Vergil has no characterization in 3. Just some snarky banter but nothing to make him mean anything to Dante. There was really no reason Dante should have tried to save him either. Vergil was literally a figure head for what power does to someone. It corrupts them. Any art was injected headcanon.

Not him, but good fuck you couldn't be more wrong. They characterize him SO well you can get his entire reason to fight from just knowing "his mother was killed".
Dante tries to save him at the end because 1-he's his only remaining family member 2- he doesn't hate him in his heart of hearts 3- he can't understand why Vergil would want to stay in hell.
And it's not that power itself corrupted Vergil, because he doesn't even gain the power he's searching for in 3. It's that his feelings of weakness and inability to protect what he loves have hurt him so much that he's willing to sacrifice damn near everything else to not feel like that any more.
None of that is fan fiction. That's all very much in the game, and delivered by damn good writing.
