They still release a new mech pack every month or so for $20. If you want to do free to play it takes a ton of game play to purchase a single mech and then the same amount of time to refit it with useful weapons.

Not him and haven't played the game that much, but it's way better than WoT/WoWS I feel.
Doing the academy/tutorial tasks and then playing 25 matches during which you get bonus income will give you enough currency to buy pretty much any one, maybe two, mechs you like. Got my two favourites after only a couple hours of gameplay.
Mechs also aren't locked to lines or nations, so you can buy whatever you want from the very beginning.

Try the original Gundam, while the animation is dated as all hell it's still one of the best series in the genre overall.
Was always niche in the west and the Japs are more interested in shitty waifus than giant robots beating the shit out of eachother now. Doesn't help the only western mech franchise that got any real traction is under the thumb of Piranha Games. Shame Heavy Gear is super kill.

It's pretty fucking grindy, but the gameplay can be as intense and fun or boring as you want it to be. I'm one of like 100 people on the planet who actually thinks its fun, but I can't recommend it when it could be dead before 2020. Don't spend money on it if you play it, there's a good chance you're gonna waste it.
