There’s also an archive of some really good tutorials on anti-aliasing, fighter sprites, chibi fighter sprites, etc etc that were wiped off the internet years back, worth browsing through: mega.nz
it's nice, too bad everyone just uses 3d now
I dislike how many indie pixel games have shit pixel art. But there's nothing wrong with it.
Shin_shiros is amazing.
On the topic, do you guys like this kind of isometric urban spriting style? Most people probably see it and instantly think habbo, but I still like it, and honestly I liked it a lot back with habbo too.
Depends on the colors used.
Here's another. It's not so much just being isometric, but sort of bright and futuristic. I like it.
This one looks good, but the car feels out of place.
This stuff is so detailed and high res it doesn't even start to look like pixel anymore.
I know it is but I don't get why they just don't go full load and just make it normal.
I agree, this one's probably better.
Pixel art looks really crisp by nature, that might be why.
Pixel art is just another painting style, like digital, pointillism, etc. Some artists want go beyond what normal pixel art is capable of.
Deceiver for example.
Stuff like that looks so good
Reminds me of snes shadowrun.
I like Tea Basiras stuff. Still waiting on that Suika game
They work amazingly well for horror games and point'n clicks.
I like to see GOOD pixel art in games. SNES tier at minimum. If it looks like a NES game it goes into the trash. Pixel art gets a bad rap because of all the garbage tier pixel art. I've actually seen people unironically praising Celeste's artstyle. Like... The fuck? That game is the definition of pixelshit. It looks like a NES game with better backgrounds. But give me something that looks like Katana Zero and now we're talking. Speaking of that, is Katana Zero worth it for the price? I'm interested because the artstyle looks good but I've heard it's pretty short.
pc-98 had great high-res pixel art. A shame most of it was porn.
The PC-98 stuff confuses me. I read that dithering was vital to art design for those games due to some technical limitation, and that it was this incredibly laborious process that would be extremely hard to replicate now, but in practice I don't get what separates it from the plain old dithering in any pixel art we have now.
I made this recently.
My head hurts.
Metal Slug is peak pixel.
That's because you're seeing the whole level. Old games have stages bigger than that, the camera is focusing on a small part.
Pic related is also a camera pan
True, that's how it works for shoot 'em up stage backgrounds too. They look too high res almost when you put them in a single picture.
Pretty sure that's high res art and not actually pixel art, but yes. CAVE left pixel art in their backgrounds really quickly, and event he bigger bosses
Oh, I guess you're right. I know the previous DDPs were pixel though at least.
The second donpachi game specifically had really beautiful pixel art, wish I had some rips of the backgrounds.
Why erotic pixel art is more interesting than normal erotic art ?
Can you actually get a job doing pixel art?
Yes
You just need to go back in time
Radio the Universe is coming out sometime this year according to the dev
pixel art is so ugly
Fucking nice
Any tip for correctly making clusters in pixel art ?
How do i make pixel art? Please help
Making clusters is just pixel art in general, yeah?
Try the first link in the first reply, it's very good.
So what is better to learn; pixel, or low-poly?
speaking of low poly, there will be low poly in this game too
sketchfab.com
Both
Usually no. There is a lot of good (as in visually appealing) pixel art, but these days its so commonly used that it just feels lazy. They dumb down the game, they dumb down the graphics, and we get pixel platformer #8567329.
There are games that have a style to their pixel art I appreciate over others. Sword and Sworcery, Downwell, Hyper Light Drifter, minit,.
Kingdom: Classic.
It has pixel art that I like and the gameplay is quite good.
>I only play mainstream indie games
I'm a retard, can somebody explain to me what dithering is in a simple way?
instead of using a new colour that's in between A and B, you use dots of A and B to give the illusion of it being a shade in between them
thanks user i asked a friend who does pixel art and he talked for an hour without telling me what dither was.
Patterns
is that dragon quest?
is aseprite a good software for pixel art? I have a wacom but i have trouble using it it's so uncomfortable, I can do better with a mouse but people tells me that a tablet is the only way to go but really I don't know if it's the tablet or me but it fucking sucks
I use GraphicsGale for pixel art.
I know pixel art is basically clusters, but, when I try to make cluster they don't look natural .
Aseprite is great. But I have a Surface Pro to draw on. If you can get a good deal on Clip Studio it's got great brushes for pixel art
love this kino
Try reading the links in the first post, they cover the fundamentals well.
Shitty and outdated. The only kind of faggots that cling to pixelshit are nostalgia/DUDERETRO fags.
Is there any downside to ending the day during a meltdown?
what game?
Yes, although you'll have to work freelance for a good while. It's a niche after all.
Aseprite is fantastic. Animating in it is really easy.
I had the same problem, my shitty little wacom wasn't cutting it for pixel art, so I used to work with a mouse until I got a screen tablet. Eventually switched to a screen tablet and haven't looked back since. It's faster and much lighter on the wrist.
you guys should try piskel, I played around with it today trying to copy a megaman sprite.
Good thread.
Please no
I miss the gameboy advance so much.
He needs to do more of her.
This had to have taken at least four hours.
I thought this game was about zombies, not terminators.
Thanks for this
You all came back, huh?
Why?
I wanna fuck this niglet
Retarded zoomer
You mean the webm? Eh, not really...? He didn't even put any construction in, which he probably should have done. Even with a mouse, that looks like a
Anyone have some pixel art that they made themselves?
Yeah, but im not very good, but ive been trying to make pixel art everyday
This way too long
...
Actually, can you upscale it? Its a bit too small to see
>that wizardry at 1:27
what the shit
I don't make it nearly as often as I used to, but yeah.
Damn, this is really good user
Done a while back, just so out of practice that I don't really care much.
That's pretty rad, dude.
what was that game again ? i remember following it at the same time that salt & sanctuary was being developped.
(too bad s&s looks like dogshit btw)
what do you mean with screen tablet? a shitty regular tablet or a drawing tablet with screen?
it’s a warrior from DQ3, but fanart
Does anyone else use aseprite? Do you know how to dither without having to place it dot per dot?
Here's an old one
Thats some good shit user
I don't know about Aseprite, but GraphicsGale has a patterned brush that lets you make dithering without doing it dot by dot.
Maybe look for something like that in Aseprite?
Damn, dude.
That's pretty good good.
Game just got translated the other day, go play it, its great
The latter. It speeds up the process a lot.
Where can I play this?
AFAIK this is the only way
Make a custom brush from a selection with Ctrl-B
Oh shit, this is actually really useful, thanks a ton man
Both. Low poly models + pixel art textures.
Monster Hunter.
Minish Cap is the comfiest zelda dont @ me
Soul
God, the GBA was such a pure breeding ground for incredible pixel art. The specs and time period were just right, pixel art was still very much required, yet the industry had matured enough to know exactly how to handle it. There will probably never be anything like it ever again as far as consoles go. Sad how developers for DS and subsequent handheld games often opted for low quality jpegs just because they could.
Pixel art is soulful when done right.
so what is easier to learn pixel or low poly?
best resources for both?
DS was for low poly what GBA was for pixel art
Pixel art is far easier but it's time consuming and still requires a ton of artistic knowledge, and is subject to much higher standards. Low poly requires more technical knowledge in addition to artistic knowledge, but it's at a kind of a "anything goes" stage in its life, and there's a possibility it will stay that way if it never experiences a boom like pixel art did.
Any one know of any decent pixel sprite games.
This ones been my fave for a while.
Maybe I'm in the minority here but I don't like pixel art. It just looks dated to me. Plus 2D games mostly tend to be platformers and feel samey.
I much prefer 3D polygonal graphics, especially with shaders or a unique art style.
Hello FP2 dev, your game is my most anticipated of the year. Release date fucking when?
Is that Zelda Classic quest? If so, which one?
Everything about early 90s PC-Engine games turns me on. I fucking LOVE how cosy the backgrounds are, full of obsolet tech and stuff. Reminds me of being a kid, but I'm hornier.
is there a easy place for translated pc98 games and how to play them?
Fuck off, zoomer
I love this kind of stuff. You're right that the first thought I had was Habbo, but that's not a bad thing. A city sim in this style would be amazing.
I was born in 83. Games have gotten better since the days of endless shovelware mascot platformers and adventure game bullshit
No you weren't. Fuck off zoomer.
I like this one a lot.
The pixel/2d look was like 70% of the reason I played trickster online for so long back in the day. I wish there were more 2d mmos like this. I tried wakfu but it was boring as heck
i do like me some good pixel art but these random anime girls do nothing for me. seen one, you've seen 'em all.
Don't know about the rest of the game but those backgrounds are clearly just regular art, not pixel art
Sorry mods didn't notice the tiddy
it is, but all the monsters/characters were pixel
So it seems, makes me miss Ragnarok Online not really, even the good MMOs are really hot trash, but pretty comfy graphics though
The game mockup ones are always cool
This reminds me of seeing a mock-up of a GBA-style Halo game in Electronic Gaming Monthly. My gullible child brain thought it was real and I got unreasonably hype for absolutely nothing
now this is soul
