I like it when being gay offers something to the story that you wouldn't get the same mileage out of otherwise. I don't think characters should be straight by default, but I think that if their sexuality doesn't play into their characterization somehow then it should just be left alone even if they're hypothetically straight, it takes away from other things.
So like, you don't have to be a cock guzzler but even if it's just a part of the backstory and never plays into the running story, I want to know that "this character is gay and had a lover in the past he met in the military that predominantly contains men, he left the military because his lover died at war". It characterizes the setting, I understand why they had to be a homosexual since an opposite sex lover would've painted a different impression of the lover, and why he needed a lover at all since it'd establish his experience and gives me a reason why he's not there any more. You could replace it with a lot of things but it's consistent.
