it became a meme stealth weapon during the trend of bullshit "do it your way" adventure games (read: every far cry since 3, crysis 3, the tomb raider's reboots, Horizon Zero Down and probably other games as well. Honorable mentions for the crossbow variation in dishonored and deus ex HR)
it was fucking stupid and there is a reason for why archery disappeared the moment gunpowder became cheap enough to give a rifle to everybody on the battlefield
