Idk maybe its because I was born right after MtG more or less started but the standard western fantasy art since the 70s-80s has always been meh for some reason.
Even the core rulebooks of most tabletop games seem incredibly generic and stamped out from one to another which is fine I guess, leaves more to the DM to create but shit at least numenera tries to be unique in it's setting and tone

I just spent the last 10 minutes comparing and contrasting the these two box arts that you show here, and here I have to say that that OG box art for FFXV is a confused mess compared to the western version, the only positives of the original being the title and the conveyance of how close the group is to eachother. Wherein, the western's title is bland and the groups relationship is more vague.

Now where the Western shines is in it's lighting and reflection, which is fantastic. All of it falls naturally onto it's characters and environment as you'd expect it to, and what I really love is that it even holds true to the dark projected beings in the clouds, like I said, the lighting people knew what they were doing. Also, I just enjoy it atmospherically, taking place in the evening and allowing it to convey that the dark times are only begging; especially with, again, those dark beings cast with clouds, coming over the horizon.

Now with the japanese, it's... just bad. I mean, what the hell was this artist trying to convey? On the ground it looks like it's mid-late after-noon, with some shadows looking like they're showing the wrong time of day, and another just being outright cast at the wrong angle. The reflections in the car's surface being warped and wrong. and the bright fluffy white clouds catching sunlight from the wrong side entirely. AND THEN THERE'S THE SKY! All of what I just mention before up against a clear, starry night sky with an absolutely massive moon. now I don't care much for the size of the moon in this because, you know... Final 'FANTASY', so they can do what they want in that regard. but nearly everything else is just.. not good.

So ultimately when it comes to these 2 box arts I have to give it to the west for their attention to detail and concept, though I really do wish that they kept the title styling that is one japan's, that would have made it too easy to point out which is better. In the end, I think your opinion is trash.

That's just a hold over from the "father of manga" being really into disney and using disney eyes on all his character designs. What I don't get is the consistent use of skin tones as white as ivory, blond hair and blue eyes on people meant to be from japan. Like I get wanting to vary it up because animation is limitless and a class full of black haired, black eyed people might be a little boring to look at, but goddamn do anime characters look so white that when they meet a white person there is like no difference feature wise.

Another thing that supports my point is that there are examples of video games that strip away everything besides gameplay and are still extremely successful (Dwarf Fortress), and there's examples of anime that are extremely mediocre or obnoxious in everything except visuals and animation and have become classics (like FLCL)

Depends on how the art is applied. In 2d games raw quality matters, the more detail the better aka Odin Sphere. In 3d though there is a perpetual dice roll due how well the 2d-3d transition is enacted aka the Xenosaga trilogy. The major problem with anime artstyle is not with the art itself but the devs intentions to possibly use it's presentation as a major crutch for sub-par gameplay. Too many anime style games have utilized this trick and it often does more harm than good. Simply because some games can get written off due to artstyle and the presentation of it.

For instance Omega Labyrinth looks appealing art wise and I want to support the game to fight censorship. However upon further inspection the actual gameplay is a low poly basic bitch mystery dungeon style game. This isn't inherently bad since the pokemon mystery dungeon games are good. But the last game I played that was presented in a similar manner albeit different devs was Trillion:God of Destruction which stopped being fun a few hours in. It also doesn't help Omega Labyrinth's foundation comes from the Vita era of small dev copy cat games.

TLDR: Anime artstyle isn't the problem devs who use it as a crutch for shit gameplay is the problem. And sadly the weebs buy it.
