Nintendo's fault with the Wii U wasn't innovation, it was doing jack shit with it and the naming didn't fucking help.

All they had to do was take DS/3DS games that were big hits and make next gen installments of them on the Wii U while also creating new games from flagship franchises. They did the later with Mario, Zelda, and Star Fox (though failed with that), but they didn't make games that really used your TV and gamepad screen together like their handhelds did.

I worked retail when it was announced, from then to release no one had a damn clue what it was. We didn't know until a month before demo units were set to arrive and we got blueprints for how our mods were going to be set to make room for the demo unit.

The WiiU was both a marketing failure and an undercooked idea that not even Nintendo utilized properly which was not the case with their other gimmick systems before and after.
They wrote off their losses and made the Switch, which is essentially the WiiU idea finalized. They now benefit greatly from it.
