Hell, when SMM1 was originally teased it didn't even have an online sharing functionality for stages. They originally just intended for you to only make and play your own stages locally.

pretty sure that's not true, but I agree that this will almost certainly be patched as Splatoon had the same problem for several months until they eventually patched in private matches with friends, and later still the ability to join a friend in ranked battles.

my only guess is maybe they focused development on the ranking system and didn't consider people would actually want to play with friends until it was already late in development?
