I'm going with the first theory above which has a really weak premise and has a much longer tail and a much deeper background to it which I suspect is also very possible. Also, despite people getting confused when people talk about the games being inspired by anime like in general, it can be said that they are very closely imitating shows. This is evident by the fact that the characters are very similar with similar movesets. While this could be a good thing, I'm not so sure about this scenario. Why would we ever want to imitate the same characters from a movie or from anime on a popular series? Even anime characters have unique looks and styles from time to time. There could be different anime shows with some shows and some shows with different stories. Then, after all that, Sakurai also mentioned that he liked the plot of Danganronpa
