I wanna play an RPG, but I'm kinda burned out.

Pillars 1 was decent, but the characters felt boring, and the plot was lifeless and up it's ass , with no vibrancy and energy. The fact I disliked most NPCs and cant remember them is a serious problem.

Pathfinder Kingmaker was better, with a fun ruleset, but WOW, was it buggy. I had to do miracles to get it running sometimes and there were game breaking bugs constantly, and the whole 'being a ruler shit' was bad. The city didnt change, and so much felt like almost pointless.

Divinity Original Sin1 was good, but the story just -stopped- for me. Too much comedy and memes, and stupid shit like a COSMIC WORLD ENDING PLOT out of nowhere.

Wasteland 2 had no roleplaying, if I want just combat, I might was well, play X-Com.

Torment was horrible. Way too much up it's ass with a boring combat system a horrible gameplay.

Mount and Blade is great, but I've played it too much and I'm done with it.

Underrail has no plot and it's lore is very controlled. After a while, lonely as fuck exploration feels sad and disjointed.

Skyrim was fun for a while. But the story is pretty shitty and again no memorable characters. Plus, I was fighting fucking Dragons since like hour one.These are the world ending threats? Who gives a shit? Just send a mamoth or something.

Writing is all over the place and the pacing is generally poor, but other than that pretty enjoyable games if you like Baldur's Gate style RTWP gameplay. The second one had a turn-based mode as well, but I haven't tried it so I don't know if it's an improvement.

Clunky, unpolished and slow-paced. Not a terrible game, but I'd only recommend it if you loved the original Wasteland, or have a boner for turn-based tactics and are hungry for something new. The sequel is looking better, but it's not out yet.

Full of cool original ideas, but somehow they failed to make a decent game out of it. Bad writing, lame characters, poorly designed combat. Don't bother.

A cool story that's unfortunately ruined by literally constant attempts at humor. Some of the best turn-based combat in the genre, even though it's not that balanced and has many potential exploit. Has some pacing issues, but nothing terrible. Lots of neat world interactivity options that are sorely lacking from most RPGs. You can safely skip the first one because the stories don't matter and the second one is an imporvement in every way except the dumb armor system.

But these newer games seem to lack a bit of the old spark.

I was playing Fallout 4, and for a while I was blown away. Improved gameplay, better graphics, (modded)...but after a while I realized the story was pretty boring- like I was not biting the main plotline. 20 hours+ in, and I hadnt even gone into Diamond City. And the whole settlement system, seemed like I was replacing content on the world- like they gave me an empty world, with generic NPCs and told me to fill it. This wasnt roleplaying.Later on, I also realized the game had minimal roleplaying either, so that was that.

Maybe I need a break from games.

Problem with Numanuma is it is clearly suffered from too many cooks in the kitchen and being based on a setting that's weird solely for the sake of being weird. It's not a property I would base a story-heavy CRPG on personally because it's so modular and left to player and GM to cooperate on and expand during play. One thing game did right was having alternate solutions to basically everything. Combat is usually something you do willingly or last resort fuckup when everything else has failed.

Oh, and to add to this: image playing Fallout: Tactics back in the day, liking it, but you ended up wishing that there were actual roleplaying elements added to the game. That's Wasteland 2. If that's not you, skip the game. If you're some fag that wants to RP a relationship with members of your team, skip it and go play a Bioware/Obsidian RPG. I happened to like Fallout: Tactics so I ended up satisfied that I backed it. I knew what I was getting into.

And there's still no semblance of hope about NWN 3 being a real thing.

Well, imagine that but it's strictly turn based with a better combat system, actual roleplaying elements, and an overworld map akin to Fallout 1/2 instead of being locked behind missions. That's basically Wasteland 2. The writing was also decent without being try-hard/lore dumps like PoE and Torment 2. My only real complaint is that some of the world map is locked behind radiation fields that require you to beat certain main quests. That bothered me a bit but it wasn't a deal-breaker.

They're all worth playing, but I would only pay for divinity imo.

To what end? It's a generic universal roleplaying system. You'd just be licensing the ruleset seeing as setting has no real identity.

Wasteland 2 was alright, I enjoyed it for some 40 odd hours or so. Torment: Tides of Numenera tries too hard to emulate the uniqueness of Planescape's setting and utterly fails at it. I don't think I cared for a single NPC in the whole game. Didn't play the first Original Sin, but the second one is pretty good. Was worried the soundtrack wouldn't be that good with Kiril now gone, but the new guy did outstanding work. As for Pillars of Eternity, the first one is enjoyable, nothing special, but I can't say I've enjoyed the sequel at all and I spent about 10 or so hours playing it before just uninstalling.

This. Wasteland and Pillars gets really boring and easy after few main quests. And Planescape Torment Numenera is just a boring walls of texts with no gameplay. And characters in both games suck like shit. At least Baldur Gate and Planescape Torment had memorable characters and story. These games are just copies with little to no interesting writing in it.

NWN2 OC's companions were the blandest pieces of stereotypes imaginable. Though, Khelgar, Neeshka and Shandra were total bros and despite being two-liners with little to no character progression I really liked adventuring with them.

The companion roster was already pre-established by Josh Sawyer who took to himself to be narrative lead duing the Figstarter campaign, and the fans were bitching how boring it is. Someone at Obsidian came up with Ydwin and fans fell in love with her, but at this point 90% of resources were allocated, Sawyer was being difficult about the budget and this insanely complicated relationship system made it difficult to implement. So, they went with this sidekick idea that EVERYBODY hated and then with this ridiculous 5 mln stretch goal that failed. Much to Sawyer's relief because he personally didn't care about the character and was concerned about the budget of the game.

When the DLC came, writers wanted to make her a full companion - there were vestige files pointing to that, but once again they got fucked by this stupid relationship system that turned out to be broken and not worth the hassle, an idiotic decision to make the game fully voiced and budgetary issues. Ydwin's writer didn't bother to fight for her all that much - he's a mercenary that only got her by accident. So she kept getting a short end of the stick.

They aren't high level encounters. The game expects you to have a decent small guns skill/melee/other combat skill with at least one meat shield. You can obtain that in Klamath after you pick up Sulik. Both of which are extremely easy to do and the game basically kicks you in the nuts and tells you to do that. Not that user, but this is just fucking semantics. It's still a turn based game, you can even fucking enable the option that it pauses after every characters turn.
Rtwp is straight up worse than an actual turn based system, it's just the same structure but with less polish and less options for doing fun things. Now you can argue that you want a different turn based system, for example one where you issue all your party commands for the round and then it plays out simultaneously with the enemies or something, but no matter what you do any form of turn based combat is going to be massively superior to rtwp. It's nice to actually make decisions instead of simply pre-buff and either watch the fight play out, or hit space bar now and then to use one spell or item. And to have no indication at all how long that item or spell will take to complete and take effect.
