It's really quite a crap game, some enjoyable grind near the beginning but as you start to max out your first few SSRs you hit the wall. I quit once the priest's arguments started sounding convincing.

Depends on the games you want to talk about, but generally I think its pretty easy to understand why gacha and mobage are so popular if you have a background playing MMO's and other grind heavy JP games.

They are largely character focused, highly customizable, always active in terms of content (unless you're FGO in 2019) and for whatever reason mobage is way more fun to talk about with people who play the same game than a lot of other games.

I don't quite like chinese skinner boxes, nor the people who play them.

This, every Gacha is fun until you max out enough dudes to fill out however many is the max.

The last (and probably the only) good one was the original Blood Brothers.
Mainly because of the gacha aspect of the game being actually optional.
It was one of those "p2w by design" games that didn't feel terrible to play for free. The event cycle was neatly balanced and while winning every event for free was impossible, the game allowed you to save up resources it threw at you during some parts of the cycle and then burn through them during another event your team was most suited for doing. So winning legendaries and high tournament titles was possible even for pure f2p players.
Not to mention, the game having an actual market created a real economy allowing dedicated players to amass a considerable amount of in-game wealth without paying a penny.

The depth of the progression in the game was also quite nice. Evolving your monsters perfectly, getting well-suited skills for your hero, acquiring optimal team compositions for events - everything felt great.
Too bad, the game is literally dead. I've tried giving a chance to a couple other gacha shits, but nothing felt even remotely as good as Blood Brothers so I dropped the whole genre first and the entirety of mobile gaming second.
Now I have console emulators on my phone.

It was alright. How does being way far behind with no surprises all while you give hardly get any free quartz. Also hope you enjoy a shit ton of reruns soon and the eventual 7 months of no main story. That is if NA is still around.

The pay-to-waifu aspect of it doesn't bother me much, since only gullable idiots do it. What I don't like about gacha, though, are all the limited time events. They expect you to schedule your life around some shitty phone game. Which makes me wonder: Where do whales get their money if they aren't working jobs that make keeping up with these games impractical? Are they mooching off their relatives / trust fund kids?

Even GBF gacha shits the bed after about a year or so of playing. Comparatively generous amounts of SSRs doesn't translate to quality when so much of them are just simply trash, or you want a specific one in the muddied pool with lackluster rate up. So your only option left is to spark if you want someone in particular, so unless you're whaling you only get to really roll twice a year. If I can't roll at least once every few months at minimum and get a rate up unit with those resources, it's just a shit gacha. I wish world governments would just shit all over gacha games with regulations, they don't deserve to exist with their greed, and they make the entire industry worse off

Right. It's just that I see people talk about FGO, Granblue, or even Dragalia and I don't actually hear about how they play outside of the gacha aspect, which is something that many games could add on.

F:GO is fine, it takes a little bit of problem solving at points and the real skill in the game is clearing stuff as fast as possible. The fights take fucking forever though and I believe modern gacha has moved to automated fight systems or close to it, probably because of cheaters using scripts to farm.

Then there's stuff like Honkai which is character action boiled down so it can run on a phone, a few scrolling shooters, some rhythm games and probably some others I can't remember.
