minecraft was just one of many games he made
he did a "shotgun" approach, make a lot of small indie games but unique enough to be interesting and see if the market likes it. once he found out that minecraft had potential he focused on just improving that game(great methodology for any game dev out there btw)
for minecraft, if i remember correctly, he took inspirations from dwarf fortress and infiniminer
