I hate how Sonic USA has become a self aware boomer cracking jokes at his expense. I tuned in to their yearly twitter Q&A and was just disappointed and embarrassed. It was like if Mario kept referencing their god awful live action movie in 1993, if Call of Duty kept spamming “press F to pay respects, if Square Enix kept talking about FF13 or their awful CGI movies etc.
Basically it was just a lot of unfunny banter at their own expense. Can you think of any other franchise that does this? To me it’s not really funny to constantly roast yourself to promote a new thing as it gets old really quick. Fuck even the Sonic Boom cartoon did this. Classic sonic will always be cool to me since he didn’t need terrible voice acting and story to be cool, he was just cool and likeable with his actions and capabilities.
Maybe if the franchise wasn't an embarrassment to begin with, they would actually take him seriously.
Wyatt Martin
They tried that with Forces and it was even more embarrassing and cringey then self-referential Boom Sonic.
Josiah Brown
Blame youtubers making millions of videos laughing at 06 Soic is now harmless looney tunes
Austin Cox
Why are you using an image from Unleashed there when Unleashed probably had the best portrayal of Modern Sonic?
Nathaniel Reed
No, forces was a step in the right direction tone wise, its way better than toon shit
Easton Butler
That's because of Pontaff. If we want good Adventure Era stories, we need Maekawa back.
Parker Foster
>They tried that with Forces No they didn't, they just fell back into their worst traits and dialed them up. Forces was a culmination of every terrible idea Sonic Team has had and none of the good.
Hunter Bennett
sunshine dialogue and story is legitimately more cringe than the average sonic plot
Jason Carter
Too lazy to find one with colors sonic, this was originally a meme against boost.
Joshua Miller
The issue is that it negativity/nihilism/self-referencial "humour" sells in this day and age. All bad press is good press. Your anger makes you remember it. People no longer let things go. Social media has enabled a self-sustaining trend of nonsensical repetition that will sell until the industry itself collapses. 'Voting with your wallet' was always dogshit. 'Saying nothing and letting it die off' is also dogshit. They've cut out the middleman and you will always keep coming back. Always.
Aiden Lee
Pontaff doesn't write the story, he only writes the localized script.
Samuel Jenkins
and fills said script with cringe jokes that arent in the original
Owen Cook
What's really weird is how Sonic is the only character that's written this way. I think the most glaring example comes from Team Sonic Racing, which Pontaff wasn't even involved in.
When you mess up a stunt as Sonic, he says "Ouch! Messed up!" in Japanese. This is translated to "Oof! Epic stunt fail!" and it's just so bizzare to me because everyone else is written pretty well for the most part. There's some weird lines here and there but none of it is anywhere near as bad as what comes out of Sonic half the time.
It almost feels like the English writers hate Sonic and want to make him as insufferable as humanly possible. What's worse is that some fans actually like this shit, saying things like "sonic is SUCH an epic memelord lol!!!" and "sonic was always saying catchphrases in the 90s so it make sense" even though there was a reason we moved on from that in the 2000s.
I just want the real Sonic back bros... It's been nine years...
Luis Powell
>People actually believe this This is why Sonic will never be taken seriously. Sonicfags have ZERO standerds.
Even fucking Mario pulled of "serious" shit better.
Jaxon Evans
Forces is just as shit and badly written in Japanese as it is in English.
Mason Cox
Person A posts, Person A replies to Person A's post. This repeats until Person B falls for it. Person C can call it out, but Person B will ALWAYS exist, whether as an actual person or just an automated feedback loop. You no longer need real people - word of mouth - to sell. You just need control of the means to socialize.
Hudson Hughes
No
Shut the fuck up and go back to watching sonic toon
Easton Perez
>Shut the fuck up and go back to watching sonic toon I don't watch Sonic period because I don't have shit taste user.
Charles Gray
Nobody at Sonic team knows how to write witty dialogue so they just substitute it with 'le epic meme bantz'.
Lucas Perry
The fact that you think Pontaff is one person shows how little you know about this. First off, it's Ken Pontac and Warren Graff. We just call them Pontaff because they're both equally responsible for the bastardization of Sonic in English since 2010. And yes, they actually have written the scripts before. They wrote the scripts for Colors and Lost World. The reason Colors' Japanese script is much better is because the English script was made first, and the Japanese team tried their best to remove all the shitty jokes.
Brayden Richardson
They made a not that interesting plot worse. "That's why it's called war", "Sonic's been tortured", "Tails has just lost it", were all Pontaff's doing. Either way, Maekawa needs to return if we want good mainline stories again.
Juan Jenkins
Normally I would agree that this whole "Normies can't like things unless it's overtly self aware" ie Ironic weebs. But honestly Sonic was never at it's best when it has tried to be earnest, it works best as WAY PAST COOL or goofy and aware
Jason Harris
You had me until you relieved your some classic-sonic boomer fuckhead.
Liam Morales
The fact that they're now at the point where they can make fun of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric doesn't really sit right with me. I thought the meme humor, self-deprecation, and self-awareness were great changes for the brand's image, but Boom was JUST on store shelves a few years ago expecting people to drop $40 for it. I just don't think it's a good look to make fun of your product's quality directly to the audience that's expected to buy it.
So are you basically saying making a lasting impression so that people remember you is all that matters?
Easton Lopez
Don't you mean post Unleashed Sonic? Cause ever game post Unleashed was godawful.
Chase Flores
He's not wrong though. I'd unironically rather Sonic be mute than continue to have the shitty English characterization he's had since 2010.
Don't get me wrong, I despise those boomer fuckheads who hate everything about the series post-1993, think Sonic's friends are worthless, throw a fit when you call """"Robotnik"""" Eggman, etc. especially since they're part of the reason why Sonic is so shit now (IT ONLY HAS SANIC AND TAILS FIGHTING ROBOTNIK LIKE THE OLD DAYS SO MUCH BETTER!!! LOL SONIC IS SO FUNNY WITH COPYRIGHT LAW JOKES WAY BETTER THAN THAT EDGY SHIT THAT HURTS MY BRAIN) but if they're right about one thing, it's that classic Sonic never "tried" to be cool in Japan. And it was like that in English too from 1998 to 2009, despite what they might say.
Kayden Campbell
>Current year >People still try to defend the Adventure Games as anything other then schlock I grew up with them and have fond memories of them but the fact people still defend this games are great masterpieces instead of dumb goofy messes is pathetic.
If every discussion of a game goes "Yeah it's flawed but..." then maybe it isn't as good as you think it was.
>But honestly Sonic was never at it's best when it has tried to be earnest t. Never played the Adventure games or Unleashed
Charles Price
Sonic fans will literally buy anything with Sonic's name in it so it doesn't matter.
The Sonic film can literally be an exact recreation of Two Babies and a Fox and Sonic fans will still pay to see it.
Levi Gray
Right. Make noise and don't stop making noise. When you stop making noise, you've either been murdered or someone has taken your means of making noise.
Gavin Moore
Not at all, the games were never goofy and aware until Colors in 2010.
Samuel Brown
I played adventure last week and it was really good, go fuck yourself
Logan Torres
They had soul. Every game is flawed, and none are flawless. HOwever, some technically flawless games are also incredibly boring and soulless. I'd rather have a technically flawed game with soul and fun than the latter.
Generations was still good in terms of gameplay and art style. I consider it to be the true Sonic's dying breath.
Brayden Sanchez
>Never played the Adventure games or Unleashed The ones with awful writing and had one segment of good gameplay intermixed with a lot of segments of unfun bullshit?
Yeah, I played them. I also remember literally everyone and their mother finding Chip obnoxious.
Brandon Sullivan
Ah of course the eternal memer, sonic is le bad lmao projared told me so
Thomas Thomas
Still boost.
Adrian Hill
Sonic Team's been dissolved/merged internally. Next big Sonic game would essentially either be another mobile game, Olympics/Sports or Sonic Xenoverse.
Samuel Hughes
I remember watching the 90s cartoons and he was always depicted as annoying but at least likeable and good hearted, kind of like spongebob or something. However I never liked the Sonic character as I found him too whiny, chatty and annoying.
Mason Lee
The self-aware jokes are low effort but honestly the tryhard Sonic that's lame by design in the Boom cartoon is infinitely better than the completely unironic out of date smarmy Sonic we've been getting since Adventure who doesn't shut the fuck up.
>Excusing Adventure I have a lot of personal nostalgia for those games and Adventure 2 in particular even did a lot of things right thematically but if you think Adventure games were Sonic as a character "done right" you're fucking blinded by having played those games as a kid. That was the beginning of lanky uncool abomination Sonic spouting "cool" lines that were 10 years out of date the second they were written.
Jayden White
I've played them all user, I say I've played Adventure 1 about 20 times. Those games are all mixed bags game play wise and the story had way more lows and annoying characters than highs Are you telling me Sonic Heroes and Sonic R aren't goofy?
Julian Ramirez
Meow?
William Richardson
>playing adventure in English lmao
Hunter Hill
It's hard to really get that upset when Aaron basically saved their image to zoomers. This franchise is not earning itself new fans.
Brayden Long
why don't they just make sonic porn games and movies then, if only sonic fans care then at least their audience will finally be happy
Eli Gray
What about Unleashed and Black Knight?
Lincoln James
Can people just say warm nostalgia instead of soul? It's what it really means
Caleb Foster
Alright, this is the only thing I will attest too. Sonic trying to be ambitious was a noble thing even if it never lands well.
However it's the fact people claim many of these stories were great instead of tonal messes is what I call bullshit.
It's one thing appreciating the effort and laughing and it's goofiness but it's another when people are claiming they actually did it well. Mania was good. Every 2D Sonic past the first one was good. Generations was alright Adventure, Unleashed and fuck even Heroes were games that I enjoyed despite being ass most of the time.
You can like things wile acknowledging they failed at what they tried to achieve.
Alexander Campbell
You left out the word "aware" that time
Heroes and every other game from that era were played 100% straight. You were supposed to look up to Sonic when he said "-real superpower of team work," not laugh at him.
Michael Johnson
Explains Let’s Players.
Ryan Sanders
In AOSTH he was like that
In SATam he was a baby that needed Sally to save him from getting himself killed every episode
Anthony Campbell
Adults would get angry about what there kids are seeing, even if little Timmy has already been masturbating to Amy porn for a good while now.
Landon King
>However it's the fact people claim many of these stories were great instead of tonal messes is what I call bullshit. But they were though. That's why we have characters we actually like from the Adventure era, and there are no characters people give a shit about since then. Shadow and Rouge are fucking beloved.
>You were supposed to look up to Sonic when he said "-real superpower of team work," not laugh at him. Same with Forces.
Liam Russell
What else are they going to do? Take it seriously?
You do realize the state the franchise is in right now right?
William Thomas
What? I never mentioned the Adventure games. I’m just saying post colors sonic is cringe.
Cameron Davis
>Are you telling me Sonic Heroes and Sonic R aren't goofy? There's nothing wrong with Sonic being silly as long as it's written well. I mean look at Riders' cutscenes. The problem is that it isn't. Half of the time it's just Sonic standing around saying something """hilarious""". There's no action or anything. It's especially bad when the story wants you to take it seriously like in Forces but you've got Sonic making awful one-liners like some wannabe Deadpool.
Easton Wright
Maybe the last couple of games shouldn't have been mediocre or plain bad. Seriously Sega was on a roll with Unleashed (ambitious but Werehog soiled it), Colors, and peaked with Generations. Then 2012 happened and all we got was Sonic 4 Ep II, which was mediocre and then the Nintendo deal happened which really screwed over Sega big time. Lets be real here if Sonic had a game during the early 8th gen it could have been better but no lets put it on the Wii U which was a terrible system (with good games here and there) sales wise. Now all Sega has for this current generation of hardware is Sonic Forces which looks nothing like a next gen sonic game. Seriously the only way Sonic can get back up on his feet is to simply remake the Sonic Adventure games and from there apply the working assets to a true next gen Sonic game. Because I'll be damned if a 11 year old Xbox 360/PS3 game still looks better than the current gen games
Right, my point is that Sonic was always like that
Lucas Gutierrez
>No, forces was a step in the right direction tone wise Are you fucking insane?
Elijah Ramirez
When will you learn that your actions have consequences?
Jaxon Davis
Are you fucking insane? Who likes toon sonic more than serious sonic? Fuck off
Jordan Roberts
Just make fucking good games, holy shit.
Oliver Sanders
>The fact that you think Pontaff is one person I know they're two people, i just wasn't sure if Graff was still writing since everyone only says Pontaff and I don't care enough about them to remember what Pontac's name is supposed to be.
Either way, again, they don't write the story, they only write the script, and the stories are just as bad regardless of their terrible script.
Jack Russell
Weird how people say that since Sonic is a kids franchise he shouldn't be "too serious", especially as Cartoon Network made Kids Cartoons a lot edgier and serious since the 1990's
Heck the Tangled and new Ducktales cartoons which are recent Disney cartoons are even more edgy and Shounen-ish than post colors Sonic
>and there are no characters people give a shit about since then What about Blaze? With the exception of Shadow and 06, the post-Adventure days were still good up until 2010.
Landon Johnson
Blaze and Silver are pre boost era, and Sonic 06 is also still considered Adventure Era to some people. They count. People still liked them.
The only legitimate good character was Gamma/Omega which yeah credit where credit is due whoever wrote those two deserves a fucking raise or something because they were fantastic. Shadow on the other hand is an absolute embarrassment that started the devolution of the franchise being a joke and Rouge is only liked for her tits and pornography.
But hey, Blaze is also alright at least.
Nicholas Brown
Nobody likes Mr. No Use Everybody likes Blaze because she came from a good game and she plays like Sonic. Seriously whats so hard about that?
Chase Davis
And Forces was a cringey embarrassing game nobody liked except you.
Samuel Price
Threadly reminder that 3D Sonic was a mistake
Jeremiah Brooks
I still think the presentation in Black Knight, Rings and Unleashed are top notch, it just sucks those games are not mostly good. I still love the storybook presentation in Black Knight and the boost to win mechanic was an acceptable saving grace after the dumpster fire of 2006
Nolan Fisher
>shadow is an embarrasment imagine actually believing that
Just because a lot of Sonic's lines have been memed over the years doesn't mean the entire characterization was trash. Look at the scene where Eggman shoots Sonic out of the Ark, or Sonic and Shadow's confrontation, those are legitimatley well directed scenes (minus the sound mixing) and Sonic's character absolutley shines in those. Also, Sonic acting like a 90's character is perfectly fine since he literally is a 90's character.
Joseph Thomas
Forces still had a shit depiction of Sonic though. It's not as offensive as he was in other post-2009 games but it's still bad and not what people want. He's still a bitch who tries too hard to be funny.
One moment that really stood out to me was Sonic whining when the final boss robot came out. Like I get that the point was that Sonic had already struggled enough and is just plain sick of this shit, but since the story does such a shit job at showing Sonic, or really anyone, actually struggling through these events, it just comes off as more post-2009 Sonic awfulness. Whining like a kid who doesn't want to do chores.
Dylan Ward
I actually agree with you despite spending this whole thread shitting on Sonic and his friends as a characters.
Unleashed especially was easily the closest of pulling the more serious/Shonen side of Sonic pretty damn well actually. What ultimately ruined it though was Chip being an unlikable character and too much bullshit ruining the decent boost gameplay.
Brayden Richardson
spoilers soul is a buzzword just like fun is, it literally means nothing but "its old and i liked it"
John Sanchez
Cringe
Camden Johnson
>Excluded from the main series. >Excluded from the spin-offs. >Excluded from a racing game with fucking TEAM ROSE! on it. Just bring her back already! Cream was a big part of sonic during the GBA,Gamecube,DS and PS2 era... She deserves way better than the crap she's got in later years.
The key to Sonic is to integrade humor and lightheartedness with grandiosity and drama. If you only focus on humor and lightheartedness you get Lost World and Colors. If you only focus on grandiosity and drama you get Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 06. Craft a setting that can take itself seriously and just have fun with it. Something natural that can be as funny as it needs to be, but it itself isn't a joke. Eggman needs to be a silly manchild but he also needs to be a genuinely dangerous and threatening villain. Sonic himself needs to be cool and level-headed with a streak of rebellious humor, not a constantly wisecracking clown. Cool people don't try to be cool, they just are cool. Sonic CD is the best example of nailing Sonic's cool factor and atmosphere. There's a balance there that needs to be kept in check.
>Even fucking Mario pulled of "serious" shit better. This is true. Just take a look at the Paper Mario series pre-Sticker Star, or even some moments in Mario & Luigi. It's a shame nu-Mario mandates are still forces on those series when the main Super Mario series has become creative again with Odyssey.
Caleb Phillips
How come it's okay when Fang the Sniper has a gun but it's "edgy" when Shadow the Hedgehog does it?
Jace Wood
>It's Sonic Are you a human from the Adventure era? Cream not being around is a fucking shame
Rings had good cutscenes and Shara but fuck the gameplay and ring collecting Black Knight had somehow worse gameplay and the twist is shit Unleashed had ambition and was a seriously right step in Sonic's career, but Hashimoto fucked up and made the werehog a thing because God of War.
Ethan Collins
He's a parody of himself now just like every other character
Matthew Parker
>If you only focus on grandiosity and drama you get Sonic Adventure 2 So you'll get the best game the entire franchise has had? What's wrong with that?
It’s like what some user here said (too lazy to find post). At least they tried to make an ambitious, engaging story. Forces feels like they put 0 effort and they wanted to be taken more seriously. Fuck even I enjoy 2006’s story because at least there was some drama and emotion, no matter how badly executed it was. Forces was just
They're in one of the final stages of defeat: total embrace of craptulence. Where they hope to lower the bar so low, they can actively get away with intentionally releasing shit.
Angel Roberts
>same size >same proportions >same face >same number of quills He's a pretty derivative design. Just dye Sonic black, stop shaving everything but his face, give him red highlights and red eyeliner, and presto you got Shadow. Compare him to characters like Tails and Knuckles who have unique shapes and proportions and Shadow looks like a DeviantArt OC. Hell, his lazy ass design is the whole reason that autism even exists.
Grayson Taylor
> if you think Adventure games were Sonic as a character "done right" you're fucking blinded by having played those games as a kid. That was the beginning of lanky uncool abomination Sonic spouting "cool" lines that were 10 years out of date the second they were written. Finally.
Robert Robinson
US branches was a mistake
Levi Wright
Shut up Japan. Stop being petty jealous asswipes.
Ian James
I want people to start lewding Zavok hard so Sega sweeps him under the rug and pretends he never existed
Nicholas Gomez
why do they let this autist run rampant?
Jonathan Wilson
What a load of this. Sonic was always a character designed to have an attitude but spouting one liners and being a "90's character" gets dated real fast. Sonic wasn't created as a character to depict the 90's, he was just an anthropomorphic hedgehog with an attitude. Classic Sonic perfectly portrayed this and is by all means timeless. Modern Sonic was a mistake.
>same size Shadow is shorter >same proportions Quills are incredibly different, and shoes are completely different >same face Eyes are different and so arre colors. Plus Shadow has chest fur while Sonic just has a big round beige spot on his stomach >same number of quills Shadow has one more than Sonic.
Brayden Ward
omega and gamma are the best sonic characters, they are also the sexiest. robots > furries
Blake Morris
Grow a pair of balls and show some authority
Gavin Taylor
Fang's gun is pretty unique and fits the Sonic aesthetic.
Reminder anytime people recalls any memorable moments from Sonic, whether good or bad, is always from the Adventure era. Modern Sonic literally offers nothing to care about.
Sonic's coolest moments? Adventure era. Most memorable quotes? Adventure era. The voice of Sonic? Always Ryan Drummond. Everyone's favorite music? Adventure era. Best story? Somewhere in the Adventure era.
Modern Sonic has no legacy. When it dies, nobody will remember it. Sega can keep trying to push it as good, but it will never be nothing but a joke in the eyes of the fan and the causals they are trying to cater to.
Juan Taylor
It's simple, almost toylike in nature, but still vaguely menacing, befitting a lot of the machines Eggman makes as well.
I think that's a good way to portray the machines in the franchise
Josiah Perez
I think one of the worst things the series has going for it is that modern Sonic is one of the worst characters in the cast. I used to subscribe to the idea that the games should just be about sonic and all the friends should go away, but looking at how uncharismatic Sonic is now, I really think he needs a supporting cast.
>thinking horrible sonic recolor OCs didn't exist before Adventure 2
Somebody missed the horrors that were early sprite comics...
Grayson Lopez
>Adventure era I dunno. The intro and endings of Sonic CD are stiff competition.
Christian Rogers
>The voice of Sonic? Always Ryan Drummond. Funny, I always see people referencing Griffith way more than Ryan. youtu.be/GxpjlR3fHhs
Adam Hall
Literally this. Whenever people think about Sonic, they think about Adventure era Sonic. Unless they're thinking about the absolute atrocious writing of the boost era. "Baldy McNosehair"
By "Modern Sonic" I do hope you're referring to post-2009 games.
Cameron Collins
There it is again. Why, of all things, do you people have to constantly bring up "Baldy McNosehair" like its a line that single handedly destroys the franchise's credibility?
Jayden Cooper
Literally, when people think about Sonic, they think about Green Hill Zone
Yeah, people who still cling to the "shitty friends" meme propably didn't even touch a sonic game in the first place I dunno, Unleashed had some pretty good music.
Angel Edwards
I'd say people know more about Sonic 06 and Sonic being terrible than Green Hill zone
Ayden Parker
"No copywright law in the universe is going to stop me!"
"Theres nothing funny about it, Vector. Thats why its called WAR."
Adam Jones
Because it is THE line that describes the Modern games in a nutshell. A shitty joke.
Andrew Jackson
I think they're both great. I dislike Roger though, his voice is far too different from any previous portrayal of Sonic in English.
Henry Howard
And thats a bad line because...?
Josiah Thomas
The people who know about and reference '06 are well aware of his heyday in the Genesis era.
Luis Jones
cream the rabbit(instructions)
Brayden Morales
"SONIC, HELP ME!"
Nathaniel Thompson
I'm not saying Sonic being associated with Green Hill Zone is a good thing but you're being intellectually dishonest if you think people don't associate the two more than anything from Adventure era onward.
David Williams
He sounds great in Boom to be fair, he seems to have a lot more range and freedom there, where with modern he tries to sound like everything's always cool.
Grayson Walker
This is the only other line I know modern sonic for. Is this really all modern sonic has? copyright law and baldy mcnosehair?
Jayden Cox
>US branch made Sonic 2 >JP branch made CD
Dylan Turner
"I... I'm shaking... Me?! Me... Afraid...?! Urgh... Pathetic?! Me... he's calling ME weak?! No! I am not weak! I'm... I'm not. I'm not weak!"
Zachary Morris
He was fine in SA2 but after that point he became a parody of himself.
Jace Roberts
There's literally no reason for SOnic to even bring up copywright laws at that moment.
Cameron Harris
US branch was still spearheaded by japs, check mate Drumpf
Asher White
That's a good quote though, memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Nathaniel Rogers
>>Sonic's coolest moments? CD intro >Most memorable quotes? Silly meme ones like FIND THE COMPUTER ROOM, WHERES THAT DAMN 4th CHAOS EMERALD, LOOK AT ALL THOSE EGGMAN ROBOTS >The voice of Sonic? Cartoon will always be Jackell White to me but I like Chris Redfield the best, Ryan was the second best, fuck Griffith >Everyone's favorite music? Sonic 2, Heroes and CD. >Best story? Adventure 1
Out off all of those, only one Advenutre series got a mark
John Hernandez
>Being jealous of the branch that never made anything good without their help. Lol, okay.
Luis James
>projecting: the post
Nathaniel Cox
What was it a followup line to?
They've hated Sega of America since the early 90s, when they made the Genesis a huge hit in the US while it struggled in Japan.
Adam Wright
The friends aren't the worst, just make them talk less
People often blame bad voice acting on the actors, when more often than not, similar to screen acting, bad writing and direction are more likely to be the problem.
Andrew Ross
>When Sega keeps forcing Zavok the Wisps even though they are at the very bottom of everyone list of favorites in the fandom. >When characters that gained popularity back in the Classic and Adventure days never got any play.
So basically, it really doesn't matter how popularity a character is. If that character is the creator's pet, they will appear no matter what.
Characters like Fang, Mephiles, and even fucking Marine are more popular than those Mario rejects, but they'll never appear again because they aren't the babies of whatever dev in the office. Such biased faggots. "Listening to the fans" my ass. That has always been a lie.
Noah Hernandez
You really don't need a supporting cast if you can write good banter between Sonic and whoever he encounters (optimally Eggman)
Zachary Russell
So its a humorous response to Eggman's legal-ese. Exactly the kind of 4th wall breaking, self aware comedy that made Looney Tunes famous.
Nothing wrong with that.
Nathaniel Campbell
>Sonic coolest moments >CD Intro People remember LIVE AND LEARN and OPEN YOUR HEART way more than the CD intro >Voice of Sonic You didn't even fucking mention Roger Craig Smith you fuckward >Everyone's favorite music? >Classic shit and Heroes Lol. No, people way prefer Adventure's music. Hell, Sonic 06 has some pretty fucking amazing tracks. Way better than the chiptunes of Classic garbage. >Best Story Adventure has only one good story, and that's Gamma. Adventure 2 is the best and most memorable.
Connor Ward
>Sega gets rid of the friends. >Makes Sonic's character absolutely insufferable.
Modern Sonic may just be Sega getting revenge on the fanbase and burning the franchise down.
Lucas Davis
Fang is limited to "Classic" now. Marine...well, no one liked her. Mephiles is dead, making him off limits.
Nolan Barnes
OK, you are either a master craft shit poster or legit autist Gamecube baby
Christopher Roberts
>So its a humorous response to Eggman's legal-ese. Exactly the kind of 4th wall breaking, self aware comedy that made Looney Tunes famous. What does that have to do with Sonic
>bing bing 64 rehash #5000 >"creative" 3d land was creative. odyssey isn't.
Mason Sanchez
I am not surprised Boco is defending Modern Sonic. In every argument, he is always the one with shit-taste without fail.
Noah Williams
remove Sonic's gun
Dylan Long
Boco... What the fuck are you talking about? That shit didn't exist in the Classic games or the Adventure games. How the fuck does that belong in the franchise now?
Henry Stewart
Agreed. When its cracks at Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06... Sure, those happened, they were ridiculous, and they were both 13+ years ago at this point But when its stuff that was JUST released like Forces and the Boom games... Like damn, what a fucking disconnect between the social media team/PR and the actual Sonic Team
it was funny for a bit, but they overuse the "we know we suck" jokes too much, especially since they still suck with forces and an underwhelming racing game.
Adam Williams
sega would have gone third-party years before they actually did if not for the us branch. they'd probably still be making consoles today if soj just listened to soa and didn't run off all their talent.
Daniel Evans
Hell no. That implies Forces was anything other than a steaming turd.
Carter Scott
TSR was good, just not as good as Transformed
Kayden Lee
Forces literally killed the memes. The memes promised good games and learned lessons. Forces ended up being another bad game.
Gavin Lee
Worked for the Adventures cartoon. And early Archie.
Brandon Flores
>Thats what Sonic should have been in the first place. That was never Sonic, and never will be Sonic.
>People like Boco is what Modern Sonic panders to.
Yeah, I think that's proof enough for it to be shelved and forgotten.
Jaxson Perry
It technically was Sonic in AoStH and early Archie comics. Which is probably what he grew up with. But Sonic has always been the same in Japan. Even today he's still more or less written the same as he was way back then.
Jason Parker
And they'll promise it again, and you'll believe them again... you or some other sucker will start the cycle all over again.
Camden Young
And as we've established, Japan is not always right.
Xavier Hughes
not him, but what should sonic be then?
Samuel Nelson
But neither is the West.
Colton Scott
Japan made 06. Then made Forces. They don't get a say anymore.
Nicholas Wilson
Didn’t one of you say there was no reason for Sonic to say that? In context the reason for that banter is clear.
>Everyone's favorite music? eh I'd argue people like the classic music more, other then that your right.
>Sonic's coolest moments? thats the problem with modern games, sonic just doesnt have any cool moments anymore, not in cutscenes or in gameplay. Sonic had the running away from the whale, the GUN truck, racing down speed highway's building, even 06 had the flaming tornado. There's nothing memorable about modern sonic himself and his games.
Even if you dont like adventure games, sonic advance still had "modern" sonic in classic gameplay. The gamecube/ps2 era had the best progression for sonic.
The friends were never the problem. Sega proved they can make bad games with sonic by himself anyway with secret rings, and lost world. All sega needs to do is a make a good game, whether they do it with sonic by himself or having his friends doesn't matter to me.
>fast paced combat ala dmc. In...Sonic? How? And why?
Jose Martinez
well if sonic wasn't so bad in the first place, maybe youtubers wouldn't have made fun of it. I know youtubers like grumps are grossly exaggerating it but in the end its still sonic team and sega's fault.
Justin Evans
personally I think you should break up with your girlfriend rather than string her along while you fuck chicks on the side and ask children for nudes but thats just me
I unironically think (pre-Pontaff) Shadow is cool. He's my favorite Sonic character by far, and I genuinely miss when this franchise wasn't afraid to take itself seriously. ShtH and '06 went a bit too far though, I'll give you that much
Inserting comedy and wit into Shadow was a mistake. He should be played straight but limit itself reasonably.
Dylan Parker
even 06 and shth shadow are better than kirk thorntons "knuckles but isnt a wimp" shadow of today
Liam Williams
Most shadowfags are gays and trannies (and women) and their opinions hold no value.
Brayden Turner
That's the ticket
Cameron Ortiz
/sthg/ is full of shadowfags and it's full of gayshit as well
Ryan Clark
i have never enjoyed a sonic game beyond the first few levels
Bentley Campbell
It's just one faggot who is always shitposting.
Christian Moore
that got me laughin thank you
Brody Edwards
>some fans actually like this shit, saying things like "sonic is SUCH an epic memelord lol!!! You might be tempted to say most if you take a look at the dedicated social media pages.
Aaron Adams
no those are falseflaggers spamming that shit to make him look bad notice how all that shit is out of character and makes him some sissy faggot instead of the totally dominant character hes portrayed as they arent shadowfags have the latest gaytrash filter and turn off stubs pastebin.com/q3iyAMmF

I loved the original Sonics but I don’t understand how this franchise is still alive. And believe me I want it to thrive. I kind of want it to be better than Mario. There’s like 200 Mario games and there’s like 12 Sonic games. What I’m saying is I don’t understand how this franchise is still alive after all these years. Sonic just isn’t as big as other characters such as Mario, which sucks, but it’s true. I only really care about the first three since I grew up on them.
Ryan King
Yes, exactly. Except Sonic can't seem to play anything straight now, which makes me quite sad. Shadow's character suffers a lot from this.
'06 Shadow was kino and ShtH Shadow wasn't that bad in the JP version. The game just suffered from really bad localization. But yeah I agree, Thornton needs to be fired. He's not a good Shadow. Would like someone who can replicate Humphrey's Shadow.
Gays are attracted to shadow for whatever reason, probably due to his shojo personality. They just want to fuck him regardless of how other shadowfags think Shadow would act.
Adrian Collins
Sonic has gone through more than a fucking decade of humiliation and degradation. All Sega can do now is try to play it all off as some sick cruel joke. Because that's all it's good for in this day and age.
no but beating weak twerps into submission does from shths multiple endinge to 06 silver to forces infinite he has never been portrayed as some gender dysphoria sissy like those faggots draw him
>admits to liking badly voiced characters with one dimensional personalities >chooses image of Rogue, a favorite of furries, to go along with his argument this is why your fan base is trash
Jordan Roberts
>hedgelet fans are manlets
Bentley Allen
More likely young girls.
Hunter Thomas
Shadow's TSR interview makes him seem way too overcompetitive desu
Jacob Robinson
>that pic Holy cringe, get the fuck out. There's no such thing as Adventure Sonic, it's all Modern Sonic.
Classic Sonic is the only good one.
Xavier Gomez
I assume he is the one drawing it all as well then
Chase Rivera
>classicucks seething because everyone likes dreamcast era the most yep every thread
Evan Stewart
>Classic Sonic games sell like crazy to this day >Dreamcast games only sell to retarded manchildren who are still stuck in their teen years
The Twitter thing isn't supposed to be serious That first one you posted is a literal meme You are right that they are inconsistent in characterization though.
Luis Walker
Heroes is the best game in the series.
Prove me wrong.
Dominic Green
>Shadowfags and haters make the thread about them, as usual.
If you want to be technical, Sonic 2006 started the Boost meme with Mach Speed segments.
Kevin Morris
>Forces was a step in the right direction tone-wise
Sonic being tortured for months and then being fine? Tails regressing from his Adventures characterization? Infinite being Edgy the Hedgey 2.0 without a hint of irony?
Hard pass.
Andrew Garcia
Irony is the refuge of hacks.
Brody Wilson
i have yet to see a character with a more cringe fandom than shadow
Owen Cooper
wasn't the "torturing for month" a traduction error?
I wonder what new gimmick will 3D Sonic experiment and keep re-utilizing in its next future game, now that boost might be regarded as not successful anymore to Sonic Team.
For whatever gimmick it is, for certain, it isn't the "one" where it has incorporated actual momentum and physics with adaptations, the return of many playable characters to it that play like Sonic with different flowing abilities, and a developed and competent level design that can't be summarized to just straight corridors.
I'm gonna be honest but Sonic was never really that good to begin with even back in the day. Mario has always been more consistent in terms of quality and what you could expect from the franchise, while Sonic always tried different things and really gets it right. Sonic 2 is the game that all Sonic games should strive to be in my opinion, focus on his speed!
Austin Smith
This post was made by a flaming homo.
Andrew Murphy
>Sonic 2 is the game that all Sonic games should strive to be in my opinion, focus on his speed! Cringe
Anthony Cruz
>not having the game be a balance of platforming, exploration and speed like 3&K and Mania eh.
>his voice is far too different from any previous portrayal of Sonic in English because modern sonics personality is garbage. Booms sonic personality is one of the few things i like about that version and roger fits like a block in a square peg
What a cringe fucking image, I'm a classicfag and I'd rather shake hands with the boosters than you nasty fucking adventure incels. Fuck off.
Cameron Allen
Correction, that but subdued. What makes Classic Sonic cool is that he's a mascot like Mario but not as plucky. He's got a refined nature with a little confidence that makes him stand out. Think Adventure/Modern Sonic as a more direct version of Classic Sonic's cool factor.
Not a single Classicfag would say this. Nice try, Boostshitter.
Austin Miller
Cope, Adventurecel. I don't like the boost games that much but I enjoyed them a hell of a lot more than your dated garbage.
William Gutierrez
Sonic has always been a self aware wize cracking dude.
They just updated him to be the modern day equivalent.
Andrew Hughes
Not even, only the west pushed for that. CD Sonic seemed like Japan took the concept of American Sonic and molded it with their take on the character. That's how you do a cool mascot without being so hammy about it, and I liked Adventure Sonic.
Samuel Ramirez
>CD Sonic seemed like Japan took the concept of American Sonic and molded it with their take on the character. That's how you do a cool mascot without being so hammy about it, and I liked Adventure Sonic.
What changed after Sonic Adventure 2?
James Fisher
Nothing, but I said Adventure Sonic to signify that timeframe. Modern Sonic isn't the same as Adventure Sonic, especially if you look at Colors compared to Unleashed.
Juan Ross
>especially if you look at Colors compared to Unleashed.
Explain this
Julian Wright
so basically, sonic needs to be less Adam Sandler, and more like Bruce Lee
The writing for starters. Unleashed's writing seemed liked it was on par with the past titles at the time. Colors was...interesting to say the least in comparison. Of course the writing isn't reflective of the game's quality, but I figure it's a nice way to put each part of Sonic in its own category. SEGA then also isn't the same as it is today.
Parker Davis
the truth is that Sonic is by default a franchise largely defined by what the corporate executives want: "Innovation", impressive graphics and following trends. Not only that but Takashi Lizuka is a fucking autistic edgelord hellbent on putting his insane ideas onto every game instead of focusing on doing what everyone knows what works and what doesnt.
Every sonic game that was shit had all of the above: some stupid gimmick, trying and failing to follow modern trends, Lizuka's autism and muh gwapix.
Meanwhile, every sonic game that was GOOD were the ones where they did what they knew what worked and improved on it.
unfortunately, as much as I like this franchise(been a sonic fan since I was a kid), I understand that it will NEVER reach its full potential thanks to retarded business executives always taking the worst fucking decisions, sheer incompetence, and since the japanese job market is so favored to older employees, Lizuka will never go away. SEGA is trying so hard to ride on sonic mania's tail of sucess but everyone knows that a disaster is about to come(the most recent one being the sonic movie), and there's nothing we can do about it without literally killing the business executives in charge and putting someone like Taxman in charge of Sonic Team.
it really is a shame, Sonic in it's concept sounds really fun, and games like Sonic Utopia, Mania, 3&K, SRB2, Colors, Rush, Advance 2 and some others really show what can be accomplished if only the developers gave a shit and were allowed to do what literally anyone that isn't a fucking retard would do in regards to how the game should play and feel.
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most mismanaged franchise of gaming history and will continue to be for years to come with no way to stop. So at this point I'd do nothing but laugh at it, and enjoy the few good pieces that falls out of it sometimes.
/thread sonic only worked in the 90s because it was MADE to work in the 90s. everything after was pure downhill
William Baker
It isn't all Iizuka's fault you fucking moron. Morio Kishimoto and Shun Nakamura are far worse than him.
Nolan Johnson
What seems pretty odd about this is there have been plenty of decently reviewed 3D Sonic games. I'd understand if these games were consistently ranking below 60 on metacritic but that doesn't appear to be the case.
