To begin with you need the weapon ranks + seals to promote into those classes, and it'll take more investment (study time, weapon exp) to enhance anything but their strengths and gold for the seals, unless you're grinding in Normal.
That'll influence the 5 Customize skills you have access to, like in pic related and
serenesforest.net/three-houses/pre-release/skills/

Regarding weapon availability, magic can only be used by certain classes, and Gauntlets that can quad only by infantry/armors.

It's technically open-ended, and you can swap freely between your unlocked classes when the skirmishes before the field study demand it, but due to the nature of obtaining weapon EXP (and like E, E+, D, D+, C, C+, B, B+, etc.) it kind of steers you toward a certain role.
For example, Dedue of the Blue Lions. The 5/15 Famitsu article revealed his strengths are
>Lances, Axes, Gauntlets, Armor
and weaknesses
>Faith (Staves), Cavalry, Flying
He's shown as a Knight, and his Passive
>Liege's Shield - If user waits without acting, Defence +4 for one turn

Do we have any frame of reference for how restricted exp gain will be for these things? Is grinding only available in a certain difficulty or is there nothing stopping you from generating as much weapon exp and professor levels as you want before progressing?

Unlimited grinding is only available on Normal difficulty, all of the academy stuff is gated by an energy bar you gradually improve during the game but pretty much any action in the academy will expend some of your energy and thereby push you towards the next battle.

Sounds like it could actually be a good system that compromises between different playstyles, then, assuming it restricts you enough outside of Normal mode to enable meaningful decision making. It's different and not really what I'd prefer but at least now I can see the appeal and some promise in it.

Especially on repeat playthroughs when you have a new house to teach (assuming you tackle the other two) but the same field studies/end-of-the-month missions, so you consider which weapon ranks/classes you need by a certain date.

Three houses has been having a really weird effect on me. When I first saw the stuff on it and its character I was losing my mind with how shitty it was. Every character look like ass.

Now months later many of them have grown on me. I think Edelgard is a legit 9/10 design and many others I really like as well. Most of the male character look like fucking garbage still but the females have grown on me a lot and I actually am hopeful for the game.

Did anyone else find the 3H designs to be an acquired taste? Or is perhaps my own taste and standards being subconsciously lowered in attempt to like the game.

The ground is a huge model you're not supposed to pay much attention to, so they don't put a lot of detail into it in order to conserve resources, meaning low res textures and low poly models. This is especially apparent in FE because you only see the ground for very short cut-ins, so it's even less important for it to look good and even more important for it to be lightweight so it loads quicker.

Ok, stupid theory but TLDR: PM TTYD foreshadowed the future of FE fanbase

There were some weird things in that game's plot, and these things have a surprising similarity to things that would appear in future Fire Emblem titles like Awakening and Fates, often in bad contexts.
For example, if you think IS filling their games with a bunch of waifus who are all interested in the MC started in Awakening you're dead wrong. Every single female party member in The Thousand Year Door (and there's four of them) has a very obvious crush on Mario. To the point where it honestly gets eyeroll-worthy.
At the same time the asspully way that TEC, Lord Crump and Grodus are all alive in the epilogue despite common sense saying that they should have died mirrors Gangrel, Walhart, Emmeryn and Aversa in Awakening's endgame paralogues. This trend even returned in Super Paper Mario with Luvbi, Tippi and Blumiere. Those latter two were pretty vague though, and it's not very clear why they had to disappear to begin with. I'm not counting Squirps because while it was kinda presented as a death scene, him dying didn't make any sense and him just taking a nap was far more logical.
Fates had you do some weird dating and skinship thing inbetween chapters, The Thousand Year Door had Peach doing some minigames to date a sentient computer after each chapter ends; and unlike Fates these were mandatory.
Speaking of Fates. The localization controversy of that game caused has a clear precursor in the Vivian translation discourse. Let's just be happy that the internet wasn't as big in 2004 as it was in 2016.
Many of the more strange and unfortunate aspects of Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates can be directly traced back to Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Let's just be happy that IS hasn't removed all the new character designs from the new Fire Emblem games and replaced all the weapons with stickers and cards yet.

Chapter 4 is unfortunately an incredibly niche thing. It's an amalgamation of old 80s /m/ anime memes, so for an /m/fag like me I got a bunch of good laughs from it, but for someone not familiar that kind of stuff it probably doesn't make sense.
