I've come to realize that i don't prefer any particular kind of weapon, all i want is for it to be good and fun. I do dislike the giant and cumbersome weapons meme, those are always at the bottom of my list. Ninja Gaiden is consistently the series with the best melee weapons i have played, there's a lot of them, they are all fun and it has interesting stuff besides "sword".
As for firearms, it's basically the same, though i will say that playing the RE series made me appreciate shotguns a lot more.

I hate when games decide that their polearm can't just be a polearm and has to also have xyz gimmick.
DMCV Dante's sword is just a sword. But the polearm? Nah that's three seperate weapons crammed into one moveset.
Monster hunter's insect glaive? Not just a glaive, half its moveset and mechanics are about chucking this dumb bug around.
Dauntless' war pike? Nah, all its specials are about being a damn gun.
Staves and polearms deserve respect.

Cerberus in DMC was nunchaku (well more like a keychain) first, all that stuff that was added is new. They should have been their own weapons with a proper moveset though.
In NG2/RE the Chinese quarterstaff gains flailing weight bits at the ends when upgraded fully, does that bother you?

yup. you have to buy it from the armory. It is fully automatic and good at chewing through less armored enemies. Doesn't work so well on shielded secreta units, but takes care of their psychic clones.
