I'll be honest, in some cases it wasn't really a matter of luck. A few of your waits were terrible and beyond that, some of your hands make it obvious what you're waiting on. Take the 33789345EE hand with the Pon of the 9-sou. Ponning a terminal tile cuts the number of available yaku in half, and you're left with either an extremely unlikely hand like a Full Flush, or you're waiting on a value wind or dragon triplet. Which is exactly what you were doing. If I was in that game, and was playing defensively, I wouldn't throw out Sou tiles, terminals, or honors very lightly.

If you suspect that your opponents are defending well, I suggest employing more tricky strategies. One easy example is a tonky wait, where you build a hand with a valid yaku then wait on something like a non-value wind.

Luck plays a large role but if you get dealt a shit hand, not dealing into other players is fairly trivial as long as you're willing to throw your shit hand in the garbage to discard safe tiles. Obviously this is hard when you're facing down 3 other players in tenpai, and you can't defend against tsumos, but a big part of the skill of Mahjong is minimizing the impact of luck by using the given information to deductively or inductively infer what your opponent's hand is like. For instance, if they've only really discarded man and pin tiles, sou tiles are probably dangerous since their hand might be a Straight, a Half Flush, or a Full Flush.

This is why opening your hand tends to be a bad idea. Not only does it lock out more valuable yaku, but it also gives your opponents more information about your hand's composition, making it easier to defend against. Moreover, it makes your hand less defensive since you have fewer tiles to chose from when discarding.

Name a better way to play mahjong mahjong if you're an English speaking beginner.

Tenhou is overall a better client but it's also entirely in Japanese and as such, even if you can read the interface you'll be saddled entirely with Japanese people. Meaning peak playtime will likely be sometime in the early morning or middle of the night. At least with an English client the only barrier to entry is the game itself. My friends and I used to have to meet up in person to play mahjong. That shit got a lot harder when we all got jobs.

There are some obvious cases, like a player mostly dealing out 2 suits but not many tiles of the last suit is probably waiting on a tile in that last suit. There's also a few inference tricks you can do. For instance, let's say an opponent is in tenpai and just discarded a 4 Sou. They've put themselves in furiten for 4 Sous, and can't win off them, but it's also likely that they're not waiting on a 1 Sou or 7 Sou, since a 4 Sou would complete an open 2-3 Sou wait, as well as an open 5-6 Sou wait. It's not impossible, since they could be waiting on a pair of the 1 Sou or a 7-8-9 Sou meld, but it's less likely.

That's why folding isn't as good a tactic as you'd think. It only keeps you safe from 1 person, and it reduces your own chance of winning the round to 0. Pushing is often the better choice.

My internet connection is fine. With chrome I have zero problems.
When I say lag, I mean when clicking on a tile to discard, the tile disappears from my hand but doesn't get to the pile, during these occurrences if I click an emote it doesn't display, some time later, the tile appears on the pile, and the emote too. I don't lose seconds from the extra timer.
Again, if I use chrome none of this happens.

I feel like I'm at the point in mahjong where I am aware enough that my tile efficiency is good, and I know what is safe to discard, and yet I am constantly dealing into 1 side waits, and pairs. I've dropped 500 points in the last week. I feel like I hit riichi maybe once or twice in south rooms and that's even if I do try to play fast.
The tile efficiency website only has problem with stupid discards like discarding a wind over a numbered tile because there's one in the discard. It definitely doesn't help seeing the only other hands as those from the mahjong soul youtube channel

I just want to enjoy mahjong again. I've been playing for 6 years and Silver 1 is my best.

You say you know what's to safe to discard yet you're dealing in, means that you really don't know what's safe to discard or what to reasonably pick after all genbutsu. If you focus on defense only, or going betatori, you should be able to fend as many as two opponents in obvious tenpai, or one opponent in tenpai and one in probably tenpai. Defending against 3 even in all riichi is not very feasible unless you're some super computer. You can get to at least Silver 3 easy with defense. If you have luck too you can get past gold otherwise suffer with me in rigged tsumo hell.

There's nothing really wrong if you deal into an edge or middle wait. I dont think anyone would guess correctly 10 times in 10. But if you know the safe tiles to discard and you have a lot of dangerous tiles in your hand, you should fold rather than pushing forward. Worst case scenario you deal into other player with cheaper hand.
