It's supposed to be a criticism of the most widely taught interpretation of quantum mechanics, which doesn't address where quantum mechanics turn into classical mechanics.
The idea behind it is that you could construct a device where the state of something in the macro world (such as a cat) is dependent on the state of a quantum system. Since quantum systems can be in a superposition of many states at once, this suggests a classical system could be as well. The idea that a cat can be in a superposition of being dead and alive at the same time is meant to sound absurd, and it's supposed to suggest that there are problems with the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics.
