Mahjong is the devil's game. It feels awful when I deal in and spend the whole game trying to climb out of the fourth place while everybody is winning quick hands and throwing the riichi stick on fourth turn, doesn't feel like anything when I'm second or third, and when I get first I can't help but think that I'm still in the red ranking points-wise because of my previous losses and the guy in 4th must feel like shit.

I usually hold on one irrelevant wind or dragon to have a safe discard in case someone else calls Riichi so I don't deal into an Ippatsu.
So I think those are the traps? Not sure though.

For example this hand, I could have called Riichi on the Haku but nobody was going to deal it because there's still 3 live Haku tiles, so calling Riichi on the Xia was a better option because there were already 2 xia on the discard pools and the guy on the East got the 3rd so it was "safe" to discard it because I couldn't use it as a triplet.

nah. suji is kind of a defense tactic that I have read that isn't as safe as ganbatsu defense but is still is pretty safe the basic framework is pic related it works like this: for example if one guy discarded 1 4 and 7 of same suit are safe against him/her. but I have seen a term here on these threads quite often called "suji trap" they basically exploit this tactic somehow.

it's the notion that people will generally want to have a ryanmen wait, it's required for pinfu and accepts more tiles than single waits so playing by suji lets you avoid pinfus at least if you're out of genbutsu tiles.

You'll probably be fine eventually. There are many rules / exceptions initially but they are all relatively simple. Once you remember most of them that's it.

Gold chests are a million miles better than silver. Jade chests apparently aren't much better than Gold, though, and the games cost a lot more, so I don't think they're worth it. Not that Jade is an option for me yet anyway, just going by what I've been told of the different drop rates.

No one is saying you can win every game. But you can try, and you will win a lot more by doing so instead of "damage control". Mahjong is game where huge reversals are commonplace, you there are plenty of opportunities to go for them as long as you haven't already given up.

If it actually took notes from other gacha games I bet the game would be a lot better. More interesting if people would use other characters and if there were more effects. Also as it is now it's basically impossible to roll the gacha without paying.

-will calling it make your hand ready really fast or still not so fast?
-are you in a position where it's early in the rounds and you're not behind on points? (e.g cant afford to progress the game with anything other than a big dick scoring hand)
