Yes, it's decent, it's not exactly like SF, but it's still a traditional grounded and slow paced fighting game with short combo and no airdash.
Most interesting thing right now is that you have free EX moves at the start of the round and using them will put a cooldown on the dedicated skill, so you won't be able to use your special move for a short time. Basically, if you use your ex shoryu, you won't be able to use any reversal to help you against an upcoming pressing. So the way you and your opponent will use your EX moves will bring different situations. Another interesting thing is that there is no real comeback mechanic, if you have the lead during the whole round, you will have your super before him and even if you take a SSA, you will still have a large advantage against him since using a super put a cooldown on all your skills.

It is too shallow right now, but it also has a decent base to start off.
The most obvious shallow aspect is are the combos. And before someone butts in saying it isn't a combo game, making it so you can't link standing normals to any other normals but the autocombo just really kills any possibilities. It is bellow basic right now, when I want it at basic but with some interesting quirks.
The rest is functional but needs tuning. Everyone wants move speed increased so they can space and bait stuff better. Pressure can get quite strong, so more pushback would be good or a less risky defensive option. Just defend is pretty pointless currently as it only builds more meter, when you already build so much and only have one use for it. EXs being on cooldown is interesting in concept, but it means basic stuff like ex projectile in neutral end zoning rather than being part of your zoning game. There are a lot of adjustments that would make the game more interesting.

The diversity seems okay, I don't feel like anyone fills the same role and you can play them in different ways.

You really don't need to do that. For the beginner ticket, you are bound to hit some holiday event/extended fest that allows you to maximize the effect of that. As for the free draw you get at start, I believe that one is actually rigged anyway (guaranteed one SSR out of a decent pool).

YES, you can start GBF if you just want to enjoy the story, side stories and the new events each month.
You don't need to grind to go through them (a little grind is needed for the Story mode at some point like any JRPG), the whole grindfest start when you want to do big damage to kill the HL Raid bosses to obtain new materials and weapons to be stronger and stronger like any MMORPG.
Best time to start is during the Roulette (Christmas/Anniversary) to obtain a lot of new free characters, also keep your crystals and tickets to be able to do 300 rolls, it's called a spark and at the end of your 300 rolls on the same banner, you will be able to pick the character you want from it.

A really weird or different looking character design, basically nothing that resembles humanoid/catgirl/elf/dwarf which is what the majority of the characters look like. Armored/mask isn't all that great either, something with like an entirely different body shape or species. Kind of the reason wasn't really interested in Melty Blood either.

He isn't much like Chipp aside from being fast and being able to jump off walls, even with those things in mind his wall jump is very different from Chipp's. He has a sort of teleport as well, but it doesn't seem as integral to him as Chipp's multiple teleports are to him.
I figured out why the beta characters feel samey to me. 3 out of 5 beta characters are water element and even though Ferry is light, her sfx is very blue-ish unlike other light characters. The other two remaining characters are dirt. I hope they bring more Fire, Dark and Wind characters for more variety.
I genuinely do like the clashes a lot. It's even better that it doesn't have danger time where as a Slayer main my brain instantly melts as soon as it happens and go for pile bunker immediately hoping for once they're dumb enough to get hit by it.

The only balance I can think of is if the Yugu SSA can only be activated if you pull a summon stone or SSR crystal of sorts making it RNG.
If Lowain is the "random item character" I can see that being a thing but considering his stance at the start while summoning it may be activation by counter.
When he pulls out the food in the trailer he gets lines on him, assuming the green ones meaning he got healed.
And the Katalina really seems like one of those wack random chance item things to me, while I know he is the wacky character so wacky expressions are to be expected even he seemed surprised by it possibly denoting rare chance thing.
