It's not black and white. Old rpgs WERE flawed, but some aspects were better than they are in modern rpgs, and these aspects are often good enough to forget about other flaws. Nu-rpgs are often pretty mediocre, they're desperately trying to be a "golden classic", but a lack of creativity and actual professionals make them, you know, bootleg copies of old rpgs. But, again, there are some mechanics and very interesting details in nu-rpgs that actually feel fresh and attractive for a player, even an old one. I wish nu-rpgs were better than they are now, but I also know nothing's gonna change because devs are shit. And that's sad.

Ekun, Jubilost and Linzi were the only half decent companions in the game. The rest were so bland and forgettable they make those three look good, even though comparing them to any other RPGs companions makes it apparent just how shit the entire cast is.

I just want a somewhat generic D&D style world that actually decides to use it's massive list of races and monsters. Linzi was just a basic bard with a little bit of "Halfings steal" thrown in. That's about it, but just that still made her a better companion than everyone else aside from Jubilost and Ekun. It was really dumb how she got turned into a book, though. The end game was such a drag I didn't care about anything that happened, I suppose it was intended to be a dramatic moment or something but I genuinely didn't give a fuck what happened and only finished the game to get the sense of completion.

They're all garbage that add nothing to the story and setting of the game, and are a cheap and artificial way to make the player feel like his choices in character creation are having an appreciable influence on the story and world, rather than just being what they are, a few extra sentences or some changed dialogue. All of the classic RPGs never had any of that shit, just create a good story with a compelling goal for the protagonist.

It still blows me away that the BG series, Fallout 1, and Torment are still the gold standard for this genre. Can we just get ONE modern game made that meets or exceeds that standard? Probably not, since all studios seem to be interested in doing is attempting to reel in nostalgia fags rather than just straight up creating a new, good RPG. It's honestly disgusting that a sequel to a series that is completely done and over, BG, is what we might be getting next.

Those three games are the gold standard. Aside from, say, Wizardry or arguably Gothic, that's it. Those three games were popular enough that their corpses are still being cannibalized to this day, and Divinity 2 was the closest thing we got to a genuinely good new RPG in two decades. If you were into computers at the time you were probably into computer games, and if you were also into writing it was an obvious career choice. Now it means being into the absolute lowest dregs of media and these are the people that write for games now. Writing for video games is what you do when you're too shitty to write for movies or TV.

Kingmaker was genuinely good but the load times and overall bugginess at launch really turned me off.
I reinstalled it the other day and they happened to announce the enhanced edition that same day.

There's a couple well balanced mods that change the magic/armor system so you can actually stun people without having to completely remove their armor first and whatnot
That being said, it's really easy to get completely OP if you just spec fully into the damage stat for your corresponding class, I prefer fire magic with the death laser and such but a two handed berserker thing with 100% crit rate does a gorillion damage each turn as well, one shotting bosses left and right

DoS2 is a great game, but I don't like how the player made character is essentially an after thought playing second fiddle to the premade characters. I always hated the J"RPG" narrative style where the RPG stands for stats, rather than actual roleplaying.

In that case, wait for a few months, play whatever else in the meantime, and see if you can play a catfolk slayer when it drops.

But there are also non-companion npcs that you find. They also talk too, they just don't have their companion quest. I'm not sure how many companions there are though.

It's pretty legit if you are into mechanics-heavy RPGs. It's the closest thing to BG3 you'll probably ever get and the mechanics are extremaly faithtful to Pathfinder tabletop. It had a rough start, but most bugs have been squashed at this point. And it has cute tiefling virgin waifu to romance.

It wasn't. The overall story was mediocre but many of the unique characters stood out which is why many confuse the two. Humorous, dysfunctional characters like the megalomaniac Tiax or the brain damaged Minsc still stick with me 20 years later. Many characters were written well but the main story was kind of meh.

It's going to be D:OS 3 with boring, long drawn out combat, regardless. I like turn-based games but Larian really went all out from a watching paint dry standpoint. The user ITT that compared every random battle to attacking an entire town in Fallout 1/2 isn't too far off. Every trash mob encounter shouldn't last as long as an epic boss fight.

A lot of the characters in Kingmaker were boring, though. The only one I like is Nok-Nok because he's hilarious--especially when he sets up a goblin quarter in your capital.

Funny thing is, she's a direct ripoff of Rovena - one of the iconics from The Dark Eye tabletop. I am still surprised Ulysses never bothered with a lawsuit.

I love most about it, except the most important part; the actual gameplay. Same reason I could never get into PoE and the like. Taking what should be turn-based, but making it real time with pause is just not for me. I can never make spells hit properly, because the character will line itself up stupidly, and by the time he casts it, the other characters have killed a guy and start walking in front of him and getting the full blast of the spell, when in reality I assumed he would cast it sooner.
It's just a general mess. Wish they had made it turn-based.

There's seriously some kind of fucking disease at the heart of the mainstream western gaming industry man, and I don't even mean the progressive bullshit. It's like all the writers are the same person. None of them write anything surprising or interesting. It's all the same cookie-cutter bullshit.

I can't even put my finger on exactly what the problem is, but it becomes noticeable after a while when playing non-'western' games. Even just the CDPR, which is hardly revolutionary or especially inspired, the writing in their games feels different somehow, like a person wrote it not a computer program. Even, like, having this dwarf king casually insulting you to your face feels like a scene that'd never happen in a western game, or if it did then it'd be some overly verbose garbage, eschewing natural-sounding colloquialisms in favour of some obtuse local language the writer specifically invented (highlight the words to learn what they mean! great modern feature in our modern game!) for their totally original new fantasy setting. And it's read like it was pulled together by an algorithm, like the writer was trying to impress his college professor or pad his wordcount, not write genuine dialogue.

Around half of his endings have him staying with you. Sure, they're based on failing to help his son... but I'm sure they'd find an excuse to bring him back regardless. There's too many endings where he's already with you.
There's less reason to bring Aloth back but I get the feeling they'll do it anyway and have him and Eder as early party members yet again. His romance epilogues point to that too- he either stays with you or hopes to reunite, it's less of a clear separation than the rest of the party.

The armor system sucks ass and ruins the game's combat. You've got three options if you don't want it to feel like a complete slog: go all physical, go all magical, or make a broken lone wolf build and breeze through the game. Better yet, don't bother finishing it, because it's not worth it.

Please for the love of god no. Was Beamdog pissing on the grave of original games not enough? Larian actually can't make a coherent narrative. I mean BG wasn't exactly a shining example of creative writing, but at least it was consistent and enjoyable for what it is, Larian rewrites and retcons their own setting every fucking game, throw arounf cliches like it's supposed to automatically make the game old school and cool, they have almost supernatural ability of making every dialogue cringeworthy and boring even when compared to fucking nu-Bioware writing. Every Divinity after Divinity 2 reeks of tumblr, le ironic memes and complete, utter lack of anything resembling self-awareness. It's like reverse self-awareness, where developers actively mock you for paying attention, because fuck off, here's some pretty colors and le witty dialogue. Not a single fucking character is able to talk normally, they either talk like edgy snarky teenagers, or like someone who never saw a movie or read a book, and so they think that everyone in fantasy speaks like it's fucking Hamlet.
And as evidenced by armor mechanics in DOS 2, Larian doesn't even understand what makes the gameplay fun.

Well, every single party member has the ability to bless terrain so that isn't really an issue. I do wish there were a way to get the Curse ability in the base game without having to be Sworn or wearing that shitty unique ring though

I hated what they did to the graphics with Ultima 8 though. I've still never played it more than some hour even though 7 is my favorite game of all time.
7 still looks good 27 years later.

I liked fucking around with blessed steam, necrofire, and other shit. The only part of it that got on my nerves were the places where the terrain could not be reliably purified because of voidwoken bleeding all over the place and having permanently cursed terrain that's a bitch to navigate

I tried playing Kingmaker and dropped it because there were just too many buffs to remember and no way to automate them meaning I had to go through every character's entire spellbook pretty much every encounter and pick out all the buffs I'd need and I just couldn't be bothered after like the second chapter.

That's a common problem with a lot of tabletop games turned video games they usually have way to many spells that all do pretty much the same thing and they could really benefit from boiling those down.

Just do a telekinesis build. Find a ornate chest because they don’t have a health pool. If you can’t find an ornate chest, find a reinforced chest with like 5,000 HP. Then what you want to do is dump EVERYTHING that you’re not using into the chest. Make that bitch heavy as fuck. Then go stealth and drop the chest on enemies. If your shit is heavy enough you’ll one hit everything in the game.

It's not that hard to play dude. Weapons like swords do PHYSICAL damage to PHYSICAL armor(oh wow) Magic spells do MAGIC damage to MAGIC armor. If you dont have physical armor you can get crumpled quick or chicken clawed but if you run out of magic armor you're gonna be just as fucked to 1000 other effects.
Any character can cast a spell or swing a weapon it's your build and team comp that makes your team win.

I like the look of these elves why should every fantasy race look like 99% humans? I just wished all their gear didnt look native 247

Yes and no. It's a direct sequel, with some characters returning, but the story itself is completely disconnected and has nothing to do with anything. IMO story and companions were stronger in PoE 1. I wouldn't really recommend Deadfire for the story or writing, unless you like being frustrated by wasted potential.
