bad. 8 was pretty easy, too. 6, 7, 11 and 12 I struggled with. Never played 9, or any game past 13.

Focusing on a single mode in IN is important only for scoring and using more continues, don't worry too much about constantly switching characters

Whenever some youkai or whatever causes an incident, Reimu Hakurei (a lazy, grouchy shrine maiden whose family has maintained the barrier protecting Gensokyo since its foundation), Marisa Kirisame (a magician who loves lasers and stealing) and whoever else is playable this time head out to resolve it.

The "tone" of the games is usually pretty light; everyone's kind of an asshole to each other and the game usually ends with the protagonists having tea with the final boss. Boss themes are often more popular than Stage themes, so that's not too common, really. I can't even think of any other example, offhand. I guess Voyage 1969/70 are pretty popular, but I don't think they outperform Lunatic Princess or History of the Moon.

PCB, IN and MoF are all great.
