Decided to start with Battle Network 1, and while the combat is fun, the Net being a fucking maze and littered with random encounters you can't reliably escape from is testing my patience.

It can't be helped, they were practically experimenting with 1. If you downloaded OSS with an english patch instead it's better with the QoL they added like a map on the bottom screen.

Yeah, by nature of being an autist that has to play games in chronological order, I do expect jank in the earlier titles. I'll be able to push through it.

Is it safe to say that Network Transmission is a very underrated game? It is easily one of my favorite games ever, yesterday I managed to fix my modded Wii and almost beat it in one stitting, today I finished it at Lv100 with Bass fought, but decided not to get 100% chips. I've actually thought how viable would it be to 100% speedrun it, because every speedrunner I've watched always goes for Any% with dead Zero.

1 is weird and has a lot of 'first-game' syndrome. Try it out first and if you don't like it then there's no shame to moving to 2.
2 makes everything better and you're guaranteed to have a better time with it than with 1.
If you like 2 or for some reason you grow agitated with it the FreezeMan scenario then move on to 3 Blue which is mostly considered the best game in the series.
If all goes well and you want more, then move on to 4 - 6.
4 is a bit of a shit show in a lot of ways but try to at least play through it once. 5 is better than 4 and 6 is either the best or the third best game after 3 and 2 depending on who you ask.

The threads made me install the BN games in my 3DS. I'm already done with BN1 and Network Transmission so now I'm starting BN2. Somehow it feels like I have less resources than in the first one. Imagine Battle Network with less story.
Now, you get to play as like 20 different Navis.

4.5 was made as a test for playing as Navis other than Megaman. It was also designed around the Battle Chip Gate for Real-Time Operation Battles, which were a side feature in 3 and 4. You didn't control the Navi directly, just gave them orders and fed them chips through an accessory that plugged into the GBA. The idea was to have a game where the player could fully put them-self in the shoes of a NetOp in the Battle Network universe.
There was no overarching plot (at least as far as I know.) It was just you, your navi (there was a large selection available,) and the internet. You could wander around the internet and participate in tournaments, with things happening in real-time.
