You need to talk first a lot of the time in mmos, user. You're EU right? Light or did you pick Chaos? Odin is a good server on light if you can speak english. Shiva for German. That said if you're too shy you need to work on it yourself. Also there was a xiv thread up already.

Can I fish in FFXIV? I played WoW when urged to by friends, but I spent a lot of time fishing rather than doing endgame content.

I made a surprising amount of friends just sitting around and fishing with the various little gadgets and toys set up for random passerbys to enjoy.

I've played FF14 up to 20ieth or so level before dropping it. The gear "upgrades" are just flat +1 to your stats compared to stuff you got from previous zone. No character customization and building nothing special to look forward to. The questing is dull as fuck and is just a prolonged tutorial for retards. I thought that the first instanced dungeon I'll get to explore will be somewhat interesting but nope, it's basic as fuck without any gimmicks or tactics. The game is very pretty so I'll give it that.
All in all I found FF14 an extremely watered down "by the book" theme park "MMO" experience without any special features or player freedom.

balmung is great but congested so you're better off rolling on Goblin or Malboro (both good servers) and visiting to Balmung whenever an RP mood strikes you

I had an alt there myself. You don't make money on balmung unless it's endgame relevant/new stuff at the start of new content. Lies only take you so far.

Fishing in XIV is unironically the hardest content in the game. Once you get high level you can start hunting Big Fish that are basically just for the ego boost of catching them and some sick titles, and the shit required to actually catch some of them is insane.

More on the subject of B4 costing no mana. The actual B4 tooltip lists its MP cost at 800. That being said, there is footage of BLM casting B4 at 0mp right after B3. So basically the tooltip and the demo build don't agree with each other. My guess is that the tooltip is wrong and will be updated somewhen before release.

Not him but you're straight wrong. Even before reaching cap it's super easy to make money as a Gatherer. Alumen, Gold Ore, shard seeds, Granite, Cobalt Ore, and Marble all sell fairly well still. Typically anything that sees heavy use in housing is a reliable seller here. Also Fleece is fantastic money.

I've got all my crafters 70 too and selling endgame stuff is actually the hardest. I've had Rakshasa weapons sit up there for two weeks.

Well, levels 1-50 in XIV are basically just a tutorial, and make up barely 20% of the game. It gets more engaging around level 30 when you've built up your base skill arsenal, but levels 20 and below are fucking nothing and show you nothing at all.

Their current approach is working considering the game's been on a pattern of steady growth for years now and the playerbase is only getting livelier. When such MMOs are only going to attract a niche, I'd rather make it a solo-coop RPG where said "niche" is actually a massive potential playerbase.

The classic community-driven MMOs were not actually superseded by these super streamined antisocial modern MMOs, but instead transformed into games like Minecraft of all things.
The always online MMO platform became irrelevant a decade ago. It is more tenable to make a game that can be played locally, with an economy that a solo player can establish among NPCs, or a server of people can establish together and make flourish. The hostile world they find themselves in becoming one they make into their cozy home over time.

Hilariously, almost none of the Minecraft-likes have capitalized on making their games more than just another blocky tree-punching game with survival mechanics and random empty landmass generators. They could be making actual worlds and start players off as adventurers with a bunch of established landmarks set apart by random terrain. Some of the most popular mods for such minecraft-likes are just that, turning them into more fully fledged coop RPGs.

Somehow I've gotten to the point where I habitually open up threads for this game and read about it and follow the news and updates despite not even playing it. I tried it 3 years ago and somewhat enjoyed it but never got past level 30 on multiple characters, and everything just felt like a waste of time. I think I must want to play it or I wouldn't follow it so closely, but the monthly sub model scares me and makes me not have much fun. The whole situation makes me feel silly and dumb.

Not that I'm aware of. There's always been the NPCs in towns that can direct you to another NPC with a quest via map markers but that's pretty much it I think. The Records of Eminence stuff can also directly point out where to go for more important quests such as job unlocks and whatnot via position(so really just giving you a vague idea of where the npc is, you still need to seek them out), but I honestly can't even recall when RoE was implemented anymore.

Start raiding and join a static. You'll be forced to be in close proximity with 7 other people who probably have their own friend group.
There's the chance it'll be an awful social experience and you'll never get in their good graces, but if you keep trying you'll find a group for you; I believe in you, user!

The other tanks look horribly slow though. PLD and WAR didn't really change and were always pretty slow paced, but DRK got its speed absolutely gutted
