DMC5 has a shitty ending, some lackluster tracks, and it completely diminished Vergil. But like others have said, it's still the best DMC as a package. DMC3 is still better narratively and somewhat stylistically

Fantastic combat, good music, a plot that will seem weird if you're new to the series, and level design that is mostly a critical path but has its secrets. The visual diversity in levels is going to die out in the last third, but you'll be playing as Dante more by then to make up for it. If you don't like Nero or V for some reason, at least get to Mission 10 to play as him.

I don't normally buy games I'm unsure about unless they're over 50% off. I love the DMC series, even if I've only played 3 and up. I did fully S-rank 4SE on all difficulties with all characters.

When I was still a scrub at the game, I loved Nero because it was easy to S-rank with him by spamming Charged Shots and Ex-Drive skills. Now he's kind of boring compared to Dante and Vergil. Not having multiple melee weapons really hampers the fun you can have. Does V keep him as he was. I know the arm offers some new mechanics, and I spoiled the game so I know Buster isn't available until the end.

You should be happy it was the Force Awakens honestly. All it had to be was not DMC2/DMC and it least comparable to DMC4, and that's what you got. You easily could have got some fucking garbage nightmare game.

Nero feels like a complete character because of the Devil Breakers. They kept in his 4 moveset, gave Red Queen more moves, and then gave him Breakers on top of that. The variation in your loadout gives you a similar feeling to having a Dante loadout in 3, with a different kind of limitation (they're destructable and you can run out, but you can upgrade to hold 8 at a time). They only have 1-4 moves each but the variety between them and how they interact with his main moveset works really well; in the Deluxe Edition you'll have 12 to play with, and you can Download Monkey Business for free (although it's basically the same thing as Helter Skelter). Also one of the Breakers is just Buster, and you get it about 30% in.

Once you beat the game nero gets like three more mechanics. Some variants on his 4 stuff and some completely new stuff that makes him feel even more complete.

You can not like Lady, since she's very straightforward in her "Gunslinger but a character" thing, but Trish is the most fun character in 4SE by a mile. Her playstyle built around lingering hitboxes that allow her long-startup attacks to land is intuitive and fun to execute, while her basic moveset is an expanded version of her 2 self, which is in itself a reference to 1 Dante's moveset (her hand-to-hand attacks are straight from Ifrit in their animations). Dante has his worst lineup of weapons outside of 2 and does shit for damage if you don't abuse bugs, Nero feels like 70% of a character in 4, and Vergil is Vergil but with weird unneeded changes and no Nelo DT.

So Charge Shot is still spammable and gives a bunch of Style points? To be honest, I'd be kinda sad if it didn't despite it being so cheap. I also got pretty good at insta-revving, so if all that's in place, I'm goochie.

Dante looks even more freakishly complicated. I tried to refrain from clawing too much, but it seems even more required now.

Charge Shot is locked behind beating the game the first time, which I guess is their attempt to balance it; you just upgrade the damage and hitstun of your stock of bullets (you have a UI element for it; you hold it to reload but you don't have to use them all at once, although Charge Shot works like in 4). MAX Act has the same window but regular revs have a slightly larger window and there's a new "half-rev" window that's quite large, and if you get within that window twice in a row you get one cylinder.

Dante is more complex in terms of weapons available to him by the end and he gets a new mechanic, plus his styles got a few more moves, but he also gets something that makes 4's TRICK-SWORD-TRICK-SWORD-TRICK-SWORD hotswapping less necessary. I don't claw at all and I can do cool shit.

I agree that Lady and Trish are the weakest. Like I appreciate the concept of a gun-focused character. The devs likely knew she felt boring compared to the rest but stuck with it anyways, and it was a novel approach.

As for Trish, she's the most challenging but NOT the most fun. I appreciate that she was a shout out to Dante 1, but her inability to build style quickly outside of large mobs, low damage (outside of a few combo finishers), and ineffectiveness against bosses and Blitz (sans Pandora spam) are all major weak points to me. Yes, the CC makes it easier to set some of that up, but 1-on-1, she's a stunted character.

Good to know. Locking Charge Shot is smart. Still finishing up some missions for Lady and Trish before I download 5. I remember dropping the game years ago before completing it with everyone and don't wanna have that same lingering regret.

But DMC has always been about style

You can play a level start to finish without loading, but there's a load screen for loading a level, there's a load screen for opening the shop, there's a load screen for changing equipment, etc. And they're all long.

Levels are seamless, but loading each Mission takes a decent amount of time, and you get two for each since it loads the cutscene and then the Mission proper. You have to go through this each time you restart a Mission (which is often if you're dying and don't want a bad Mission Rank).

It's a great game. Op is a niggerfaggot.

Being forced to use roundtrip and killer bee is not fun. Having a third of your moves be locked behind roundtrip being active or not also isn't fun. Trish could easily have used weapon switching but they sacrificed depth to make her play different from Dante. You know like a certain reboot did.

Lady has the opposite problem where weapon switching just makes the character worse when she could have easily had each gun assigned to a button or move.

Unlocking Devil Bringer and Devil Knuckle is what brings Nero to the next level in this game. I felt that in 4 he was missing that special something, and I feel that Itsuno and the team really managed to complete his design perfectly. Fun game if you know what to expect from the Devil May Cry brand at this point. If you're looking for stylish action combat with one of the most fun combat systems on the market you're gonna enjoy it, the story and generic level design kind of hurt the game though. Nero is an unironically good character, though. I remember the backlash back when he was announced, and I'm glad they stuck with him. Dante is a lot like Jack Sparrow in the Pirates movies. He functions better as a side character whose history and connection help drive the more relatable main protagonists forward. I also like that playing as him is treated as a reward for grasping the basics with Nero beforehand. Having all four styles at the start is daunting for new players, and it would only be remedied by making them unlocks or hiding them behind story progression which people would undoubtedly be pissy over.

It's not, it's really fucking not. You can try and make an argument DMC3 is a better "experience" on easy, but if you replay the game on higher difficulties you will clearly see how poorly balanced and thought out the enemy design, the counter design, the DT design, and the DMD design is. DMC5 has none of these issues and has the best enemy roster since the first game. That lone puts it above DMC3, not to mention having objectively superior gameplay.

Both 3 and 5 suffer from having too many Missions in one tower, but 5 at least varies the color palette more often. In addition, 5 has more levels outside of its central tower, and they're more interesting than DMC3's first three Missions (especially since M1&2 are one room apiece). 5 has a lot of level variety through M12, and then the final 8 are pretty samey.

I meant that the Qliphoth specifically changes the palette up a couple of times. The deep blues of the Prologue, the red of the entrance, the yellows of M13-16, the ice section before King Cerb, the fruit room that replicates their family home before shattering, and the white at the top for M18-20.

The colors in the city are way too muted, but they also have more interesting level design than most of the Qliphoth. I really love M7 from start to finish.

I love his playstyle but they should have given him more moves or more summons. I was bummed when defeating Nidhogg or Geryon didn’t add them to the party. That isn't remotely what happened. Losing his mother and feeling abandoned hurt him. It made him feel helpless and he never wished to feel helpless ever again. He went on his whole life looking to remedy that and the events that path took him shaped him.

Him contemplating his fate and Dante's is him wondering if it was his nature that made him who he was or his circumstances. It's not a clear answer, but the fact that he ruminates on it shows that he was now thinking about something more than his pursuits.

Probably the worst thing was how disappointing in the story and dialogue department it was. A big wasted opportunity I feel was not having Mundus return and trying to get the fruit for revenge. Vergil could have still returned also, but have him getting his body back due to Mundus and trying to break his mind control. I dunno, they just really played it really safe in a lot of areas and we probably won't even get a DMC6, so at least we got something I guess.

Well, the game is exactly what the fans wanted. They wanted graphics, they wanted Vergil, they wanted it to play like 4 but with more, they wanted fanfiction levels of references to other DMC things, they wanted more of the same but more of it and just so that no one felt left out they added DmC to it for good measure. This is what you get when you give the fans what they want rather than try to make something you think is good on its own merit.

I can't say that giving the fans what they want is always a bad idea but when they demand too much it can make a mess of things and sometimes giving people something new is the way to go.
