Forced update will happen if you don't turn off the PC much. If you're turning it off every night, then yeah, it won't happen.

That said, the fact that you can't opt out of updates, or even really choose when to install them (even if its just a few days later, to make sure that the update isn't fucked) is absolute bullshit. I use W7 for AutoCAD, and nothing else. Honestly, it's really slow compared to Mint (and I know Mint is considered pretty bloated by Linux standards).

I keep an old laptop running W7, simply because I need to back up my iPhone on occasion. I think it has Core Duo, and 2GB of RAM. It's slow as shit, but I only need to backup my phone once every year or so.

Not who you were responding to, but I use AutoCAD for my work, so I understand the need to use Windows in order to get work done. But the number of people who make money using Sony Vegas, Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc COMBINED are well under 1% of the population. The vast majority of people have no need or desire for those programs (and the vast majority of those who don't need it for work would still prefer to get most of those programs on a Macintosh).

Those programs aren't really a good reason to justify most people sticking with Windows.

Almost every legacy Firefox addon has been ported to webextensions. Contrary to popular belief it is actually far more robust than chromium's extension system and has just about everything at this point. Actually, that's not true. A W7 and W10 computer, with the same exact specs, typically have W7 at about the same as W10. Most people think it runs faster because they first experienced W10 with an upgraded PC.

Maybe it has better support for the drivers it installs automatically, which would still be a point in its favor. I've used it, but haven't tested it in that regard.

I only went to 10 because I assumed it was gonna be better than 8.1 (it was) and at that time windows 10 was the only place to get DX12 kinda like how vista was the only place to get DX10. I can understand the mentality behind what you're saying, but I would say that MS abandoning W7 is actually the reason to abandon Microsoft entirely. My reasoning for this is simple: W7 really doesn't need much anymore, simply security updates which are easy enough to port to W7 from W10. They are killing support for W7 not because of lack of UAC (like XP), which is a very important security feature, or because nobody is using it (like Vista), but because they want to push their customers onto their datamining platform or potentially suffer consequences. That's them telling their customer base, "Fuck you, get in line with us or have security risks." To me, the answer to that is, "Fuck you, now you get nothing from me. No email client, no office income, no search engine use, no OS money. Literally nothing."

I used Mint and it spontaneously developed a bug where Steam stopped working entirely and could not be uninstalled through normal means. In fact the package manager stopped working entirely because of it. I had to type something in the shell to get it uninstalled. Games also had problems working correctly. Risk of Rain required some shell shit, but even that didn't work and I couldn't play it at all.

Fair point. Not to be insulting to either of us, but I graduated HS in 2005, being raised my whole life on an Office that culminated in Office 2003. While in college, I had the opportunity to try out Windows 2007. I hated it, and stuck with Office 2003 until I made the switch to Mint.

I can relate to Libre Office a lot (it's very similar to Office 2003), but I can totally understand why someone used to Office 2007 and above would be hesitant to use it, as well as the Google options.

If you are not one of those retards who constantly tinker with shit and just set up the OS to your liking during Week 1 and then go on doing the usual shit with media and Internet, and if you aren't one of those retards who updates instantly as soon as one is available instead of waiting a month to get the full info from the userbase because Linux doesn't force updates, you will have a more stable system than even Windows 7.
