I only played the GBA Fire Emblems and while characters weren't the strong suit of those games, I heard they get even worse in the new ones while simultaneously neutering the gameplay. Is this true?

Gameplay in Fates/Conquest is extremely good.
Characters sort of suck dick, I can't think of a support that was near as good as Serra/Lucius or Matthew/Jaffar.

Conquest has good gameplay for most ot he part, at least by FE standards.

Also sexy characters.

While you're partially right about supports, thing is that there are a ton of supports in FE7 that also suck dick.

That's fair enough. It's been long enough since I've played FE7 that just about the only supports I remember are those two.

Yeah it really suffered from quantity over quality with the supports. Most characters just have a single trait or that is emphasised and beat to death especially with non major characters. Doesn't help a massive amount of supports are taken up entirely by Corrin.

Good gameplay and some of the characters are pretty good. Plus the class switching system adds some interesting and different playthroughs.

Mostly this.
For the most part.
I don't think the gameplay of Conquest is particularly good. It gets old that in every chapter shit goes south in the worst way possible, and the game becomes less about strategy and more about testing your patience and willingness to repeat missions, at least in Class mode. The one mission I did enjoy was the one with the respawning enemies; everything else was mediocre.

That's a problem with the support system, not the characters, stop it with this meme.

because there's an actual game behind the glorified VN

If you think about it a lot of the past games have some really shit supports you had to waste a point and a whole play through to see. In fates you can see one support and decide it can fuck off or not. Plus it does have some really good supports as well like Elise and Arthur, Odin and Kagero, Azura and Laslow, Odin and Laslow, Xander and Sakura, Ryoma and Elise just to name a few of them. Sure there are some shit ones. Every game has a good amount of shit ones, but it does even out.

The gameplay is fun. The story is just the worst though, and the characters are more like 1-D charicatures. I played Path of Radiance recently and followed the whole convoluted story, and then moved on to Radiant Dawn and skipped all the story bullshit

What difficulty? Pairing up for Speed and pointing Camilla at anything that doesn't have WTA should get you through most of Hard Classic.

Characters get way worse, but the gameplay is mostly ok. Stay away from Awakening though.

Not really, at least you can remember the unlike half of 6's cast and most of 9 and 10's cast. You can cherry pick bad ones in both games but at least everyone has one memorable support, this is not the case in past games.

I really hope characters in Three Houses have more depth. A lot of characters in Fates felt one dimensional as shit.

Side battles that have any amount of side characters associated with their plots certainly sounds promising so far.

Only good thing about Fates was the music.
