I have mixed feelings about 1 and recommending people skip it. On the one hand, the story is great, and it sets up a lot of things for the next two games, but on the other hand, it's such a fucking slog to actually play. The combat is complete ass, and 3/5ths of the fucking game take place in a dreary swamp with infinitely respawning enemies. I would recommend something a different user in a different thread said, to play through the game, but mod it so that you can kill everything in one hit, so you can breeze through it, but still get the story experience.

They were far worse in 1, but only because of that quest that required you to go into a bunch of caves, but the game wouldn't let you go into the cave if there were enemies around, which there always were because drowners infinitely respawn, even if you had the trophy that made them not attack you. In fact, that trophy made it worse, since they'd run away, but would still be close enough to not let you enter the caves, so you'd have to take it off and go fight them.

As much as I love the witcher universe and the games, I agree that they probably shouldn't make anymore because what we got was the perfect trilogy and the perfect farewell to the cast of characters we knew and loved, and the series can literally only go down from here.
Plus, as long as Sapowski is still alive and his estate controls the property, I can see any future games being hindered financially. The Witcher 3 almost didn't happen. It only managed to succeed through the backbreaking work of everyone involved in it. If it had the added burden of severely reduced funding due to having to pay for future licenses of the property, the project may turn sour.

No, CDPR should focus on new IPs in the future. They can proudly put the Witcher trilogy in their belt as a perfect trilogy of games and a wonderful testament of Poland's creativity. 2 has real NPC cycles. You can actually follow some NPCs home at night, where they will go to bed. 3 doesn't have that.
2 (and 1 iirc) have real benefits to researching monsters, which grant bonuses to damage inflicted and the ingredient drops. 3 doesn't have that.
2 has writing on par with 3 but tells a more complex, more self-contained story. It's possible to play through TW2 once and not fully understand what exactly went on, and I'm not talking about stuff in alternate paths. I'm talking about things like Loredo's mother being the woman from the burnt down insane asylum etc.
2 (and 1) have ACTUALLY comfy inns, something 3 dropped the ball majorly on. In the base game, without something like Corvo Bianco, inns should have been something much more important and vital, where'd you seek to return to each night after a day of questing. Instead inns are like one room affairs without even any sleeping quarters. Granted you couldn't sleep in either TW1 or TW2 either, but the inns in those games actually felt like important buildings.

From what polish fags have told me the biggest issue is the word fuck, there is a very common phrase that literally translates to fuck but has different cultural connotations, so in English its gaudy as hell but is completely normal in polish.

If we consider the books and video games, Witcher 3 is almost a direct follow up from the last book. Witcher 1 and 2 are side plots that set up the political landscape but everything in Witcher 3 is a narrative sequel to the final book. Geralt is looking to reunite his family so he can retire but this requires him to go on a big epic quest, the Wild Hunt is still searching for Ciri after she escaped their world, Yennefer had her own journey after he death like Geralt did, Emhyr stopped wanting to fuck his daughter and just give her the Empire before it collapses under his rule, Djikstra is still politicking around. The books give massive context to witcher 3, more important to the story then witcher 1 and 2.

TW3 is basically a sequel to the books, TW1 and TW2 are so unimportant that they can be skipped completely if you read the books, you only need to know the gist of whats happened in the mean time. No, they don't address, Triss admits that she has been manipulating him for her own gain but Geralt just shrugs it off. TW3 basically gives the player on which life Geralt wants to pursue, his life from the books or the new life he created for himself in the game.

Then again Elder Scrolls and Skyrim are both very popular games which would suggest there is a way to make choices in games work

In Skyrim you name and make your own character while in the Witcher you play as Geralt of Rivia, a character who already has his own personality and opinions. So it becomes difficult to implement him in a game where they want to be able to make your own choices.

The Temerians wanted to kill Radovid, sure, but were content with letting Nilfgaard steamroll the remaining northern territories to do so; there was really no reason to believe Geralt would slaughter Dijkstra and his men to save the Temerians, who you were not really all that close to, personally. Depending on your playthrough of the previous game, Roche was either the guy you were forced to follow around to clear your name of regicide, or the dude you abandon while you try to clear your name of regicide; Ves was either a lady you slept with once, or simply one of Roche's soldiers whom you speak with once. And Thaler is the guy who once helped you recover your stolen shit, but depending on your playthrough, is a dude you let be killed by the Flaming Rose.

The choices Geralt makes are on his only morality vs his cynicism. Geralt is a huge moral fag, but knows on past experience that kind of thinking will get him into trouble, his butcher of blavikan title comes from murdering a entire group of people that he was just trying to do the right thing. Also him being a moral fag exposes that mutations don't actually wipe the witchers of emotions, which exposes the business. So you end up with choices of what Geralt wants to do and what he should not do, with it being incredible hard to decide which is the right call. TW3 implements Geralt regaining his memories and he has to choose which part of his life he prioritizes more, who he was or who he is now.

I think then the way to frame this would be in terms of depth vs width

Skyrim is very wide in story and as a result the story is shallow and mediocre.

A game like say Metal Gear Rising has more depth because a lack of choice allows the player to analyze Raiden as a character instead of as an avatar for the player.

Witcher tries to do both and suffers for it as a result.

I wouldn't say that, every choice Geralt makes is something he would do, everything is keeping in character with him. Geralt however isn't exempt from making poor decisions and will suffer for it. I view the games as the possible routes Geralt can take in life and the player is viewing which events they would like to see.

Largely the story doesn't change because most decisions are on a small scale. The game is a story about Geralt, a character full of conflicts and forced to make decisions he has to live with.
