the thing is you are 100% right. Female protagonists are perfectly fine as long as there's no shoe-horned gender politics involved and the character has an actual good backstory with a good arc.
For STALKER backstory isn't that important anyway so a female protagonist wouldn't be much of a problem. If the story and gameplay is good then there's no problem at all.
