Resurrection is costly because it requires expensive physical components actually diamons, and also a sufficiently high level cleric so not every bumfuck village priest can service you. Can also only resurrect you if you died of unnatural means, old age means you're fucked, desecration means you're fucked, getting your soul fucked means you're fucked etc.

Really don't get the hate for EE. It's literally the same game, but with some life improvements.

In *actual* DnD resurrection magic was somewhat rare and costly. Imagine having to acquire 50,000 hamburgers (or 500,000 for an elf) to revive someone every time they died. And this is in hamburgers alone, if you had to pay a specialist then it cost a bit more and most smaller villages won't have one handy. And they came back weaker, permanently, for it. This is also assuming you had all the parts together -- a chopped off head, for example, made revival a bit trickier. A poisoned body needs to be cleared of poisons before rezzing. Lots of other little boxes to check.

IIRC the game has 7 chapters. You go to the Spellhold at chapter 3 and can go back to the city at the start of chapter 7. And there are no recruitable companions during this time. Though this can be shorter if you skip some side quesses

Also Anomen's quest was one of the easiest/shortest and he is a very strong NPC, keep that in mind if you play it again

It's written in the game in the way that the best option is for him to accept being a cuck. If you make him send his wife into prison, it fucks him up and he can't be himself anymore. Meanwhile, if you let him be a cuck, everything's fine, his relationship with his wife gets back on track and he leaves a happy man.

If it was written in a way that makes the right choice for him to not be a cuck, but he'd leave the party for other reasons, like taking care of his children now that they have no mother around, the quest would've been much better.

Aerie is for all intents and purposes a "tribal" flying elf. It makes sense for her to have a shitton of braids, hair accessories and tattoos. And Jaheira and Mazzy like their hair practical, so braids it is.
Nalia was supposed to be a substitiute for Imoen - hence the same looks and class. Imoen was supposed to die in Chateau Irenicus and Nalia was supposed to take over. Yet Bioware was scared shitless of the fan backlash - Imoen was REALLY popular back then, so they expanded her story role. And Nalia stayed as this weird not-Imoen.

IIRC Keldorn says that guy is an honorable noble so I trusted him but you might be right. Still, you can convince him to leave and then make Keldorn stay with his family if you want

It's a shame how they made Yoshimo the replacement character gameplaywise for Imoen until you get to pick up Imoen again. It completely ruined the thief balance of the game. Once you knew he'd be getting off mid-game, it left only two choices for competent thieves to go around for the rest of the game & ToB. Jan or you. It's annoying to either have to take Jan with you in every single playthrough, make yourself at least a dual-class or a multiclass thief, or try to (and fail to) deal with having only Nalia or Imoen fail at every trap there is.

Baldur's Gate 3 better be turn based.

Jaheira is a very versatile character. A frontline fighter with healing and mage busting spells like creeping doom. Ironskins to enhance her melee durability, excellent AC (I had her at -17 and Viccy at -18 once)

Imoen has excellent trap finding abilities though. That's why you bring her along in BG1, because all the other thieves available have shit Find Traps.

you dont get bonuses from int, only dex. you level into to 7 so you dont get 1 shot by mind flayers and max out combqat abilities

She definately is. I think this whole "traced celebrity portraits" thing reached critical mass in NWN - you had portraits based off of Robert De Niro, Catherina Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie, Leonard Nimoy and Jane Seymour. They actually had to change them unless in fear of lawsuit.

In BG1, yes. Imoen is excellent for traps & locks. Besides, in BG 1 thief is the most common class you'll find among the NPCs and you can level them up yourself so any thief you find early will be just as good as you make them.

In BG2, not so much. Imoen has somewhat decent trapping and lockpicking abilities which work great in the tutorial dungeon, but fall quickly behind once you meet her again. If you want to make use of them, you have to get lots of thieving potions when her skills just aren't up to par.

I don't know about you, but I was happy to have something to use up all the potions of master thievery I had overflowing out of my inventory on.

I find it hard not to keep her around. She has so much more content than all the other characters and she leaves permanently after you've done her sidequest. I can't bring myself to ditch her from a roleplaying perspective.

Guards start to attack you on sight if your reputation drops too low, good companions will also whine a lot and eventually leave

The thing is, you can do that, but you have to think outside the box to be able to do it.
Just order your character to attack Haer'Dalis. Then don't stop when his life starts getting dangerously low.
When he dies, kick him off the group. With him dead, event chain that'll lead to him stealing you're waifu can't progress.
If you're forced into a him or me ultimatum, you either end the romance with Aerie or she'll quit the party.

How I see it:
BG is the middle ground of an RPG.
IWD is mostly combat driven RPG.
PT:T is mostly story driven RPG.

Combat driven RPGs are usually called hack&slash or aRPG is you're generous and "true" fans of RPGs consider them something lesser, something worse, something almost foul.

I'm not aware of any recent revisions to the mod but from what I can remember, all the evil rapey dialogue options that the author included for some reason end poorly for your character. When IWD is good, it's really really good. The voice acting, when it's there, is great. Sadly, there's very little of it. Also, if you enjoy tactical combat on infinity engine, it beats BG hands down. But, as a role playing game, it fails hard. Since you make all the characters yourself, they have no personality to them. You could just as well be commanding chess pieces in their stead.

Same with IWD2. It's like IWD, but in 3rd edition and more ease of use options. It was a pain to toggle between sword & board and a bow in any game that was released before IWD2. Additionally, all the little things you could do with different races & classes give your characters at least something that can be roughly described as flavor. It was fun for the sorceress to give a few pointers to a young npc sorceress, or the evil priest to bitchslap a ghost into doing her bidding. But as far as flavor between party members goes, BG2 does this way better with NPC party members who have personalized banz between themselves and the MC. And the bantz aren't even basted on classes & races, but with the written personality of each character.

As such, after you know the game, IWD & IWD2 handle memeruns like the one screenshot in the post you replied to way better, when a similar memerun would ruin the good parts of BG & BG2.

There is a way to do it and ultimately win Aerie for yourself. I can't remember which guide I read it in, but you basically have to say that you love her but refuse to fight Haer'Dalis. He gets full of himself and tries to be more forceful with her and she'll dump him on the spot and commit to you.

desu, I began played these series with Baldur Gate 2, a lot of plot holes and references were unknown to me but after beating Throne of Bhaal and experiencing being a super power monster house, I couldn't play being a Level 1 character.

Arguably the only good thing about EE is the group looting. If you don't want to support a needless remaster from a company that has never had their own IP search for a torrent of the old GoG complete editions of the 2 games. The only mods you need are BGT(lets you play the 2 games and ToB expansion as one game), the widescreen mod, fix pack and unfinished business. After your first playthrough you should also look into Sword Coast Stratagems for a really good challenge mod.

You level up to get more spell uses. The first few levels in BG can be hell for a lot of set up. I'd recommend dropping one of the two pairs for more experience per character. What's your PC?

Spellcasters are gamebreaking after they get some more casts. You'll likely be resting a fair amount due to the nature of the system, though I've had people tell me some self imposed rules on resting made it better.

Mages have inverse xp level gaps, meaning they level slow at low levels, but fast at high levels.
Spell chat can get insane in 2 because of time stop, sequencers, contingencies etc.

You can grind out a level or two with just Imoen if you want then grab one of the two starting pairs if you like them for a 4 man party. Go up to 5 or 6 when another body would be more helpful than whatever extra xp you'll get from a smaller party.

with a bit of game knowledge you can get level 6 in under an hour solo as just about any class, then pick up whoever you want and level them up how you want (assuming you're using tweaks anthology or another tweak pack that allows you to level them up instead of recieving pre-leveled garbage)

Someone posted a really good post mortem with Sawyer on it in an IE thread a while back and it was actually an interesting video. They had way bigger ambitions with that game but had to scale back.

You'd have to have shit taste to enjoy PoE and not BG. Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.
