They developed their own video game culture at roughly at the same time as America. Due to language barriers both cultures grew by themselves. Yes, many american games inspired jap games, and the reverse, but they were both mostly using their own cultures as inspiration. Everyone else was reacting to the innovations of the two.

Yeah, but they are so American in design that it’s pretty much impossible to point at any game and go “this is british”. Their cultures hitched to America and grew with it. Korea and China both did it to Japan and also grew with them. It’s not some “America/Japan stronk” it’s gaming and computing was growing in the peak economic growths of the countries.

It's nothing uniquely special. There're very few regions that regularly make video games, and America shares a lot of values with Western Europe so there's overlap. If we had African games, they'd probably be different too, but Africans eat dirt and don't know numbers so we don't have those.
Like Russia makes pretty distinct video games from the rest of the world too, but we just don't talk about them as much since it's CDProjektRed and some other dinky obscure studios. We'd probably have a category of Slavic RPGs if Eastern Europe just had more companies. It's nothing but the usual cultural division between medias.
