Was it really that bad?

was it really that bad?

No it wasnt bad it was a tragedy.

Lack of analog controls ruined this game. Didn't mind the other changes.

It wasn't that bad. Playing SM64 on a handheld device blew my mind back then, and the minigames were kino.

It wasn't, it was actually much better than the original.

>Sacrifice analog control
Gain
>Ability to go anywhere with it
Seems like a good trade to me

It would be good if they remake for 3DS instead

It’s better than the original, people just have weak hands

It actually blows my mind that I played SM64 on a D-pad. It's my only experience playing the game and even now looking back the game is so clearly incompatible with it. Makes a fairly easy game harder because you're using crippled controls

>Zoomers never played mario 64 on poorly coded n64 emulators on their keyboards acting like this game is a travesty

>d-pad movement
>changed art style/direction
Yes.

>Thinks more polygons means different visual style
Full fucking retard

If they have done this in 3DS instead, and not implementing a run buttom with it, would have been one of the best Mario games ever made

it objectively is a different art style.

No, it was great, but I agree the controls were a bit fucked

this porn made me think mario 64 was the hardest game as a kid.
Camera and d-pad interact extremely poorly

What surprises me more is that we haven't had another remake of this game.
The DS version was released roughly 8 years after the original, but that was almost 15 years ago.

sorry about your soul dude

The right one is an objectively more uniform art style, and is therefore in my opinion a better art style.

Looks way better

I respect that it had more ambition than most hack-job "remakes", but the changes in controls and physics to the DS made it clunky at the best of times and actively unfun at the worst.

Unironically soul vs soulless.
Who thought removing all colour from a Mario game would be good?

I agree, the original is charming in its own way but it's a very amateurish 90s 3D look. Half of the enemies don't even look like they belong in the same game.

From that pic alone, the palette is washed up, Mario looks dull and homogenistic, and Koopa the Quick just looks like some deformed turtle.

And still there wasn't any need for a run button even on keyboard.

Shit taste

Only thing I don't like is the yellow green grass but otherwise the remake does look better.

>Mario looks dull and homogenistic
... so he looks like Mario?
>Koopa the Quick just looks like some deformed turtle.
... so he looks like a koopa?

Mario 64 was made for the N64 control stick and plays like shit without it

>finally my boy Wario is playable in a Mario game
>Mario fucking 64 no less
>make him a completely useless slow fatass
Yes, it's awful.

>The right one is an objectively more uniform art style, and is therefore in my opinion a better art style.
Attitudes like this are directly the cause of the lack of soul in modern games.

>play on 3DS
>suddenly analog controls

I think, taking in account how Nintendo always changes things around in strange ways, they might have decided to go with lighter background and environments so there's a bigger contrast between mario and the landscape and easier visible on a smaller screen with low resolution.

That might explain it. Or not. It's just a thought.

I just think of it as remix of Mario 64 rather than a remake, it's very obvious that multiplayer was going to be a bigger part of the game but it was the last time a Mario handheld game had some ambition behind it before getting infected with the NSMB virus, even if the original is decent it started the cancer.

That's not how it works my man

>You can play as Luigi, Yoshi and Wario
>Those minigames
It was very fun but visually could have looked much better. I guess at the time Nintendo was trying to make everything look like their official character models which didn't work out well.

This. Having 3D graphics on a handheld was mindblowing to me. I went back to my DS like every couple of hours just to wander around the castle for a few minutes. Then Mario Kart DS came and the ability to play online WIRELESS with anyone in the world. A lot of IPs were born here as well like Layton or TWEWY and others like Ace Attorney and Rhythm Paradise came to the west. And there were so many games that used the touchscreen in very creatives ways. It truly was a great handheld. I'd say it's the best one ever. I mean in terms of innovation. Of course 3DS is objectively better because it makes the DS obsolete, but this one just feels like a simple DS upgrade.

No, you can still only move four ways.

>... so he looks like Mario?
>... so he looks like a koopa?
In their nu-style which has always been shit compared to what came before.

>remake aged worse than the original
Probably

>It has Wario
10/10

Eight.

Why can’t I have a checklist of castle secret stars? I’m playing the mario64 on the original ds right now and it doesn’t look as bad as the comparison pic posted

Anyone have the comparison pic with the sea monster and the water world enemy?

at least they didn't make him le epic fart jokes warioware wario.

I'd have bought a 3DS version with Analog support.

I bet you didn't even punch the block things with wario in shifting sand land and pretend they were your beach house you fucking assbreather

I loved it as a kid. Literally had no issues with it.

>remeake of a game who used analog to enjoy the 3D experience
>It uses D-Pad

Even if we got galaxy this remeake would be perfect for the Wii

>no analog stick in a platformer
>objectively worse art style/graphics at an even smaller resolution
>split basic abilities across multiple characters
What's even to like? The minigames weren't noteworthy and the handful of extra stars aren't on par with the original ones.

Izquierda: 魂
Derecha: 魂なし

>>objectively worse art style/graphics
wrong

I don't why people expected a version of Mario 64 that starts with Yoshi chasing a rabbit to play the same as the original.

N64 Mario 64 is so fucking kino

I much prefer 64's aesthetic. The world is much brighter and feels more alive. DS looks kind of dull and a little boring. I really like the 64's take on the Mario world. They were trying to figure out what worked and were a lot more experimental with the Mario universe as a result. It also looks closer to Mario World.

>right
ftfy

everyone complaining mustve played this on a fuckin ds lite
it was fine on the OG ds

30+ stars 3 more characters and those minigames alone make it better than the 64 version

hell no this shit was great

It's okay on it's own. But compared to the original? It's terrible. Movement and physics aren't even close, the original wins by a landslide.

this is litterally the only area that looks significantly different.

Regardless of controls/art differences the simple act of putting all of Mario 64 with extra content on a fucking handheld in 2004 was mindblowing. Playing on a 3DS today fixes SOME of the control issue too, plus it gets bonus points for being the only mainline entry with Wario

the PSP launched the next year with fucking PS2 ports

But even with the D pad you can move more than four ways. Did you even play the game?

And pretty much all of them were worse.

better than sm64ds was, at least the psp had an analog nub

It was fucking great. Kids nowadays can't handle it because they are casual shits.

You could use the touch screen for analog controllers and it worked better than you'd think once you got used to it.
The DS wrist strap was designed to be be wrapped around your thumb to act like a analog stick.

It's not bad at all. What the fuck you on about?
