I don't have a problem with Sonic having a sword, I have a problem with the game not being enjoyable to play.
You have the Storybook series' shitty proto-boost gameplay style, with forced waggling for the sword, most environments just being green plains or forests outside of a select few, poor boss fight design, and a 2 hour long story mode. That's just off the top of my head.

But it had style, it had the music, it had writing by a person that actually knew what Sonic was. It had the IT factor new Sonic is sorely missing. Sure Colors is a more competent game but it is so fucking boring with its shit voices, cynical writing, bullshit more trendy vocal theme and safe boring gameplay. sonic has to fight an evil genie to keep him from erasing the arabian nights, and also to not die, because he was shot with some fire thing that will kill him in a few days.
it gets better as you go on because you level up and unlock skills to handle better and move faster. i haven't played it much since my initial playthrough several years ago but i remember enemies that turn you into stone being extremely frustrating.

Colors did not "get it right" though. The gameplay is uninteresting and rigid. It's a safe competent game that reeks of a development team trying their hardest to make the game manageable for people who couldn't handle being in control.

Evening Star made a good retro Sonic game, basically a totally different category and Team Sonic Racing did not "get it right for style at all" in addition to being a straight downgrade from Transformed and even the original in some ways. The other 2 used the IP in the most generic way possible but at least spared us the self aware shit.

the only thing that can fix that shitty sonic movie is a crush 40 song blasting during the climax. that shitty power ranger movie is watchable because you know for a fact GO GO POWER RANGERS is going to play near the end because it is the easiest most obvious way to make the audience happy. I completely ignored Aquarion Logos when it was airing until on a whim I downloaded episode 25 because I knew they were going to hit the song literally everybody likes to fool people enjoying the ending. Sousei No Aquarion played exactly when it was supposed to, I smiled like a retard, had a great time, never watched the rest of the show. It was amazing.

With Me is actually the coolest final boss song in the series. Songs in the perspective of the characters are really neat.
