Haven't played any trails, but eh I've seen worse writing (the ending is wtf tier though).
The main problem with the game is the flash guard and dodge mechanic, too abusable. Hope they tune it down a bit in IX.

Nothing in my opinion. It's my favorite Ys game, personally. I played it on the hardest difficulty, forcing myself not to use healing items during bossfights.
I've played every Ys game released in the West except Seven, which I own but still have to play. I hated the party system when I first tried it when Celceta was released on PSV years ago, but Ys VIII made me change my mind. I think the party system can work after all.
I replayed Celceta after that and enjoyed it a lot more.
What I liked of VIII is that the game become more fleshed out and deep (in terms of content) than the other games in the series, and playing it on Nightmare with the no healing item restriction like the older Ys titles made for great fun (and frustration at times. Some bosses took me like 5+ hours to beat).
Then again I'm a sucker for everything Falcom, the splash screen reads Falcom and I already know I'll love the game, so I'm biased as fuck.

The only thing that went wrong is falcom giving it to NISA, who managed to fuck it up as always. Other than that, the game itself is amazing, if not the best Ys.

I second this. I loved every second of the game, also played on nightmare, though without restrictions. And I really liked the story, even the ending, I grew really attached to the characters as well. By the end of it, when I finished the game I received the platinum trophy immediatly, the game was so fun that I had done everything I possibly could before the final dungeon.
