A lot of Square's earlier games were awesome, but for the ability to keep drawing me back to play/reinstall on a regular basis, it's a close toss-up between Diablo 2 and HoMM3.

Def Jam: Fight for NY. The sound work and animations just seem to mesh well to me. But I especially love the sound work.

Burnout 3

Devil May Cry 3.
Chrono Trigger is a good pick too OP.

Yiff City 2: The Fast and The Furry

Hotline Miami 2

Probably Lost Odyssey.
I played a lot of the NES/SNES classics when they were new, and Lost Odyssey really just had a lot going for it, despite being stuck on a bad platform.
It had a storyline with legitimate twists and "didn't see that coming" moments. It had decent combat, with 'just the right amount' of new; front/back lines, rings/timing-based extras.
It isn't some perfect messiah of a game, but it really made a herculean effort to be something exceptional in a drought of dreck and trash being pushed. It was a noble effort to live up to the standards set by Chrono Trigger, early FF's, suikodens and the like, and I respect that greatly.

company of heros 2 or the og battlefront 2. ive wasted so many hours on both of them

Sure as fuck not Chrono Trigger

Playing it on PCSX2 as well. With the resolution turned up all the way it looks almost as good as most games these days thanks to the art style.

Sequel when?

Is it translated yet?

yeah, I agree but you can't compare to new games these days.
gameplayvalue is way higher now because there's so much doable. only problem is that no big dev tries to pump out games with exceptional gameplay.

Castlevania

No, and I wouldn't hold your breath considering the length of the script and the fact that MG still haven't released sengoku.

That's because it was European. It's absurd that it's so ignored because of that, but kids from then never played it.
Fucking great game, I imported a brand new copy in the day and installed a 50/60 hertz switch on my SNES so I could play it

The combat is gimmick shit. The story is told through non-fucking-stop dialogue scenes of two characters talking back and forth that happens basically every time you move to a different screen. The story itself is mediocre and doesn't even try to address everything unless you feel like going back through the whole game to collect secret reports (because Nomura thinks that's how you're supposed to tell a story). Drop rates for late game stuff is terrible, and a lot of the music gets repetitive. Where did the meme that this game was good start? It's just another rehash of Nomura's basic ideas set against a backdrop of "The magical land of Shibuya" , which in reality is just a fucking shopping district and not some mecca of intermingling human ideas and emotions like the game pretends it is. The game has almost nothing going for it except for half the music and Beat's story.

Oh? Is this ok? I bought it from a bargain bin and literally never opened it. I thought it looked sub-par just from the art, but I have no real issues with basic artstyle

in terms of opening up a discussion on good games in a positive way, how would you have done it?

And literally nothing else exists like it. And it’s insanely customizable and fun to boot with tons of combat options and crazy amounts of ways to change up the difficulty.
>The story is told through non-fucking-stop dialogue scenes of two characters talking back and forth that happens basically every time you move to a different screen.
Is this your first JRPG or something? You do realize that you can just fast forward through the game after you beat it for the first time, right?
>The story itself is mediocre and doesn't even try to address everything unless you feel like going back through the whole game to collect secret reports (because Nomura thinks that's how you're supposed to tell a story).
So suddenly replayability is suddenly a bad thing? And Nomura didn’t even write the story, you stupid fuck.
>Drop rates for late game stuff is terrible, and a lot of the music gets repetitive.
You do realize that you can buy items to increase the drop rate as well as level down to increase it even more. Compared to most JRPGs, this is a godsend. I was able to get the late game equipment just fine in my first playthrough, sounds to me that you’re just bitching for the sake of bitching. Oh, and you can actually change up the nudism
>Where did the meme that this game was good start?
It’s not a meme when people agree that it’s good, you contrarian fuck.
>The game has almost nothing going for it except for half the music and Beat's story.
And the combat. And the story. And the music. And the character development. And the aesthetic. But sure, whatever helps you sleep at night, bud.

very hard to pick, but the first things that come to my mind are tf2, terraria and cave story

There are lots of games I think highly of, but they're vastly different to the point that I can't really compare them.

It's not. It's more of an RPG than Final Fantasy XIII, I'll say that much. The Final Fantasy X composer was responsible for the game's soundtrack.

>And literally nothing else exists like it.
>It's different so it's good!
Stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard.

>Is this your first JRPG or something?
I guarantee I've played more jrpgs than you have. I even learned moon so I could play untranslated ones and play new ones before the localization came out. Even something like P5 has more variety in it's story telling than TWEWY. What other jrpgs have you run back and forth between a few small areas and railroad you with scenes of two characters standing opposite each other and spewing text like that?

>So suddenly replayability is suddenly a bad thing?
Are you fucking retarded? Writing a nonsensical story with 70% of the plot details literally written down on paper that you can't find in the main game is just shit design. On top of that, to get them all you have to redo all the dumb shit like equipping all one brand of clothes that you already did one, and that do nothing except waste a couple minutes of time.

>Nomura didn’t even write the story, you stupid fuck.
He was creative director and his game design choices absolutely bled through, you dumbass.

>Compared to most JRPGs, this is a godsend
The only jrpg with worse drop rate grinding than TWEWYs in terms of wasted time is maybe FFXII. You liking shitty grinding won't make it not shitty.

>It’s not a meme
It absolutely fucking is. The game is gimmicky shit that only a few retards praise.

>And the combat. And the story. And the music. And the character development.
The combat is shit. Period. Tapping the screen for gimmick controls is not good because you lose precision input and the game is balanced around that. The story is a lukewarm rehashing of Nomura's normal ideas and it's told incredibly poorly. Some of the music is good, but a lot of it is just repeated too much too fast. The only interesting character is Beat. The villains are all shit. Giving them accentuated quirks won't save them from being zeta-shit.

I don't know. Such questions keep me up at night.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, no. As someone who played P5, you couldn’t be any more wrong.
>Are you fucking retarded? Writing a nonsensical story with 70% of the plot details literally written down on paper that you can't find in the main game is just shit design. What exactly is nonsensical about a kid learning to full value others and their existence? Not to mention the game literally explains all of this shit to you in the reports.
>He was creative director and his game design choices absolutely bled through, you dumbass.
Creative producer, you stupid fuck. He only gave out the basic outlines, everything else was done by different people.
>The only jrpg with worse drop rate grinding than TWEWYs in terms of wasted time is maybe FFXII
>set level to 1

Wow, so hard. And, again, you have items to heavily mitigate the grinding you bitch so much about.

Sure thing, EOP.

>As someone who played P5, you couldn’t be any more wrong.
How fucking stupid can you be? P5 has dialogue, cutscenes, gives you dialogue options and gives you freedom in what you do when. Seriously, how impossibly fucking stupid do you have to be to think TWEWY's "Go to next screen, get dialogue text. Repeat" storytelling is more varied than that? You're out of your fucking mind.

You can't seriously think that Persona 5 has freedom do you user? All your responses lead to the dead same result in the end its the illusion of choice. I've just been observing how your taste could be so shit but what the fuck.

>Being different doesn't make it good. The combat is shit. Novelty won't change that.
>i-its bad because I say so!

> P5 has dialogue, cutscenes, gives you dialogue options and gives you freedom in what you do when. Seriously, how impossibly fucking stupid do you have to be to think TWEWY's "Go to next screen, get dialogue text. Repeat" storytelling is more varied than that? You're out of your fucking mind.
>comparing a console dungeon-crawler/ social sim to a handheld beat-em-up esque ARPG
Please tell me you’re not this dumb. Hell, fucking Devil Survivor, a handheld SRPG by the same company, has more meaningful choices than P5 considering how characters can actually die and stay dead as consequences for your fuckups as well as having different routes. And even then, P5’s storytelling gets drastically worse the more the game goes on, with Ann and Ryuji being prime examples. Not to mention how godawful the pacing is.

P5 let's you do things in different orders, choose who you date, tackle dungeons on different days and do different side activities. It's still very linear, but it has more freedom than TWEWY whose options start and end with the dark ramen shop, and everything else is nonstop, repetitive dialogue scenes. The reason I bought up P5 was that even something that linear had more choice and variety than TWEWY. The fact that something pretending TWEWY is good is actually trying to claim otherwise shows how fucking deluded TWEWYfags are about their shitty gimmick game.

>P5fag thinks he call other games shit
TWEWY and most SMT games can give you better and more engaging experiences than anything P5 can offer. The King of Bel route in Devil Survivor alone takes a giant on P5’s narrative when it comes to investment and meaningful choices.

Seriously, why are you so fucking stupid? Why are you pretending that me calling the combat shit means I think it was hard? It's braindead and boring.

>fucking Devil Survivor,
I brought up P5 as an example of a linear game that's bashed for linearity but still has more choice and variety than TWEWY. Why would you suddenly bring up DS? I'm really having trouble understanding how anyone can be this stupid.

And you think using an incredibly linear game to show how linear and boring the storytelling is in TWEWY by comparison somehow doesn't count because it makes you mad? And you still have explained why you brought up SMT. Did you just see P5 and get irrationally angry? You have shit taste. TWEWY has awful story telling and awful gimmick combat.

Solid tie between Ghost Trick and Skies of Arcadia

Skies of Arcadia is my favourite game of all time because it gave me a feeling of adventure that no other game has ever given me. I loved the world, characters, music, story, and hell even the combat. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did but it's a game that truly speaks to me on a deep level that I adore it.

Ghost Trick is different, I love everything about it from the graphics, puzzles, music, gameplay and especially the story, but the game didn't make me feel any different like Skies did, rather it's just a solid game in every aspect and I honestly think it's a perfect game in my eyes. Skies has flaws, but I can't find any in Ghost Trick except it has no repeatability because I played it on release 8 or so years ago and can still remember everything about it.

One of those two for sure.

Deus Ex

Each stage is a character having to do some sort of wacky task, but that's just the backdrop. You essentially get thrown an assortment of vaguely-themed "microgames" that last ~5 seconds each, and you have only a handful of failures allowed per stage. It's a completely irreverent series that revels in being weird but in doing so does something that nothing else really does. Each game also feels different because they try to incorporate some new gimmick that usually works well, generally one of the the features of the given Nintendo system it's on.

Golden Sun 1 and 2 left a deep mark on me that I always use to measure how good a game is.

EXCELLENT taste

Probably Persona 4 Golden. Even as time goes on and I recognize more of its flaws it just hit me in the right way at the right time that I don't know if any other game I play for the rest of my life will be able to replicate. Love the atmosphere of the setting and the dynamic between the main cast. Even if most of the party members aren't super interesting on their own compared to the ones in Persona 3 for example they definitely have one of the best group dynamics of any RPG I've played.

Good post, been meaning to play both of these games someday and seeing this makes me want to move them up a bit on my priority list, especially Skies of Arcadia.

Based as fuck, Red Dead Redemption is garbage though & BOTW is extremely lackluster for a Zelda game

Runescape proabably. No other game has the same feeling of freeform exploration and interaction with the world combined with such high-quality quests largely due to the ultima-like mechanics where you can use objects with other objects or things in the environment. Unfortunately RS3 is godawful for a myriad of reasons but OSRS is still fine.

she was so cute, why couldn't we choose her?

Good taste. Skies of Arcadia's only flaws that keep it from topping Chrono Trigger in my mind are the awful encounter rate and the nearly useless magic system. The story, characters and setting were top-tier JRPG fun, though, and all the little spots of polish in the game like adaptive boss fight music, hidden discoveries, and ship crew recruitment really solidified it as one of my favorite games of all time.

Super Mario Galaxy is the most polished gaming experience ive ever had.

You posted it.

They're both fantastic, but I'd say watch both the trailers and see for yourself which one sparks the most interest for you.

youtube.com/watch?v=MHtgMKbAJvc
youtube.com/watch?v=2OxMfwK7XKM

Skies is a little tricky to play, the DC version has a worse encounter rate but vastly superior music, whereas the GC version has a lower encounter rate and additional stuff, but terrible music. I'd recommend the DC version just because the butchered music in the GC version really urks me even if the encounter rate is low. Ghost Trick can be played on a DS with ease or on your phone, whichever is easier.

Thanks, I still found the encounter rate in FF7 to be worse to be honest, Skies never pulls one step encounters on you whereas FF7 loved that shit. The ER never bothered me much in Skies and I played the PAL version, I think I was only really pissed at it right at the end of the game when I had no idea where to go and was forced into battles every 20 steps or so.

I still need to beat Lavos to actually "finish" CT. Got to that fucker 10 years ago and then lost my save.
