I'm a contractor at NASA and people aggrandize it to be the best shit ever, but honestly, it's been pretty disappointing the last 5 years here.

There's some really talented people there, but there's also 5x as many people who are strictly there for bureaucratic positions holding prestigious positions/titles if only because they knew a person or have been there for 30 years despite being mostly a fucking idiot.

I can't tell you how many times we've needed to explain to one civil servant that's 60 or so how and why the webserver team (which I'm in) can do absolutely fuckall to restore an outlook e-mail he accidentally deleted.

Also, consider the garbage fire that it is to effectively have no work no pay every time there's a fucking government shutdown, having to deal with shoestring budgets and no-raises, generally getting paid (~40%) less than you would for a similar job with similar skillset in the private sector/corporate market.

I'd leave, but I'm 5 minutes away from Johnson Space Center, and 90% of the businesses in the area actually are there BECAUSE they have a contract with JSC, and moving to downtown Houston for a corporate job would fuck me up because I can't afford it with the garbage pay I get. And fuck not-moving either, because driving into traffic and out for over an hour each way on a daily basis would make me go insane.
