I am waiting till it's out next week

>Respec. Yes, you heard that right. You will finally be able to redistribute and reallocate all of the skills, stat points, feats and everything else! You’ve been asking us to add this feature for a long time. It looks so common for a computer game, but we couldn’t find a compromise that wouldn’t hinder the story and the inner logic of the game world. Finally, after a long search, we think that we’ve found that happy medium, which won’t lead to abuse but will help players fix some of the level-up and character generation mistakes instead.
In the Enhanced Edition, you’ll find a new option allowing to turn respec on and off. The high difficulty levels cannot tolerate any hesitation, so on Challenging mode and higher the option will be turned off by default. And if you’d like to turn it on manually, the difficulty level will automatically switch to “Custom”, thus locking all of the “Challenging” achievements.
Respec will be available for purchase from Anoriel Eight Eyes, the same person you buy mercs from. First three uses are free of charge, however, anything above that will cost you - more and more each time. You will be able to respec your main hero and your custom characters completely.
>Spider swarms. This enemy appeared to be a real pain for lots of players. We’ve nerfed them, we’ve added new tips, we gave out extra flasks of alchemical fire... and to no avail. Spider swarms continued to be a major source of frustration, especially during the first playthrough. So we dealt with the problem drastically: we redesigned the fangberry cave. From now on, the pesky spider swarms won’t stand in your way. You’ll be able to either gather the berries and leave in peace, or go to a separate part of the cave to fight the swarms anyway - and get a seperate reward for that.
>they caved in to casual shitters
This is why we cant have good things in current year

My wife Valerie IS cute! She IS cute! (She is! She is!)

Attached: Valerie.jpg (702x700, 123K)

>not posting her with her ugly scar

I do NOT have scar picture I have NOT reached that!

>There is another ability in tabletop which we lacked in the digital version - the ability to finish the enemy off with one fell blow, «Coup de grâce». It’s as simple as that: any character with a melee weapon can finish off a helpless creature (sleeping, paralyzed, etc.) using a full-round action. For this feature we added special new character animations. Be firm, be merciless, and leave nobody behind!
I'm going to Coup de Grace a paralyzed Valerie with love!

>optional respec option is bad
>shit enemy has made minor adjustment

How is this bad again?

the game literally spoonfed what to do with swarms and gave you the tools to combat them and you still fucking complain

stick to jrpgs, kid

Yeah, they totally ruined it. Better stop playing it. In fact, boycott them; don't interact with their fans on forums on the internet in general. That'll show 'em.

seething

A game I enjoy got a great update. You bet your ass I'm seething.

>Adepts of Nunchaku, Throwing Axes or other types of weapons which were under-represented in the game before - this is your time! Praise be to Gorum, for we’ve added more Dwarven Urgroshes and Waraxes, Fauchards, Flails, Shortspears, Darts, Double Swords and Axes to the loot - all of these used to be exceedingly rare. We’ve also added weapons of other types, including Battleaxes, Earthbreakers, Gnome Hooked Hammers, Great Clubs, Heavy Flails, Light Hammers, Light Maces, Longspears, Starknives and others.
>Totally, there are now more than 80 new spots for you to restock your armoury!
Now when will they add a fucking Greater Magic Weapon spell alongside Keen Edge

Attached: pf exotics.jpg (703x805, 153K)

there are some nice things in the update but the pandering to casuals is absolute decline. people want to go through the story, that's fine.. they should play on story mode or easy, but their fragile egos won't let them do that so they have to bitch and whine and get encounters changed for people who actually understand the DnD3.5/Pathfinder system.

same user, wanted to note that on release there were TONS of comments on the steam forums of shitters wanting to "just play and enjoy the story" but then getting ass blasted when told to put it on story mode and came back with "NO I SHOULDNT HAVE TO PLAY ON STORY MODE"

There were also shitters that "played a ton of POE" and were absolutely upset that "unfair difficulty" was "unfair"

Fuck. New meta is spam status effects for instakills. Devs will """fix""" it by making all the harder mobs immune to status effects.

>actually seething about vidya not being tailored to you specifically
Imagine.

>all games should be tailored to the lowest common denominator and absolute retards

how do I know you are a console gamer?

>Devs will """fix""" it by making all the harder mobs immune to status effects.
If anything they are caving in to the casuals by reducing overall shit that was easily beatable before with proper knowledge of the game system.
>Another painful enemy for many a player was the Technic League. We decided to take the blinding spell out of their arsenal. Now players will encounter “blindness” as a condition for the first time much later in the First chapter.
>We added new packs of ordinary wolves in the Old Sycamore area. We also made the sleeping bandits a little weaker.
>We adjusted and re-balanced the AC of some enemies
I still remember the days of WTF I'M BLIND IT DOESN'T GO AWAY IF I REST???!!!!
>duration: permanent

Is the story worth it anons?

It's ok.

>still remember the days of WTF I'M BLIND IT DOESN'T GO AWAY IF I REST???!!!!
>>duration: permanent

you have to cure it with a spell, I can't remember the name right now I'm tired.

It drops the fey redpill quite harshly.

The story IS worth it AND Valerie makes it MORE worth it! You SHOULD play AND romance Valerie!

Attached: Cute Valerie.jpg (1000x760, 159K)

Currently trying do an evil assassin run of Baldurs gate 2, but the companions I have to choose from are all shit.
>viconia
decent buff spells, not much else
>korgan
tank, probably most useful
>edwin
Ok, but every real challenging enemy i come against is resistant to almost all his magic
>yoshimo
practically useless
>valygar
very weak

Doesn’t the game lack a mechanic from be tabletop where swarms take extra damage from AoE?

don't fuck the antagonist unless you are a doormat

Seething mate, that your super hardcore gain is now more accessible.

Those are all decent characters except for arguably Valygar. You just suck at the game.

Is she a tomboy Paladin?

yes
it also fucks up other mechanics like flanking

it's decent, story comes and goes very sporadically though, since you have to wait a lot of days for the story to advance

usually you'll have shit to do i the meantime, but towards the end i had to just spam skip day over and overa gain

Wait you can fuck the antagonist? Sold.

GOG version Ok? Or does it need steam?

tell me what the fuck yoshimo and viconia are good for then?

That's annoying but livable.

The story itself is passable. The game works really well as a DnD like wish fulfilment. You save the Kingdom, with a pack of adventures and go on crazy quests with your unique builds.

pretty sure AOE doing more damage to swarms is in the game

I just found the cave to be annoying but I can see why newer players would despise that point.

Only if you go Lawful Good and purge any non-humanoid scum from your lands.

Attached: 1457654385.png (691x487, 436K)

GOG is fine

they also completely fucked AC

My councillor left after I killed the 2 other choices so I dropped the game

it was accessible from the start, it had story mode and easy difficulties, sorry you and your ilk have such unsubstantiated pride that you are unwilling to lower the difficulty when having trouble and instead choose to whine that "it's too hard."

also you could, I dunno, learn the actual fucking mechanics and game system?

>tell me what the fuck yoshimo and viconia are good for then?

Healer, thief

Again, you just suck at the game. And Yoshimo dies about 90 days in so if your main isn't a thief, you're going to be fucked if you don't pick up Jan. Edwin is objectively the best spell caster in the game. The fact that you think he sucks means you're just shit at BG2.

Yoshi is ok, abuse his traps.
Viconia is pretty good. Look up a cleric guide to turn her into a melee powerhouse.

Lawfully good is the only way to go user.

>can't even explain his reasoning
yeah you're just shit at the game also and projecting
I'll try that.

post your alignment without posting it

>yeah you're just shit at the game also and projecting

I beat the game at least 10+ times. You just suck ass and need to get gud.

She IS a tomboy FAILED Paladin! She failed SO she IS a dumb Fighter! I love my dumb wife! You SHOULD romance Valerie!

I still find it bullshit that you can't prevent it from happening.

Is the game "complete"? I tend to put off playing modern games until they release DLCs which restore cut content. Can I play it now and get the full experience?

Do I need anything beyond the explorer edition?

Enhanced edition and last DLC coming up soon.

The game is complete for a while now. Unless you really want your tiefling waifu's, you can play it whenever you want,

No!

cool i can finally pirate it

Worth $30? Or wait a bit longer for a sale?

Also tried playing pillars 2 since it has turn based now, but it's still pretty boring.

So is the Sycamore dungeon "that part" of this game?

I stopped talking to octavia early on nad never heard much about regnos BGC. And what's your fucking problem with my girl linzie? Shie's the heart and soul of the game

yep. i was legitimately excited for a fun tropical adventure and regretted the game almost immediately. the gods writing is so terrible. The world writing is bad, every town is "men bad, woman good!" and literally everyone is just illogically obsessed with sex. Im not a prude but fucking christ what happened to subtlety?

so fucking disappointed.

Lol no, just wait untill a certain pair of wizards

Did YOU back FOR Ydwin! I did NOT thankfully! I played FOR Xoti BUT Xoti leaves IN her ending! Bad wife! Bad ending! Aloth IS the ONLY loyal wife!

Sycamore dungeon takes like 5 min if you know where to go, the worst dungeon is one later on where you have to split the party to hit switches

Yeah you made a good choice dropping octavia, character aside she's shit anyways. Also, Linzee's voice grates on my ears.
Pretty much yeah, I was totally excited for fantasy colonial era caribbean, got "THE ORLAN TALKS ABKUT JERKING DUDES OFF LMAO." People who are hyped for Outer Worlds are either shills, or didn't play Pillars 2.

So I've got Divinity os 1 and 2, Pillars 1, and the original DnD games on gog. Apart from Pathfinder and Tyranny is there anything else worth grabbing?

Age of Decadence, Arcanum

have you already played the NWNs, PT, and BG?

Got Age of decadence, and I intend to play it after I'm finished with ATOM.
Does Arcanum even work on modern systems? I can't get it to launch on GOG without fucking up

Yeah.
NWN was a drag but then again I only played the original campaign, which from what I understand is one of the poorer campaigns. I'll probably get on with it after I'm done with my current backlog.

Personally I'd recommend to get a patched version from fans.

I just finished Divinity 2.

Am I alone in thinking the end was kind of garbage? Maybe I didn't understand the plot, but I hated not just the big fight at the end, but also how the game reacted after it. I thought the whole Arx section was nonsense and aside from most of the fights just being bullshit, the constantly shifting motives of every antagonist and faction in the mix made it make no sense by the end.

But I loved the gameplay and really lament the fact that I couldn't have 20 more levels and much bigger, more interesting zones to explore. I completed almost every quest in the game and got almost every reward, but it just wasn't enough real, actual content.

CH3 is a shit.

this but unironically. what a fucking autist.

Just got to Arx
Where the fuck do I go, man. Everything is kicking my ass. I'm trying to get into the city via the bridge but voidwoken and those mole looking things keep on pouring in to suicide bomb me

Atom IS good IF you like Fallout! I recommend Galina AS wife!

Attached: Galina.jpg (268x268, 19K)

I'm around 50 hours into my first Arcanum playthrough, need to rekindle interest. I'm going to finish it for sure, but I really really feel like pirating Tyranny and finally trying that.

green bullets are life, user

Thanks, resident waifufag. These threads wouldn't be half as comfy without you.

You ARE welcome user! You ARE a GOOD user! Tell me game I WILL try to tell you wife! I am wife scholar!

torrent with the dlcs where

If you're stuck on the gateway fight, one way you can try to get through the fight is to have your whole party stay back behind the carts essentially out of combat or very protected, and have one ranged character initiate the fight, so the paladins and voidwoken fight eachother. You can then slowly move in as they move around so you have better positioning. When the rolly poison-exploding dudes appear, I basically pre-emptively teleported them to the back of the gate where the couldn't explode near me.

It's a tricky fight, but play it safe and don't be afraid to pick off enemies and retreat if you really suck.

But yeah, all the fights in Arx feel like they take a huge spike upwards in difficulty, some simply through pure un-avoidable bullshit (Isbeil) but you can go around and do other quests in the city and get some XP which evens them out.

Just remember: Arx is the last chapter of the game, so if you haven't been killing every single NPC in every quest because it's just free XP, then this is a good time to start doing that because you're so close to the end of the game you might as well get all that helpful leveling.

>Came back after hearing that a lot of the bugs got reworked
>Started a new run and got decently along
>Hear that advanced edition comes out next week
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

And how would that benefit me
D:OS2 goes to shit after Act 2 and never recovers, this is a widely acknowledged fact.
The combat is also boring and really braindead but somehow people love it and to be frank, the competition isn't better outside of a game or two.
Enter Arx, start the fight against the Voidwoken by sneaking unto the upper layers of the buildings then snipe everything down with your spells or archers, respec if you have to because it's perhaps the only real "hard" fight in the game since on Tactician they hit really fucking hard and outnumber you greatly.

I'm trying out ATOM RPG with the new update now.
Ran into some non serious bug, but it's unrelated to the new update.

Was inspired to play this after watching A Boy and His Dog.

Attached: Untitled.png (1915x1080, 3.94M)

Ain't that the truth.
Valerie user even admitted to owning a collection of wives.
While anons are out there collecting rare pepes, valeriefag has been collecting rare wives!

was BALANCE MAN responsible for the super cringy writing?

Okay, bait enemies and stay away from the main arena. Thanks user, I'll give it a try.

Who's gonna be my wife for Pillars of Eternity? Tell me true, waifu scholar.

Every time someone mentions D2 I still keep assuming they really are talking about D2. Fuck it's annoying. How can a series have such a retarded naming scheme, it's stupid in release order, it's stupid by timeline, it's impossible to make less stupid.

I half expect their Baldur's Gate III to be a midquel between I and II or even a prequel.

Well, he wrote Palevagina and VTC.

What's the bug? More importantly, what do you think of ATOM?
I think it's a nice throwback to Fallout, but the combat has the same pitfalls as the old games did. I.E: attack once and then move back a few paces to beat every melee enemy in the game.

Attached: 3456789.jpg (1920x1080, 561K)

Prepare to be disappointed in Tyranny. Angrily so even. Tyranny is one of the greatest concepts ever seen in an RPG absolutely wasted on (SUPRISE) absolutely shit writing and overall plot.

I tried so hard to enjoy that game because it has such an amazing concept but in typical obsidian fashion they shit all over it with their writing.

>The combat is also boring and really braindead but somehow people love it and to be frank, the competition isn't better outside of a game or two.
I don't disagree that the actual mechanics of the game, specifically the spells and stuff are brainless because it becomes pretty easy to overpower most of the fights if you know what's going on. There was one fight, the Hermit's Hideaway that I never managed to overcome, but that's about it. I didn't even cheese any of them, it was just that some spells or class builds trivialized most of it.

However, I can't deny that the actual gameplay (not the content or balance or mechanics), such as the movement system, the targetting and casting, the methods of using skills or teleportation to traverse maps, the exploration, those things are really solid systems onto which a great game certainly could have been built.

Unironically did nothing wrong

Hi me. What are you playing to kill time in the meantime?

I'm in the factory right now, at the point where I tell Shishak to open the prison gate.
Accidentally, I stepped in front of the gate when talking to him, so Shishak is unable to open the gate because I'm in his way and I can't get out of the way because I can't click anything with the mouse.
It's nothing big, I didn't get this last time because I didn't get in the way before.

Anyway, I like the game. It is reminiscent of the old Fallout games so I immediately feel at home with the controls. Unfortunately, ATOM also inherits the problem of the older games like inventory management. Still, it's a really fun game. I tried making a thread when 1.1 came out, but there wasn't much interest.

Truly the best High Priest bar none

I burn the tree down, the summer bloom or whatever quest

what do i do next

The Varnhold DLC since I doubt too much of it will be changed with the enhanced edition

I don't deny that at its core D:OS2 can potentially be a great game, AP mechanics are extremely functional and are potentially very good for strategical gameplay, movement options are always welcome and the gimmick about elemental terrain is also a nice idea, the problem is the absolute garbage execution of it all.
My beef with D:OS2 is precisely that it squanders a potentially great system with tons of bad decisions, from the massive, exponential stat bloat, the bad stat design in itself, the horribly designed skillsets and building system, the massive overlap not only in skills but in basic functions, where you have 10 status effects of which 7 are the same exact thing and three are worthless, the deliberate destruction of the terrain system rendered useless not only by massive balance problems but mainly by fucking Necrofire covering everyting as soon as late Act 1, the horrible hidden scaling for equipment, the horrible, half assed Diablo loot system, the terrible economy that derives from all of this and deliberately punishes you from not stealing, the assassination of the crafting system in the name of balance that isn't and never was there...the list goes on and on.
And that is without considering if you actually want to cheese or atrocious bullshit like pic related, the more you play D:OS the harder it is to deal with all the shit they try to hide, and the more you realize how shallow everything is, but again, the competition definitely isn't better for most things, so I guess they can get a pass, kind of.

Bella is my waifu in Arcanum.

HELLKNIGHTS when

Yeah honestly my biggest gripes of the whole game were largely that every single fight, no matter the context or challenge, always ended up in the entire screen covered in fucking necrofire because the grand majority of enemies literally just shit out cursed surfaces. It's just kind of stupid because by the later part of the game I didn't even give a fuck anymore I was just wading through it without caring.

The other was probably the loot system and how basically only unique items could possibly have good stats on them and maybe if I was super fucking lucky, a purple or divine item might have some "on hit" effects that made them worth using, but the fact that they were randomly rolled led to me picking up fucking swords that blinded me for some reason or rings with buffs to skills from entirely different classes. And because of this, as you say, the only real way to keep on top of gear was to exploit pickpocketing mechanics (I only used Sebille as my Rogue to pickpocket but I know I could have easily just hired a half-dozen mercenaries to pick everything off a merchant) to steal chunks of items and gold off literally everyone I came across. It's the same sort of situation as how basically there's no downside to literally just killing everyone after you're done with their quest because they'll never be seen again and the way the leveling system and damage scaling works, you actually can equalize the difficulty of late game fights by just overleveling them which you will easily do if you just kill everyone for their XP.

I really wanted to love it, but as you say, there were just too many wonky ideas that need way more polish to really become useful.

I still don't understand why having two fighters with Shield Throw outdamages every other skill in the game except maybe beefy Backstab criticals or cheesed Huntsman physical damage shots.

No! I just WANT wife! Give me wife!

>Oh and kill Fane too, fuck the God King and fuck the Voidwoken.
That whole reveal with Fane and Dallis at the end was dumb as fuck (he wasn't in my party, and he was dead anyway).

Also more importantly, I killed Lucian and then purged Source to close the dimensional hole anyway because fuck having to deal with that dumb fucking God King, and then the game goes and fucking gives me the ending saying Lucian came back and everyone loved him.

Nigga fucking what?

I love fallout 1/2, IWD 1/2, BG 1/2, Underrail

I've been warned. On paper it's exactly what I want, also I want to play that one before Pillars of Eternity which I'm also ready for cause the last CRPG I beat was BG2.

Who Aldori Swordlord/Duelist no armor fighter here?

I want to have mutant babies with her

Give me Defender! Give me Duelist! Give me Swordlord! I will play Kingmaker WHEN Enhanced Edition IS released! I will SURPASS Old Sycamore!

Valygar's just a bit boring as a personality, he's fine in combat, pretty underrated I'd say. Though I still benched the shit out of him for Big Bro in ToB

starting to get bored after meeting irovetti

No!

I thought they got rid of THAC0 in Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale 2 (basically as soon as they went from 2.5E to 3.0/3.5E)

THAC0 has been gone for a long time.

Literally me.

FUCK YOU

Do you fuck your sister as well?

You don't?

Tyranny was so disappointing im actually upset over not having a better game realize its concept. I pine for the day when someone steals that concept and does it justice.

Pillars 1 is legitimately good once you get to the late game (and the DLC is really great). It start very very slow though

nah, they just renamed THAC0 to BAB.

Maybe.

I only have a brother, so.

Is he dwarf!

How is age of decadence?

Well My sister is a fat dyke who lives on the other side of the country so no.

Surprisingly good taste. Iovara would be a 10/10 waifu if she wasn't stuck in the body of a faggot.

I really like valygar, dunno why everybody hates on him.

Let your commanders handle it

He's a big guy.

Arcanum ran without any issues for me, I couldn't tell you why. From the sound of some reviews, it's a crapshoot.

Divinity 2 Dragon Knight - which class should I play?

How is the new Pathologic 2?

IMAGINE

Literal definition of a mommy

Is there a down side to prostituting yourself in Arcanum?

It's fucking maddening how stupid D:OS2 gets, it's like they stopped trying not even halfway in.
But as I said before, I'm not mad because it's a mediocre game, I'm mad because it's a game that could have been potentially incredible and a real successor to Ultima, a lot more than BG and its ilk are lauded for, but it shits the bed so hard it's absolutely fucking incredible, you even kind of admire Larian for fucking things up THIS hard.

Interesting, I thought Pillars of Eternity really lost momentum after Defiance Bay.

the downside is that you have to imagine your character having sex with a gross gnome

Should I trust you on this one user (about Pillar being good in the end)?

Arcanum doesn't run 'out of the box' on modern systems.
You have to copy-paste those DLLs, install the unofficial patch AND add some text into the shortcut.
If you don't feel like doing this, just download and install the Multiverse edition of it.

So no down sides?

Don't you imagine your character sexing a gnome as part of /ss/?

Would you say that DOS1 is a better successor to Ultima then?

Or you could just torrent the gog version.

I only just finished up playing the Bachelor on the HD version so I couldn't really tell you friend. It is a slav game so might be a good idea for them to deal with some of the jank but from what I've seen from anons in pathologic threads they like it. Plus Haruspex and Changling especially where rushed iirc, so you're getting a complete version of them. Only real downside I've heard of is that Bachelor and Changling routes aren't in and some people complaining about how stressful the game is because you have a lot to do most days and barely enough time to get it all done. Haruspex is the hard mode though so it makes sense, I'm just curious when they do Bachelor will he still be the easy mode or not.

I thought it was just bad period

>cave to casuals
>It wasn't uncommon to just keep missing and be left with no way of dealing with the fuckers

It was a bad choice putting them there.

You still need to do those even if it's GOG.
I use the GOG installer and still had to do those.

Ahhh longer wait for the final game with all 3 routes to drop. The wait is killing me.

>and a real successor to Ultima
That is a fucking hefty mantle to take, considering Ultima IV and V is one of the greatest stories in video gaming. I can't really point to a game that I'd say even comes close to picking up the gauntlet that Origins threw down.

Also as an unrelated note not only am I a big Ultima fan and have been since I was a kid, but I'm also friends with Garriott and I've played D&D with him a few times.

> I've played D&D with him a few times.
Shit, really? What characters does the guy roll?

Harrim is just a whiner
Agree on twinkboi
If he died, you should git gud. You can save him easily by not being a scrub

Are those stories really that good? For some reason it's so hard to imagine.

I can understand that. Personally I'm going to go in ASAP since I just finished Bachelor, although I might play Darkwood beforehand.

Aldori Defender currently, considering duelist. But, you get counterattack at level 10 as a Defender, not sure if it's worth it till then.

In MotB, what do I do to make the mages all sorry they attacked me?

Which class is the anti-mage?

I liked that you could eventually allow open worship of Lamashtu and get an buff + ending slide for it.

Attached: R9 divine lamashtu.png (1527x648, 1.3M)

Speaking of Ultima and Garriot, has anybody played Shroud of the Avatar?

A stronger mage

Yeah I randomly hit him up on Twitter to invite him on to my podcast/stream a few years ago and had a good time, so he was down when I invited him back to play D&D.

He played a Paladin named Rogald. Getting to DM for the dude who inspired me and got me into fantasy as a kid was pretty cool.

It's hard to explain, and I have to preface it by saying they're amazing stories that are hidden behind the gameplay of very old games that are not remotely like anything you're used to today. I'm talking about games where you manually type in your character's actions in order to make them happen on screen.

But if you can get past that, Ultima IV is a very slow-paced game where there is no big looming evil doomsday, there's just you the Hero in Sosaria after you already defeated the evil badguys, and you have to go on a journey to explore and understand the Eight Virtues that the Avatar embodies so you can actually become this paragon of virtue and a beacon for everyone.

Then in Ultima V you come back to Sosaria after time away and have to deal with the fact that people have taken your Virtues and twisted and perverted them, and you have to struggle against a new ruler who became a tyrant because he really had no idea what to do when you left.

There's tons and tons more to it, and the brief synopsis can't do it justice, but I can honestly say it's the nuance and the depth of character that really do make them fantastic stories.

I have not. I hear it's ok, some people really enjoy it, but I just didn't see anything for me there.

dude, it's epic level 3.5 dnd. casters shit all over non-casters.

D:OS1 has its own problems to work with, and unfortunately, most of those are the very same D:OS2 has, which shows how Larian learned nothing at all.
In the big picture, I consider it a better successor to Ultima than 2 though, 2 has more QoL features, a better artstyle, "better" as in not so obnoxiously silly writing, multiple main characters which I absolutely love in theory but feel massively disappointed in practice, when it comes to that classic ultima feel, it fails hard, the game doesn't feel like an adventure at all.

D:OS1 has it beat when it comes to creating a believable and engaging world to adventure in, the sillyness is often grating but at times I must say that it is also endearing, and some quests like the twin wells do feel like something out of old RPGs in their ingenuity and whimsical feel.
The game is a lot more varied than 1 when it comes to setting and most importantly, enemy encounters, there's actual unique bosses quite often, the dynamic and RP mechanics between your main characters, while massively flawed, are still more interesting than anything D:OS2 does, which is extra damning for D:OS2 given how much it keeps squandering.
When it comes to quest design, D:OS1 still has more interesting stuff to do, though D:OS2 has admittedly more to do and more variety.
Battle wise, they're the same really, slightly different problems but common mistakes.

Honestly, a D:OS1 in structure with D:OS2 care for visual details would be the best compromise, but I don't really trust Larian to ever deliver at this point, all of their games start off with amazing concepts and punctually shit the bed with the actual execution beyond the first 10 hours or so.
I'd say the D:OS games got close to classic Ultima, unfortunately they also overburdened themselves with a lot of shit from the later Ultima like 7, like the atrocious, pointless looting.
The only other games that come close for me are the SaGa games, especially the Romancing trilogy.

if you didnt fuck up with the faceless go ask them for a bunch of w2c bullets

I just don't know, it sounds strange to me. I have a vague understanding of how the earliest Ultimas played, but as for the games starting with and after 4 I'm at a complete loss. I can't imagine how they work, or how much can be done with a main character that should be a paragon of virtue at all times. Seriously, how do these games play? What do you do?

SaGa Frontier best JRPG

>Seriously, how do these games play? What do you do?
Pretty much the same thing you do in any RPG, you roam the world and engage with NPCs, you talk to them and learn details about the world around you, about people and places, and with these old games you have to write them down because there's no quest log or journal or anything that keeps track of who anyone is or what they said. There aren't like, fetch quests or anything, but there are quests and missions and jobs you can do. For the main story in IV you travel to the Virtue shrines and then you have to figure out how to perform actions in the game that show that you embody that specific Virtue. But since there's no quest guide or journal or minimap or anything, you have to figure out for yourself what those things are and how you can do them.

Ultima V improves on this in a lot of ways, but it adds another element to the game in that the Shadowlords (they're on the cover) have corrupted the Virtues, you have to deal with people differently because they'll either be hostile to you or even try and turn you in to the guards. I think the difference, and the reason the story is interesting and well-developed is because it's not combat that really decides anything about the plot. You have to find out how to fix things by exploring and talking to people, all while dealing with the temptation to not embody what the Avatar stands for.

Basically what I'm saying is: They're role-playing games. You take on this role, and then everything else is on you to figure out. If you can get past the sort-of old and clunky gameplay, the actual RPG experience is easily far and away above what almost any other game series even tries to do.

Pick them up and give them a try if you really want to challenge yourself. You'll need paper and a pen to take lots of notes.

Just a little reiteration: I cannot understate how these games do literally nothing to hold your hand. These are old, old games, long before tutorials or internet for guides or cheats or anything like that.

These are games that originally shipped on literal paper floppy disks.

Thank you for taking the time to explain, user. It's a long series so it's not high on my priority list at this time, but I do want to try at least the 4-6 trilogy eventually.

Pretty well. Just started a dwarf ranger.

Viconia Korgan and Edwin are all the best companions in the game due to single class, strong stats and added bonuses (MR, extra spells, strong kit).
Yoshimo and Valygar suck dick. You may opt for Jansen as Thief/Mage (single class Thief is useless) and maybe Anomen.

I would say VI is the weakest story-wise out of the three, but only because V sets the bar so high. Though VI is easily the most modern of the three also, it's got a lot of quality changes (though it does have problems, looting is the biggest one).

I also like VII but it's a completely different game, and I think it's when things went a little off the rails in terms of questing painfulness. Also you basically have no control over combat in VII.

Never, ever play VIII or IX. I cannot stress enough, NEVER play IX.
