Persona is half a dating sim and the other half is diet SMT combat on a lower difficulty.

P3 was too grindy with that fucking tower and was somewhat rushed during free time, so only SMT nerds liked it.

I think they perfected their casual formula with P4/P4 Golden. It was the ultimate scooby-doo romance sim with enough gameplay to classify as a game.

The traditional meaning of mature, not the modern capitalistic definition meant to act as a psychological trick to get people to buy their product when tits and blood are present. Mature subjects includes shades of grey in morality, actions that can be seen as a double positive or negative consequences, antagonists that aren't Saturday morning cartoons but actually have a philosophy, the protagonist not being proactive instead of reactive. Some examples.

Themes can range from, death, life, taking a life, the impact or use of religion in society, morality, how ones action impact society, to what extent, etc.

because dungeon crawling is boring, and smt contains a lot of it.
most smt fans keep allways highlighting the "combat this, combat that" while most jrpg fans rightfully dont care about combat and are bothered by grindy stuff.
hence, smt is to niche to really be popular

Persona is more of a wish-fullfilment fantasy that feels like it caters to giving you a comfy at the cost of being over-indulgant in character interactions and VN elements at the expense of the gameplay itself

SMT is more of a straight shot of "Oh shit, this is the motherfucking apocalypse" with less emphasis on overhanded story bits and more on the themes themselves. The VN bits are replaced with actual gameplay, and as a result, the mechanics themselves are deeper and more focused with a higher and more compelling challenge.

Gameplay is mediocre and the story itself is rather badly-paced from a big-picture perspective (it dawdles too much early on and then covers too much too fast at the end).
But it's got what you're looking for. It's a bit pretentious but not nearly as bad as critics say. Mostly it's just a side-effect of what seems to be a kitchen-sink mentality where any idea that seemed good they tried to figure out some way to cram it into the game.
But, despite all that, it has really good memorable human characters, solid themes, and an epic multi-generational story.
It's a shame the gameplay is kind of boring.

Tales of Vesperia has been pretty enjoyable

get zero and ao no kiseki, you can get it english patched with evo voice patch added,
they are even without playing the other games of kiseki some of the actual best Jrpg's

Xenoblade Chronicles X was pretty good. You can skip cutscenes so you can keep the action rolling. Bravely Default has a fun action system and the story is engaging.

I don't mind if a game has mediocre gameplay as long as the tone is solid, which from looking at some footage it seems very solid to me. I'll definitely check this out. Thank you.

There's not a lot you can get in english if you want that kind of stuff.
I guess if you're fine for more dramatic storylines you can play SaGa Frontier 2, all SaGa games have pretty intriguing stories and usually feature large, varied casts but Frontier 2 might be the best for your taste as it's more explicitly story focused than the rest of the series. The rest of the series bar the GB games offer a lot more player agency and tend to have a more Ultima-ish approach to game worlds, but with multiple main characters with their own stories, it's a very rich series in both gameplay and narrative context, despite being pretty minimalistic in the latter.
Vandal Hearts 2 is also a good choice and deals with what you want in a pretty decent manner, it's a good war story with abundant drama and various themes from redemption to accepting the mistakes of the past.
Front Mission has the typical 0079 mecha war story in spades, outside of FM3 you can just pick whichever you want and have a good time, 1, 2 and 5 have perhaps the best storylines, even if 1 is a bit primitive for today's standard it's not bad at all.
Langrisser games make a good job with spicing up their stories by having pretty good route systems that can let you see what happens based on your decisions, it's a more focused FE series in general when it comes to that and there's plenty of moral choices you can make and see where they lead.
Valkyrie Profile tends to have some interesting, albeit bitter storylines about morality, sin and the human condition in general, but they're all episodic in nature and strictly tied to the background narrative, so I don't know how much you'll enjoy it, some of those are pretty hit or miss as well.
Outside of these, there's JP only games like Zill O'll or some other little games with more generally mature narrative like Frontier Gate.

Outside of that you have various games from the SaGa series and its clones to Elminage which offer far better mechanics, depth and variety to anything SMT brought up to this day.

I hate phased combat for turn-based RPG. My favorite of those I've played is probably the ATB-without-the-realtime systems that use some kind of per-unit speed rating to determine turn order for each individual unit in the battle. It just feels far more organic to have each unit's turn come up individually than to divide up everything into phases.

The only time I like phased turns is for a real strategy game where you're actually a commander issuing orders to battalions and such, where the turn simulates some of the communication delay you might have in that situation. In a game where you're micromanaging individual heroes that seems pointless.

Thought I was the only one who played that game.

Press Turn is interesting compared to most turn based JRPG's, but it's truthfully overhyped. People like to pretend that it's the Magnum Opus of turn based gameplay, when it boils down to:
>Crit and you get more turns (Same goes for enemies)
>Miss and you lose press turns (Same goes for enemies)
>Everyone has their own seperate turns where they attack, instead of downright phases
>Bigger emphasis on using buffs/debuffs, but all you really need is Sukukaja & Sukunda, Dekaja, and Dekunda
Etrian Odyssey truthfully isn't any better, either. Devil Summoner was probably my favorite because of how the Loyalty System functioned.

To be fair, if Persona was just the dungeon crawling, it would be a shitty SMT ripoff, the balancing of the social aspects combined with the dungeon crawling makes a persona game fun to me.

Currently playing P4G at the moment, in Heaven and still having fun.

Crest magic is just materia and the protagonist is a better version of Vincent. The character mechanics/gimmicks each being unique in how there upgraded and improved on is also similar to some characters in FF7 and 9

The 8th day on the Overlord route can give you both Naoya and best girl Amane as party members while getting rid of Yuzu, it's objectively the best route. It even let's you bully Betatron

FF6 - broken shit. stats don't even work. game is unbalanced as fuck. Everyone can learn every spell. OP items handed out like candy.
FF7 - This one is pretty good but still dumbed down compared to all the SNES games with fewer party members and (on average) fewer enemies per encounter. Also really started the retarded minigames for brainlets fad.
FF8 - Like all the PSX games this one is full of interminable cutscenes.
FF9 - worst combat engine in the entire series by far. Slow as fuck and janky. Dumbest fucking minigame of all time.
FF10 - Because Final Fantasy wasn't dumbed down and easy enough all ready.

The fact that you don't like FF4 but are willing to put up shit like FF6 and FF9 just proves you are plebeian.

And once I've 'learned' those 'puzzles', what then? The game has literally zero replayablity, and that's what separates a game from a (((cinematic experience))).

Don't just breed with gods, in the game you can breed with gods or other player's clan members via visiting other clan homes or scanning the QR codes people upload online. It's important to quickly realize that each of these uses a different kind of currency. So to quickly build up a decent family gene pool use both devotion (currency for breeding with gods) and your regular money (for breeding with other clans) to their fullest.

Remember to mark down where you found scrolls you were unable to get while you were beating mobs, scrolls are your spell pool which every clan member shares. Of course if they don't meet the stat requirements then they won't be able to use them until they do.

Also dungeons have randomly generated layouts even if their general flow remains the same. Beating the main game isn't that hard but post game can be fucking minmax hell and in a way beating the post game pretty much kills your game because the endgame of post game is to transmigrate all the gods into human forms (which then die eventually and you permanently lose them).

Oh and one more thing, as you progress through the plot you unlock festivals and some of these have tournaments against other clans. Plan your yearly schedule around them because they're very useful for quickly leveling up members and getting some decent cash.

Those games are about playing a role and making a decisions and the freedom that comes with choice more than any stats mechanics they may have. Some of them hardly have any stats at all.

However, gamers cling to "levels" and "Experience" and think these are what make up RPGs, while playing a game that has little to no roleplaying involved. You go from making as many choices as you want, to playing and counting yourself lucky to be able to make three choices. It's a themepark ride attempt at emulating actual roleplaying games. But this is what you have known and loved since you were a child so of course you're not going to stop and be critical about what you grew up with.
