The only people who didn’t like FF8 were actual idiots who couldn’t figure out the junction system.
The only people who didn’t like FF8 were actual idiots who couldn’t figure out the junction system
...Whatever.
No. It was unpopular when it was new, its unpopular now. That's cool if you like it, but dont pretend you're superior for liking something that's not good.
Spam Guardian Force until the game ends
At least the story is good
FFXIII and FFXV are (yikes)
That's not true.
There are also idiots who couldn't appreciate the realistic, flawed design of the cast as well as Squall's slow and intentionally incomplete character development.
FFVIII is just too kino for the average JRPG player, and that's okay.
Junction was shit but my main problem was that nothing made any fucking sense, even by Final Fantasy standards.
Still worth at least one playthrough for the absolute insanity of it all.
Except the people who figured out the junction system know how absolutely fucking broken it is.
You can invalidate the game's difficulty within the first 15 minutes.
Not even Square gives a fuck.
There was nothing that grabbed me. FF12’s combat has problems but I still enjoyed the game.
Yeah, you need a pretty high IQ to be able to enjoy FFVIII.
Impossible to read
Zoom away Zoomie. Get off your phone.
I liked it, but there's many other reasons other people didn't like it. Like the horrible translation and Rinoa. Which, even as a fan of the game, I recognize are flaws.
Good lord, why is FF8 so goddamn kino? The fight with Edea at the end of disc 2 was so kino I overdosed. That sound effect whoosh, then this music:
youtube.com
So fucking dramatic. So fucking kino. Oh good lord I'm going to overdose again
This is a good image. I agree on most of these.
Rionas stuffy shorts!
Rinoa is a little bit of a thot, but not full thot. She knows she's seducing Squall, but she's nice about it and encourages him to be manly. Also she launches her dog like a fucking good boy cannon shell.
The people who say Junctioning is more advanced than Materia don't know the difference between a skill floor and a skill ceiling. Once you "get" Junctioning, there is not much to it. Whereas VII's Materia system is simple enough to understand but has far more mechanical variety and room for experimentation.
Also the idea that FFIV's battle system is amazing or challenging is laughable, it's one of the easiest (outside of the DS version) and most shallow FFs.
>spending hours in battle to draw magic so you can battle
Yikes
>spending hours fighting garbage to level up
Yikes. Junctioning is unironically better since you can use the magic you get.
I only hated Rinoa. I like the junction system.
I remember people acting like the junction system was rocket science when the game came out. People are too retarded to follow tutorials.
my problem wasn't the junction system
my problem was constantly masturbating to quistis and selphie
>blitzball is often regarded as the greatest FF minigame of all time
Whoever made this list has brain damage. BB was so horrendously busted that you could score a single point, steal the ball and sit behind the goal box *every time* if you wanted to easily win a match.
>turned two rare triple triad cards into 100 of the items that make you invincible and give infinite limit breaks for a period of time
EZ game EZ life
Maybe I'm just a fucking retarded but don't you have to draw magic in order to junction?
The problem with Rinoa is not her personality. It's that her inclusion into the story is just to force a weak love tangent. You could remove her from the story and little would change. Squall would still find the motivation to fight Ultamecia based on his Laguna flashbacks, his personal motivation not wanting to be forgotten and the story forcing him into the past.
Rinoa is just in the game because Kitase demanded there be a love story. But just like FFX, he sucks at telling a love story. They just become weak diversions for a plot that otherwise had nothing to do with love.
fpbp
I legitimately thought Quistis was an android until a year ago and I played this game when it came out.
I really really love FF8 but I'm replaying it right now and I self imposed some rules to keep the game from being too much of a cakewalk; no card playing, no item->magic refinement (item->item is fine), and geez even with that restriction, using only magic you find on enemies the game is extremely easy to break. Maybe I should have also hacked the magic stock limit to be 30 or something rather than 100, I don't know.
Or just pick Brother and the goalie standing literally outside the arena and win every game. Don't even need Tidus or Wakka on the team. Just those two. Also, it's fucking water polo with a turn based system. One of the worst ideas ever. It would be like making a turn based Dragon Ball Budokai game.
No. You could also convert certain items to magic and use that as a junction.
If you buy 30 tents you can convert those to 300 Curaga, junction them and break the game over your knee with a sickening crack.
It's the dumb level scaling which mostly makes the game bad as it's actually counterproductive to level up and on the other hand not leveling up and abusing junctioning just outright breaks the game
it's more fluid grinding for junction magic than for levels since there is no MP, if you're farming some monsters that have what you want there is usually also one with a supportive spell so you can cast directly from the monster without using your stock essentially casting the spell for free
You don't have to draw at all. The best way to get magic is by refining items with the GF abilites. When I play I never draw at all unless it's for a spell that's hard to refine or if it's the rare spell that's actually useful in battle like meltdown or float.
Rinoa was a dork but damn to I love spats.
why do people pretend the Junction system had any depth? all you do was put magic into slots and grinding magic is boring as shit
I don't get it either. People act like junctioning death to status and insta-killing everything is some kind of crazy next-level shit
BLU should have been gourmet cooks in FFXIV.
Rinoa gave Squall the ability to soften up to relying on people emotionally and also made him realize how having someone to love could make him truly happy and fulfilled instead of going on violent tangents with Seifer. On the other hand, Squall made Rinoa realize that loyalty and allowing a man to be a man can give her a stable lover and someone who can protect her.
On the other hand, I think that it would've been better if Zell's relationship with the girl from the library was more fleshed out. Could've been really funny and cute.
I'm a hardcore FF8 fan, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Balamb Garden where I would often train with Zell in the training center and help Selphie with the Garden Festival, but one day as I was talking to Selphie, we went to my dormitory for a private talk. She immediately said, "You know you could live with us forever.." I gave her a confused look and she continued, "We understand that you live on earth and you REALLY wish to live here". I then said "How..How did you know?" She then giggled and said "Because we've been watching you, silly!"
This was a dream come true and I almost cried right there. She then said, "I talked with Headmaster Cid and he agreed that you would be PERFECT for SeeD, you just have to do...one thing". She then held my hand and looked deep into my eyes and said "...You have to kill yourself for the transfer to work correctly." I then gave her some questions, "How long do I have before the deal expires?" She then said "Cid said 3 months.." I added by saying "What's the most painless way?..." She giggled again, "Suicide will require pain buuut...if you want it quick...Get a gun and a nice shot to the head works.
I then agreed and she gave me a kiss on the forehead, "I know this will be tough but once it's over and done, you'll get to live here!" I then woke up and this was last week and i purchased a gun. I might actually kill myself because that dream just felt too real to be fake and my life isn't doing so grand.
>that cut to a flowery field while eating sounds happen
>tfw you can do that to people enemies
user had problems.
Where's the bad breath one?
I love this game, but it's been forever since I've actually played it. Is the the translation as bad as FF7's or is it passable?
takes me back
Lately I have had a growing curiosity to play 13 and its sequels.
I love this pasta.
I agree that junctioning is pretty shallow, but you shouldn't need to grind at all. Most GFs have abilities to create magic outside of combat. Ideally you should only ever use draw a handful of times in any given play through.
8 is my fav and Rinoa is best girl.
my personal autism is evaluating just how much better webcomics would be without text in the last panel. this one would definitely improve.
He's already waiting there, bros.....for you....
This.
Squall realized she was a great catch and snatched her up at the end.
That's not cool or funny, get the fuck out.
you're gonna be greatly disappointed
XIII trilogy isn't as bad as people say.
I can't blame you with how stiff she is, but what was your reasoning?
jesus those noses are horrible
Honestly can't wait to join Rob and tell him about Breath Of The Wild.
I've played like half of FF13 and it's not that bad. The story is no were near as complicated as people say it is, the datalog thing is a meme. My main gripe is that battles have a tendency to go on for too long.
>draw
>draw
>draw
Truly riveting gameplay
I've seen this exact same post before, you must be a die hard FFVIII fan.
retard
I can't help it, it's been ten years and I'm sat bored shitless in a personal drought of games I give a fuck about. There's this recurring thought that while I can't remember what it is I do want to play I've heard how shit 13 is, but I want to see it.
I hope I remember where my backlog is before I succumb to the curiosity.
ur playin it wrong boi
The only people who liked FF8 were actual idiots who thought the junction system was complex instead of poorly explained and simple once understood
She shot lasers out of her eyes and missiles out of her chest you fucking tell me.
Ahhh... there it is. Now it's a ff8 thread
Squall being forced to do good boyfriend things because Rinoa keeps using her cute girlfriend magic!
Make sure to play the PC version for Japanese voices. And get ready for the first seven chapters to be annoying as fuck. The game gets better after that though. Except one particular character is still shit at the end (same kind of character as Rinoa).
you are literally me and youre a winner.
If your GFs are dealing more damage than your melee attacks you're not junctioning the right spells to Atk, user.
Do you guys ever think Rinoa rides Squall while Quistis watches and cries in a corner?
People who did figure it out and abused it to make the game an absolute joke tend to hate it too. Of course they blame the game when it's entirely their fault for using the cheesiest strategy available.
Shame this isn't updated. However:
>didn't play the cluster of fun that is FFIII
Disregarded.
i just listened to her Japanese voice. Combined with that shitty look perpetually on her face I'm absolute diamond solid.
Maaya Sakamoto is a miracle of the universe.
She's a bad character not because of her voice or design, but because of her role in the story. Basically, there's a really implausible situation tied to her that makes no sense and gets a teammate killed. Then she does it AGAIN near the end of the game.
Rinoa uses her thot powers for the good of the world
That's more or less FF13 in a nutshell. Designs are fine. Voice acting in both languages is generally good. Music is good. It's just a bunch of ideas people working on a game with NO idea as to how to write a story. Which makes it all fall apart. Plus the first game is kinda slow to get the meat of its gameplay mechanics which is a pain in the ass. The story is hard to swallow by the time you get to the good aspects of the gameplay.
>good premise
>great premise
>great premise
>great premise
>excellent premise
i want whoever made this image to define "premise" for me because there's no way you can keep using that word so much without explaining themselves
It's true. She has an independent streak, but she's submissive with Squall to make him nut up and fight harder. She realizes he needs to be dominant and confident, so she relies on his strength and makes it a point to tell him how safe he makes her feel. She encourages his primal urges to protect his mate, and she rewards him with affection and appreciation of his manliness.
Rinoa may be the only positive representation of a thot in video games.
Premise basically means it had a good idea. But having a good idea and implementing that idea are completely different.
Final Fantasy as a series is the perfect example of having good ideas, but not implementing them well. Most FF games start out with a great premise. Then some dumb plot twist halfway through makes the initial premise invalid and the story switches focus to something else.
I might give it a whirl. It was a big piece of FF history that I observed, that was big enough to get 3 games, but didn't partake in.
Ask yourself if you've ever loved your waifu so much you made 3 games about her.
Yes. It was unpopular when it was new because 7 retards thought it would be 7-2 and couldn't work out the junction system like op said
You must be an absolute fucking retard if that was the most effective way you could find to do damage. GFs are not usually used by anyone for anything other than junctioning which you probably didn't understand.
More like idiots who didn't explore and therefore bitched about the orphanage thing and idiots who sent the civilian to the missile base and therefore bitched about the romance being "sudden"
Junction system was easy to figure out. I just don't know how anyone could like a system so insanely tedious to deal with.
>X
>Good story
HA HA HA HA
Or, you know, people who fucking hate pretentious storygame JRPG garbage. Final Fantasy should have been a TV or movie series for ADD morons.
I'm someone who likes RPGs where you can use status/magical effects on physical attack. Which is more rare than you'd probably think. And FFVIII did it really well. It's also not hard or tedious, since there's an auto junction system.
Back to fortnite.
t's a little weird how they act like they're married from disc 3 on.
What you're thinking of is "flirty" user.
It was. It's called Star Wars and Gundam.
Yeah, Rinoa's not a thot. She's a good girlfriend.
That’s a problem I have with waifu discussions, if a girl tip toes outside of certain traits she’s a thot slut whore.
Which, in addition to promoting bland repetition of traits, is usually inconsistent and totally ad hoc.
Your waifu is a slut. Mai waifu is a pure goddess. Because she's in a monogamous relationship with someone else from her game.
I bet RInoa got preggo shortly after the end of the credits.
They all end up that way. But being written for male appeal either wear skimpy clothing or have flirty personalities which irl would mean they probably are not virginal. Goes for them all.
>They all end up that way.
Not the best girls. They always get cockblocked.
That’s true I guess.
I so badly want to get into 6 but can't for the life of me. I lose interest around 2-3 hours in every time.
I figured out the junction system it's completely broken and destroys all game balance it's retarded faceroll tier easy once you figure it out, the game is just generally not very good neither is 9, in fact the entire PS1 trinity of FF games was mediocre.
Every FF game can be broken like that. Its your fault for playing the game with a manual.
>FFVII revolutionized the idea of modern, futuristic setting
I thought Phantasy Star did that first
It did. And Chrono Trigger and many others.
>That’s a problem I have with waifu discussions, if a girl tip toes outside of certain traits she’s a thot slut whore.
As a Rise fan, I know what you mean.
I think it did a better job in certain ways, like having a modern city realized in quasi 3D rather than what are medieval villages and palaces with technological elements. It has a more modern feel as a result. So it was a leap forward which I think is all that’s meant
FFT > FF8 > FFTA > FF7
all other final fantasy games are mainly irrelevant
It’s like a lot of feminist critiques of gaming. They’re rarely satisfied regardless of approach except for a handful of female characters. So if they had their way all female characters would be mildly varied replicants of that handful
Protip: at the beginning of the game junction to the magic stat first. This makes each subsequent draw absorb 9 units of the spell instead of 3 or 4.
It's not really a modern city though. It's more of a dystopian/scum version of a scifi city. Like out of Robocop or Judge Dredd (or Final Fantasy XIII). An actual modern city would be like the cities in Final Fantasy VIII. Which took more than a little inspiration from Paris and London.
How did Square go from a patrician game like FF8 to an absolutely generic, ugly, forgettable turd like FF9?
I know how to junction, read the manual and listened to the Quistis tutorial.
I just hated drawing for spells.
The story going to shit at disc 3
The badly written romance
Levelscaling
Why are Final Fantasy 8 fags so damn uppity? The game's a slog.
i didn't like because of disc 3 and 4 when you discover your whole party has amnesia because of GF
FFVIII and IX were in development at the same time by two different teams. And while I dislike the design style in IX, its not really ugly. The world looks beautiful. Problem is, the world is boring because it's just set pieces.
>someone else in the internet that liked 8 and not 9
I think I'm gonna break down and cry now. I felt so alone until today...
you cant' just post a lewd with nice colors/rendering and not give me sauce
I didn't hate 9, but it's so fucking forgettable. Don't know why people praise it.
Right but I mean architectually it has modern urban aesthetics in mind. While Age of Antiquity is medieval palatial designs with a scientific twist.
It has a lot of good stuff and therefore hipsters who do not want to say they like 7 or 6 stan it
Like what? Nothing stands out. The fucking main boss just appears out of nowhere. All the characters are ugly. Character system is boring.
You should! I loved it! I enjoyed, so I think you would too.
>8
>better than 7
You're right about Tactics, but how can you take such a huge leap after? Would really just like to see how your mind works.
They loke the vivi story. They like the war plot with everyone being ravaged by magical arms set in motion by a puppeteer.
I agree it does not cohere well enough
8 is gorgeous nonsense. The atmosphere is utterly unique. Great soundtrack. The junction system is my favourite non-tactics FF battle system because of how broken it is. Triple Triad by itself is better than most FF games.
7 never gripped me the same way, I think it is impinged upon by its legacy. I don't think it's aged as well.
Are you talking about FFIX or IV or XII or XIII or....
>FFXIII
>one of the best battle systems in FF history
strange, that was the one thing that kept me from finishing the game, I could put up with the utterly wank story, but not the combat, I just got fed up of playing it.
that said, I don't think its inherently terrible and I do see why people like it, but it was definitely a low point for me
it was a bit better in XIII-2 and the combat in LR:FFXIII is actually fucking great
Basically I don’t think PhS4 and CT Take way from 7 because while they also depict a technological setting, they did not use this technology to build a similar setting. And by using dystopian urban environments 7 did “tap into the future” in a way they did not.
Not to take away from either series (since AoA having palatial architecture was the right move for its placement in the story and setting, and the Algo system being a sci-fi medieval mix is exlained by the mostadvanced planet blowing up and setting everything back since 2)
I get your logic now. I enjoy FF8 for what it is, but I do find it to be a weaker entry overall. FF7 shows its age, but for me, just seeing a better translation elevates it heaps and makes it infinitely more enjoyable to experience again. I love a lot of the little things 8 did, and I do have a soft spot for it, but I don't think the overall package compares to 7's. It's just a bit flat in some parts. I don't know how much of it is due to translation, either.
I didn't like FF8, mostly because having a basic grasp on the junction system breaks the entire game
The problem with XIII's combat is that while it blossoms into a beast, it's too fucking slow at getting there. The story being as shit as it is always wears me down before I get to the meat of its gameplay, which is a shame.
Same can be said for Espers or Materia or weapons in IX or status effects in IV or sphere grid in X, etc. Pretty much any FF game has a way to break the gameplay.
Better translation? Which versions have that?
Those can break the game too but take longer or take more effort. 8 just takes an adult brain.
FFVI is even easier than FFVIII. You literally just equip the same 2-3 espers on everyone, grind for an hour, and everyone is an Ultima/Life 3 god. FFVIII, you have to at least find spells and equip them somewhat decently. And refining magic takes way more effort.
They split their team between Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy 9 in order to get both out fast before rumors of the upcoming PS2 caused people to stop buying PS games, cause no established backwards compatibility
6 is pretty easy. Especially with only some characters being worth using. This is what people usually criticize 6 for however so 8 is not being singled out
The Reunion fan translation helps a lot. It's not perfect but it's a lot smoother overall. The regular PC version has some minor improvements in the script compared to the OG PSX version, too.
>blitzball
>tetra master
>best minigames
That's not Chocobo hot and cold you double nigger.
>FFX
>sphere grid is constraining when the game in later portions essentially gives you spheres that let you jump to anywhere on the grid your allies have already activated
>don't mention the fantastic equipment customization
>don't mention the ability to select various different ways for your limit break meter to fill.
>features the most difficult ultimate weapon sidequests in FF history
Nah that's FFXII. Dodging lightning is bad but it's not a fucking invisible chest that most likely won't spawn and if it does it has a 1 in bazillion chance to actually have the weapon.
>FFXII
>the game's events are meaningless because, prior to the beginning of the game, the "bad guy" has already won, and nothing you do affects the future events he has set in motion.
What the fuck are you even talking about? Did you play the game while high or something?
>farm sleep early in the game
>bind it to the gunblade
Congratulations, you've beaten FFVIII. Was that rewarding?
FFX literally has the best overall plot of any FF game. Tidus can be annoying and Seymour's hair is stupid but plotwise I can't think of another FF game that measures up. It managed to make a game where the MC isn't real and is from a place that doesn't exist and still have it make total sense in the context of the world.
Everything makes perfect sense in ff8
>all from the same orphanage and just have amnesia
Card Mod utterly broke the junction system and made the game absolutely piss-easy.
It had some cool story concepts like GFs causing brain damage or whatever but the orphanage stuff was still 100% dumb as shit
Okay, I noticed Switch had some different lines too. Thank you
Uh
>Irvine seems to remember
>never mentions he doesnt want to shoot his surrogate mom in the face
I had no problem with the junction system but I felt Rinoa was a let down and was a step in the wrong direction.
It may not be funny, but it definitely is cool. Get it? Because he's dead, there's no blood flow.
Blitzball is too slow, desu. Matches feel like they take five million years unless you hide in the goal so that time continues to count down.
It's okay, but I couldn't imagine devoting as much time to it now as I did originally.
I know you're trolling but it chaps my ass that back in the day people actually did this and then decided it was flawed design
>game allows you to customize your characters
>provides early access to all kinds of junctionable magic in theoretically unlimited quantities
>level scaling means you literally never have to grind to make progress
>retards spammed gf's through the entire game and then complained about the unskippable animations
I'm just sitting here wanting more medieval. Give.me more jobs and classes. And medieval. Please. Please.please
and by more effort you mean more tedious grinding
>uh
prove it wrong bitch.
Yes, that is what I mean. A couple hours to get the refine option, than a few hours more of collecting and refining magic. Compared to FFVI where you can have the best skills on a full party in less than an hour.
>level scaling
>good
>ever
Worked fine in FFVIII and Chrono Cross. I got to level 100 in Final Fantasy VIII and still beat the final boss without any trouble. The idiots who purposefully limit themselves are just making the game more annoying, as they avoid actually playing the game. It would be like if you were playing Basketball and did nothing but wait for the shot clock to run out every time you got the ball. Sure, your opponent wouldn't get many points. But neither would you and the game would be boring as hell.
The lore implications behind Eden is spooky as fuck.
I hate ff8 because of the level scaling, not the junction system.
>using GF ever
I feel bad for the artists that did all the work for the summon animations
You made the claim
I didn’t. FF8’s summons were god-tier in design and animation. Kudos to those guys. I enjoyed watching them, even after repetition
>I feel bad for the artists that did all the work for the summon animations
Why? The majority of people just spammed summons until they got Aura. And even late game, Siren, Eden and Diablos are good.
What I feel bad for are the designers on Final Fantasy XII. They spent years designing these huge, beautiful cities. And people don't even stop to look at anything, because there's nothing to interact with in town outside of a couple NPCs and a shop keeper. So there's dozens of buildings and NPCs in each town people legitimately will never even notice. But someone spent tons of time making them.
Sometimes I feel like people weren't even awake while they played the game. Without Rinoa Squall never manages to survive time compression -- which should be fucking obvious.
>The only people who didn’t like FF8 were actual idiots who couldn’t figure out the junction system.
Except if you have a 3 digit IQ the junction system breaks the entire game in a matter of minutes. I literally played a few Triple Triad games and was able to 1-2 shot bosses afterwards all on Disc 1 while having more HP than anything else in existence. And it's not even like getting cards is hard, you have access to tier 8/9/10 cards right away, starting with MiniMog from that faggot running around the Garden.
Nah, I thought the story was retarded, hated Rinoa as a character, and thought how the junction system trivialized most of the magic was awful. Also, FUCK drawing as a mechanic. For GFs? Fine. For magic? Fuuuuuck that.
Without Rinoa, they would have written the story differently. Probably wouldn't even have time compression as a plot point at all. You do realize they could have added that in because they needed an excuse for Rinoa to do something, right?
Rinoa has no point in the main plot. She's literally just the leftovers of Laguna never getting together with Julia. Which that point would get across the same without having Rinoa. Laguna missed his chance and met a different woman. You don't need Rinoa to drive that point home, because half of Disk 2 already shows it.
All Rinoa ends up doing is being a motivation of love for a character who showed no desire for love. Squall had picked himself up and found self worth in Disk 2. He didn't want to follow Seifer into death and be forgotten. And he was growing to trust his teammates as friends. That's all the motivation he needed.
But instead, they (his teammates and the plot) start forcing Rinoa on him. Which isn't needed. And he shows nothing but annoyance and hate for it all through Disk 2. Then suddenly Disk 3 starts and he begins obsessing over Rinoa. Literally an hour before, he tried to smack her and called her a childish idiot for almost dying. But an hour later he's a blubbering pile of depression on the floor because she's unconscious? This is horrible writing. If they had shown actual character growth and involvement between the two before that, then it would be fine. But all you see is Squall being put into two arranged dates, which he shows no interest in Rinoa during that time. And then when a fucking major battle is going on, everyone is demanding he ignore his responsibilities and go put a ring on Rinoa. A ring THEY set up and Squall didn't even care about. This is dumber than your typical Shounen anime plot. No, its even worse than that. It's Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien level bad.
tl;dr Squall had all the motivation he needed and got over his own isolation before Rinoa.
It isn't bad per se, but it really is tedious in the beginning. It might open up later but I just couldn't get through the first 8 hours or so.
In my first playthrough I spammed GFs too. Glad I wasn't the only one. I didn't really understand what the junctioning even was. I just played through the game and enjoyed it.
Every time I see a FF8 thread I feel the urge to play it again. Fuck you, I'm already playing FF7 and 4.
Sounds like every MMO today
I liked Squall and the junction system but Rinoa is a filthy whore
Fuck you
Cool story bro, only problem is that Squall liked Rinoa from the moment he saw her. In case you hadn't noticed she was literally the only person throughout the game who got a rise out of him, they were having mini lover's quarrels almost immediately after he landed in Timber. I really can't agree with your assessment at all, especially because there's nothing to suggest Squall would go on to lead SeeD without her. During the battle of the garden they tell Squall to save Rinoa because she's one of them, it really has nothing to do with rings or romance.
You also mention a 1 off line about him and Seifer...but in your own words, without Rinoa, they would have written the story differently. The only reason Seifer 'dies' is because of Rinoa, he shows up to help the Owls like a retard. So how does Squall 'grow' without that? Even though your idea of him growing is literally a single moment in the game that really isn't that significant. It's not an accident that the reason Squall slowly comes out of his shell and grows to trust his teammates always returns to Rinoa, she's literally the focus of the game from the waves in the first cutscene to pic related.
>but Rinoa is a filthy whore
Why do people say this? Because she held hands with Seifer one summer? Seriously asking here, it was implied their relationship wasn't serious so why do autists here always act like it's some kind of NTR doujin.
it was an all around mediocre entry to the final fantasy series. it's prime contrarian bait, as evidenced by the pretentiousness of the Yea Forumsirgins in this thread who defend it.
Yeah, it does. Really sad. FFXIV has legitimately the most beautiful world and music I've seen in a FF game. And it's wasted in a game where people just rush through the content. If only they could use that world in a single player game (and have meaningful interaction with the world like in a DQ or Suikoden game).
>Why? The majority of people just spammed summons until they got Aura. And even late game, Siren, Eden and Diablos are good.
Are you kidding? Siren has the worst damage of all the GFs. Diablos is basically a stronger Demi. Eden's animation takes half an hour.
Anyone who was using GFs with any regularity was 100% a retard.
>Nah, I thought the story was retarded, hated Rinoa as a character, and thought how the junction system trivialized most of the magic was awful. Also, FUCK drawing as a mechanic. For GFs? Fine. For magic? Fuuuuuck that.
Like this user here. You never have to draw any magic and can get through the game perfectly fine, with lots of magic just from refinement. In fact the only spell you can't get via refinements is Scan I think.
>Cool story bro, only problem is that Squall liked Rinoa from the moment he saw her.
Stopped reading. Because he literally didn't. He told her to fuck off, then she pulled him out of the dance floor. He did some dancing, then the minute she left, he never thought about her until he saw her again 10 hours later. And his first reaction when seeing her again is "sigh, this brat again." And his view of her gets worse and worse for the next two disks, until he's literally trying to swat her away like a fly on their "dates."
But good attempt to try and rewrite things.
>Siren has the worst damage of all the GFs.
The point of Siren is not to do damage. It's to test the status vulnerability of enemies.
>Diablos is basically a stronger Demi.
Which is why he's good. There's some bosses you can kill in three hits by using Diablos.
>Eden's animation takes half an hour.
But does the most damage. And is pretty broken with boost.
My interest in FF8 plummets to near zero right after the Seed battle or right after the failed assassination attempt.
The game just slows to a crawl when you're just flying about with nothing to do. And that Laguna part is just one long extended cutscene into the past.
Sounds like my reaction to Disk 2 of FFVII and IX.
At least 7 and 9 had some kind of a plot point to move forwards. 8 just stops several times in the story with almost nothing to look forward to
Cute Aeris_
Good thing Classic WoW is coming soon
t. almost as deluded and insincere as early Squall
You could literally taste how assblasted Squall was after she just left him following the dance, maybe you're just projecting since you're falling back on Squall's repressed rewrite of what happened, but it's very clear when you're not retarded.
>Stopped reading.
I bet.
i fucking wish i didn't know how to break the shit out of that game, yeah, might be better
it's the FF2 of PS FF
Disk 2 of FFVII is a bunch of side quests disguised as mandatory plot. Big materia, fort condor, saving Tifa and Cloud, getting attacked by Jenova half a dozen times, Omega Weapon, etc. This is all filler. The only actual "plot" is Tifa helping Cloud out of his stupor and some exposition about Sephiroth and the ancients.
And most of Disk 2 of FFIX is just introducing Eiko. There's a good 10 hours of just playing with Eiko in her "house." It's the epitome of boring. Oh, and lots of scenes showing how Kuja is strong, but never explaining who or what he is (a lot like Sephiroth constantly appearing and then leaving in FFVII).
FFVIII Disk 2 actually has the bulk of character development for Squall, Irvine and Selphie. And sets up a lot of stuff. Still not as interesting as Disk 1, but way better than Disk 3 and 4.
>You could literally taste how assblasted Squall was after she just left him following the dance
Apparently showing a confused face and then shrugging and forgetting the entire incident is being "assblasted" now.
FF III is secretly the best
>And his view of her gets worse and worse for the next two disks, until he's literally trying to swat her away like a fly on their "dates."
Squall tries to make a move a few times and fails. Is this perhaps what you mean by swatting?
As long as it has Refia
I would say it's legitimately my favorite of the main games. Turns out when you focus on gameplay over story, it actually turns out good. And one of the few things Final Fantasy does well is the class system.
Are you seriously thinking he's trying to make a move on her? He's making a frustrated gesture because she's mocking him. He's basically telling her to shut up and go away that entire date.
>that immediate I'm out of here once he misses
C'mon user, don't be retarded.
Class system wasn't all that great. It was Ninja, Sage, and some other useless fuckers. At least they tried, though.
>this entire debate
Squall is just that edgy mysterious kid that tries to act aloof towards her but secretly builds up compassion for her over time. Aka it never works irl but it's fiction logic of course it works in here.
Yeah, you are retarded. If you'd ever seen even a basic romance anime, you'd recognize all these recycled tropes and gestures. He doesn't like Rinoa at all in Disk 1 or 2. Then magically Disk 3 starts, and he suddenly is obsessed with her. This is why the love story is bad.
I played the DS remake and it was great. Only flaw was the rediculous requirements to get Onion Knight. But Ninja, Black Belt, Devout and Magus were plenty strong for the final area. Though the final area was just a huge endurance run and the only bad part of the game.
>Apparently showing a confused face and then shrugging and forgetting the entire incident is being "assblasted" now.
>that laughter when Rinoa hugs him
>that loaded question about the party
>that pouting when she mentions Seifer
Yeah user you're totally right and not at all a retard.
Dunno what else to say to you, of course the game doesn't make sense when you misunderstand it. It's like complaining you don't get calculus after learning arithmetic all wrong.
Oh, I figured since it was a mainline discussion we were talking about the original games. Yeah, balance is a bit better in the remake. At the very least it's worth leveling as a Black Belt for a while for the hp boost before switching to Ninja (assuming you're not just doing item glitches). The NES version was horribly balanced.
No, no, no. Without Rinoa the whole romantic undercurrent of the story is gone. Squall is Laguna's son by Riane, and Rinoa is Julia's daughter. I can't believe people didn't catch this, but Squall and Rinoa are essentially following through on the love that Laguna and Julia had for one another, but were unable to consummate. FFVIII is one of my favorite romances for this reason.
what mod?
Being able to abuse junctioning and breaking the game is actually what made me end up really liking FF8. Kind of similar to FF2 where learning stuff like turbo leveling evasion and other easily exploitable parts of the game were the most fun. In FF8s case though it wasn't a total fucking slog to get through.
Man, I forgot how fucking kino Fisherman's Horizon was

>no, you don't get it, instead of spending 5 hours drawing magic, you're suposed to be spend 5 hours playing cards and transforming them into magic
Oh, yeah, sorry, I guess that's much better gameplay then.
In reality it takes like 15 minutes of TT to get the best cards in the game which refine for hundreds of rare items which refine for thousands of magic, but keep being a spastic user. Also, Triple Triad is fun as fuck, so yeah, it is better gameplay.
op is a faggot
who knew
>Apparently showing a confused face and then shrugging and forgetting the entire incident is being "assblasted" now.
Providing examples from hours later doesn't prove that wrong. After the dance, Squall just leaves and shows no signs of caring about her at all.
>that laughter when Rinoa hugs him
Laughter? His model is just standing up and saying "take it easy." There's no sign of laughter. Maybe because you made the game go at 4x speed you think it looks like laughter.
>that loaded question about the party
That's not a loaded question. There's no innuendo or probing at all. He's just assuming that's why she was at the party. This is simple exposition.
>that pouting when she mentions Seifer
Which he did since the beginning of Disk 1. It has nothing to do with Rinoa. Especially since he starts pouting before she ever tells him she knows or likes Seifer.
You really sound like you're adding context that isn't there. Which is understandable since the games limited details allows for that. Same thing a lot of people did with FFVII, coming up with wild theories about a simple hand movement or head bob. Which, once the FFVII Remake comes out, those theories will be destroyed and you'll have a LOT of angry fans who's childhood fanfics and mental gymnastics are ruined.
How retarded do you have to be to think Rinoa was an after thought when she's so obviously central to the story and connected to everything like
explain. The fact the main cast are all fated to meet should really bring home how retarded this is, Seifer and Squall are setup as rivals precisely because of Rinoa, who is setup as an analog for Laguna and Julia, and they're all necessary to fulfill the story.
first half of the game shit on magic/just use it as stat as you blast everything with summons, second half blast everything with aura limits.
What a dumbfuck game "hurr if you use magic your stats get lower lololol"
>Laughter? His model is just standing up and saying "take it easy." There's no sign of laughter. Maybe because you made the game go at 4x speed you think it looks like laughter.
It's not sped up, and Squall clearly laughs after the hug. It's basically the equivalent of him realizing she has a boyfriend.

If you want another source.
>That's not a loaded question. There's no innuendo or probing at all. He's just assuming that's why she was at the party. This is simple exposition.
Yeah all those ellipsis and that delay as he puts his hand on his hip, surely not loaded. FUCK. Why am I trying to explain human interaction to an autist.
>No, no, no. Without Rinoa the whole romantic undercurrent of the story is gone.
And as I stated in other posts, the love story is weak.
>Squall is Laguna's son by Riane, and Rinoa is Julia's daughter. I can't believe people didn't catch this
But I already pointed this out in an earlier post.
>Squall and Rinoa are essentially following through on the love that Laguna and Julia had for one another, but were unable to consummate. FFVIII is one of my favorite romances for this reason.
And while the sentiment is nice, it isn't executed well. Because Laguna eventually found more happiness with another woman. So fulfilling his missed love (which was literally a crush, not a relationship) is not impacting.
A game like Dragon Quest VIII did this concept much better. Both because it is central to the plot and because there's actual consequences and impact to the people who couldn't be together. And it spans three generations with two different unrequited relationships.
>Squall is just that edgy mysterious kid that tries to act aloof towards her but secretly builds up compassion for her over time. Aka it never works irl
... worked for me shy edgy teen and my first gf basically had to force herself on me.
See and then read The team in Final Fantasy just really sucks at making the love story weave into the main plot. It's always a tangent. FFX has the same problem. Yes, 80% of the game focuses on Yuna. But at the end, the "love" story doesn't have any weight. Turns out Yu Yevon wanted to die and Yuna's only point is to cast a few aeons on him to weaken him while Jecht and Tidus finish him off. The love plot has no impact on the story. Only symbolism for bringing Tidus into reality in the final move.
Same issue in FFVIII. All the love plot going on is ultimately meaningless to the main plot of fighting the sorceress and SeeD. It's only meaning is to have symbolism of Squall coming back through time compression and a nice ending FMV video where they kiss. But that symbolism is meaningless when the development between Squall and Rinoa is done so poorly in the whole game before.
Sure it did. How's life treating you Sasuke?
I have mixed feelings about FF8. It was both better than I was expecting but also just as bad as people say it is. If there was ever a game that needed a remake FF8 would be it.
