I either interpreted it as the baby being a bit meta and being able to see everything that happens in third person, thats why the cuts in the trailer are the baby blinking. So maybe the player is the baby. Its definitely somewhere at the start of the game, then something goes wrong and Mads has to leave the baby, thats why is he looking for him in one of the earlier trailers. Or Sam was one of the original Bridge Babies and Mads is his dad. But there is propably something else going that im missing right now.

I see it as like a quantum baby. Like that baby Mads is talking to, is the same baby as all of the other ones and that's why he's able to see the other side, as he's like a bridge and is 'stranded' to all of the other baby pod babies. There's obviously a lot more to be considered tho.

The babies are pulled through from a parallel dimension or the past by the scientist 'Mama'. The baby works as a buffer and early detection system for the creature's and time rain effects. Norman Reedus's funky fetus just happens to be his past self/double, making it unique and granting him better survival and efficacy out in the field.
