Because the FFVII ending was perfect and a continuation shits all over its open-endedness.
Also because as a movie it is pretty shitty. Show it to someone who knows nothing about FFVII and they will not follow what's going on AT ALL.

It was stupid, boring and pretentious and you don't know what the fuck is going on in any action sequence in the movie except for tifa's fight in the church. They actually managed to make something even worse than Spirits Within.

Needlessly fucked with Cloud's character, he had developed greatly over the course of the original Final Fantasy VII, Advent Children shits all over that by having Cloud experience the same self-doubts he already had gone through in the middle of the original game. It's ridiculous that Square Enix later tries to excuse Cloud's behavior to the Geostigma infecting him.
