It has a divided pool of 512mb just like the 360 but unlike the 360 is not unified. 256mb of exotic fast XDR RAM and 256mb of uh DDR3. It's been a long time don't quote me on it. As I recall the PS3 really only had 256MB GDDR3 available for games to use, the XDR 256MB were system only. The Xbox had 512MB unified.

I would be surprised if devs used the main memory for rendering as the latency between GPU and XDR would be atrocious.

The PS3 architecture was definitely one of a kind though.

GDDR3 was GPU RAM. XDR was main memory. As I said it's unlikely the XDR can be used for textures because the latency is a bottleneck. I think I saw Guerilla Games slides once that explained once you run out of GDDR3, performance goes to shit because the bandwidth from GPU to XDR is tiny (so tiny that they pointed out the number is not a typo).

I believe the exclusives utilized texture streaming very well. BluRay was very fast to read from and they used that to their advantage, so the 256MB wasn't as limiting as it sounds. That's how they pulled off Killzone 2 on such dated hardware.

I am considering it, depending on how powerful Xbox Anaconda will actually be. If it doesn't hit 4K60fps on all games then I'll switch.
Games like REmake2 which runs at 1600p60fps made me appreciate a good steady framerate paired with nice graphics. Add in HDR and the games kinda become "alive"
