I've used her in both capacities fairly often. Most of the time, if I am using her as a party member, I like to control her though. Some of the most satisfying healing I've ever played in an RPG, MMO or otherwise. I wish she had better end game skills, but they seem to have thought that it would be a good idea to give her ambush damage up. I guess the idea was that after the Blade reveal, you would be using her like that from now on. I kind of regret not doing so after my first playthrough. Happening to me as well. Played for ~140 hours on my first playthrough including some post game. Then started NG+ and bought the DLC because I was having too much fun with the game.
Got to the part in the story where you can access challenge mode and tried a few of them but they were impossible since I leveled down for NG+ so I went back to blasting through the NG+ story and got burnt on the game after a few more hours. Then I just lost interest. Picked it up a couple weeks ago very casually and chipped through to the last chapter of the story and hit 150 hours but I just can't get myself to get back into it right now. It sucks and I wanted to at least play Torna.

Even before those, the game makes it pretty clear that Nia has a lot of faith in Pyra and is growing closer to Mythra. They aren't her rivals in her love of Rex and it's refreshing to see that. If anything the game makes it more like Nia projects her love for Rex onto them and encourages their pursuit, even at her own expense, as she believes that Rex could never love her since she's a flesh eater. Their relationship won't change how she feels and no one blames her for that. Much better then the typical loser of the relationship either going crazy, cutting ties, or even being killed to justify the main pairing. She's just treated like a normal person.
