Tales of Abyss's party pisses me off because they constantly gave Luke shit for not trusting them when they were telling him Van wasn't to be trusted. Some aspects of the 2003 anime are better. The beginning of the series is more fleshed out, while Brotherhood glosses over it way too quickly — and yes, I realize that this was done intentionally because they didn't want to repeat a bunch of shit, but it still makes Brotherhood the worse way to watch the content taking place before the two versions of the story diverged. Brotherhood is basically meant to be watched after the original anime, so for the sake of informing someone who hasn't seen either anime and wants to watch only one of them, Brotherhood needs to lose points for that. As far as the actual story differences go, the 2003 anime gets pretty random at the end, but at least it's more interesting than Brotherhood's "let's just try punching the bad guy really hard for the 100th time, oh yay it worked, the end". The homunculi in the 2003 anime also seem a bit more threatening because there's always some obscure trick to killing them and you never see Mustang just win with zero effort by spamming hadoken.
